Adherents.com is a growing collection of over 41,000 adherent statistics and religious geography citations -- references to published membership/adherent statistics and congregation statistics for over 4,200 religions, churches, denominations, religious bodies, faith groups, tribes, cultures, movements, ultimate concerns, etc. Basically, researchers can use this site to answer such questions as "How many Methodists live in Indiana?", "What are the major religions of India?", or "What percentage of the world is Hindu?" They present data from both primary research sources such as government census reports, statistical sampling surveys and organizational reporting, as well as citations from secondary literature which mention adherent statistics. MMDS/ITU bands might open new territory
for 3G
03/15/2003 09:44 AM

MMDS/ITU bands might open new territory for 3G: The 2.5 GHz band reserved for certain kinds of long-distance learning and instructional television originally, but which the FCC allowed the nonprofit and institutional geographical licensees to sublicense to commercial providers might find some new life. Worldcom and Sprint own the majority of these sublicensed frequencies, and it's a huge swath of good spectrum that's horribly underutilized. A variety of reports indicate that it's a bad idea to simply take this spectrum away. But there may be opportunities for it to be repurposed and then have other firms purchase the sublicenses. The FCC is also looking into the use of this band for wireless broadband, while 3G might also be a possibility.

Some of you (heck, most of you, I'd wager) may have heard this story before, but it does illustrate how far we've come. Back in the mid-1980s I was IT manager for an organization with a headquarters and 25 branch offices. When one of the branch office servers (each had a NetWare server, Versions 1.0 through 2.15) fell over, I jumped in my car and drove up to four hours to get it back on the straight and narrow. Upgrading a server in the branch meant camping out for a couple of days for NetWare installation, hardware setup, software and file restore. My, how things have changed.
