A small Macintosh software developer has renamed an application it had been calling iWork, lending credence to rumors that Apple plans to introduce office software of the same name.

IGG Software, which has marketed a time-billing application as iWork, has changed the program's name to iBiz. The change, which is reflected on the company's Web site, follows reports on rumor sites that Apple plans to offer its own suite of word processing and presentation software.

Enthusiast site ThinkSecret reported last week that a product from Apple called iWork would include an updated version of Apple's presentation software, Keynote, and a new word processing program, which the site says will be called Pages. The site predicted Apple would unveil the product at next week's Macworld Expo in San Francisco. Such a program would be an interesting move for Apple, which has for years kept its office software ambitions limited, counting instead on Microsoft to produce a Mac version of Microsoft Office.

Rumor site AppleInsider got hit with a lawsuit Wednesday, in the wake of two articles leaking information on what is to be release d in the Macworld Expo next week.

The suit, filed Tuesday in the Superior Court of Santa Clara County, Calif., aims to identify who is leaking the information and to get an injunction preventing further release of trade secrets. However, in filing the suit, Apple identifies specific articles that contain trade secrets, indicating that at least parts of those reports are on the mark.

Two ways to look at this, I guess; one, that the rumors reported on AI are dead on, and Apple is wanting to keep its secrets secret. Or two, (thanks to a Gadgetopia reader/poster) is that the rumors are not true, but Apple is trying to keep the rumors from raising the public's expectations for upcoming releases, which ends up hurting Apple's stock prices.

Me? I think that Apple has some hot stuff planned for the Expo, and the headless iMac is part of it. Why else would they announce a newer/faster/no-more-expensive Xserve the week before?

I sure wouldn't want to be the guy at Apple leaking this stuff. And maybe I'll think a little harder about posting the next Apple rumor I hear about.

Apple has apparently filed for a design trademark on a handheld computer resembling an iBook without the keyboard. From The Register:

The device is certainly a logical extension of what it's been doing with iTunes and AirPort Express. And while we're on the laptop tip, Averatec's new Tablet PC is coming out, the C3500 Convertible Notebook. It looks pretty hot for the price, too, with a decent speed AMD Athlon XP-M chip, 12.1-inch screen, and 802.11g for "as low as" $1,350 (although not sub-$1,000 quite yet). Except for the limitations convertible screens put on laptop form factors, there's no reason why all notebooks shouldn't be adding Tablet capabilities in the future for not much more money. Clearly, that's starting to happen. Plus, when you get angry at a Tablet PC you can punch the screen and watch it comically spin around until it breaks and you are fired. (Thanks, Kristian!)

Roland Piquepaille writes "Computer scientists from the University of Bath have written a software which transforms your ordinary photographs and movies into cubist works of art and animation reminiscent of Picasso. They trained their software to identify important elements of a face, such as a nose, eye or mouth, until the computer learned how to recognize them on its own. This was achieved by giving the software a kind of 'aesthetic sense.' Then, by "using photographs of a subject taken from multiple points of view, the software automatically picks out important areas within the image, which are cut out as chunks. The chunks are statistically shuffled and a few of them randomly selected and distorted into a 'cubist' composition ready for digital painting." The software is not yet publicly available, but software and animation companies have expressed interest. My blog contains additional references and images."
