One of the delights of Valparaiso is visiting La Sebastiana, one of the houses owned by Pablo Neruda.  In addition to his fondness for Communism, Stalinism, Stalin, Castro, and accumulating property (the guy owned a lot of prime real estate throughout Chile), Neruda asked that a rooftop heliport be incorporated into the design of his 1961 Valparaiso house.

p.s.  Happy New Year to all!  The fireworks display last night in Valpo/Vina was the largest that I have ever experienced and filled the harbor across a stretch of several miles with rockets from maybe 20 barges.  Chileans know how to throw a good party.

One of the airports where Alex and I stopped on our way back up the East Coast was Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.  Came in just after sunset to this peaceful country fair-weather airport, 3100' runway and no instrument approaches.  Came back the next morning to find the plane covered in grass and five enormous Blackhawk helicopters parked just behind it.  The helicopters were painted black and with almost no identifying markings.  Some friendly Army folks from Fort Belvoir out for a training/sightseeing excursion to the Gettysburg battlefield.  Here's a photo of my airplane back-taxiing down the runway with the Blackhawks behind, courtesy of Robert Shick, CW3.

Graffiti Archaeology is the study of graffiti-covered walls as they change over time. The grafarc.org project is a timelapse collage, made of photos of San Francisco graffiti taken by many different photographers from 1998 to the present.

Using the grafarc explorer, you can visit some of San Francisco's classic spots, see what they looked like in the past, and explore how they have changed over the years.
