The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) has taken new legal action against 896 alleged file traders using peer-to-peer (P-to-P) services, the organization announced Wednesday. Wednesday's total includes new lawsuits against 744 users of a variety of P-to-P services, including Kazaa, eDonkey and Grokster Ltd. The RIAA filed an additional 152 lawsuits against people already identified in the litigation process who declined RIAA offers to settle their cases, according to the RIAA. Those 152 people were previously sued by the RIAA as unnamed defendants. Not including the lawsuits announced Wednesday, the RIAA has taken legal action against about 1,500 alleged music uploaders since January.

RIAA Files More Lawsuits, Happily
Getting The Wrong Message Out
12/03/2003 04:58 PM
No surprise at all, but the RIAA has now launched their third set of lawsuits against those they accuse of copyright infringement for distributing works without the copyright owners permission via various file sharing services. The more interesting part of the article, though, is that the RIAA claims they're convincing people that downloading is illegal. They mention a recent study "showing 64 percent of Americans understand it is illegal to download music." That's nice... except for the fact that it isn't actually illegal to download music. It is most likely illegal to download certain pieces of music, but there's plenty of music out there that musicians want you to download and share. Of course, those musicians generally aren't supported by RIAA-member labels, so the RIAA couldn't care any less about them.

The Recording Industry Association of America ( RIAA ) filed more than five hundred lawsuits against filesharers for alleged copyright infringement.

Because a recent federal appeals court decision prevents subpoenas citing the Digital Millennium Copyright Act from being issued prior to the filing of lawsuits, defendants were identified only by their IP addresses pending subpoenas being issued to their ISPs.

This appears to be a successor to last year's subpoena campaign , which probably helped reduce aggregate file-trading in 2003 .

SCO lawsuits funded by Microsoft? 03/06/2004 01:59 AM

Wow: thi s one from Damien Barret:

"Color me not surprised. It appears that Microsoft is paying SCO to file all those ridiculous lawsuits against the users of Linux. I've seen low before, but this is pretty damn low. Scumsucking low."

I have no idea if any of that is true, but, it's truly sad that I could easily believe it's true... that's how much I trust the Microsoft corporate brand.

Microsoft targets 'phishing' with 117
new lawsuits
03/31/2005 03:24 PM
Microsoft Corp. says it is filing 117 lawsuits against unknown Internet site operators it charged were engaged in "phishing" schemes to obtain personal and financial information from unsuspecting consumers. The "John Doe" defendant lawsuits are to be filed in U.S. District Court in Washington state in an attempt to establish connections between worldwide phishers and discover the largest-volume operators. Officials are also warning consumers to be on the lookout for potential internet scams involving April Fool’s Day on Friday. Some scams are getting more and more sophisticated, some by including what looks like a legitimate Internet address link but once clicked on by the user, they are instead directed to a different, fraudulent site asking for personal information. Consumers are urged to be suspicious of unexpected e-mails seeking personal data, to not click on links in those e-mails, and verify contacts from institutions that claim a person is a victim of identity theft.
