The robot should go in first. Between 50 and 100 Packbot [13MB wmv] unmanned ground vehicles (UGV) are currently being used for battlefield reconnaissance. One proved its worth last week when it uncovered a bomb and was destroyed in the process. Colin Angle, CEO of Packbot maker iRobot, doesn't rule out the eventual weaponizing of UGVs and quips "we're not using these robots to hand out flowers".

Sleeping with the president is not a good idea. Bush had no answers to big questions, such as 'what happens on the morning after.' The Daily Telegraph reports that documents show Prime Minister Tony Blair signed up to the U.S. policy of regime change in March 2002, a year before the conflict started... after he was warned that postwar stability would be difficult and the U.S. had few answers. Oh, no problem. This week, Bush said he is 'pleased with the progress' in Iraq.'

Here’s an idea: what if when I wrote weblog entries about General Motors, I included a special tag, a keyword tag, that let everyone who wanted to read blog entries about General Motors read my weblog article, without otherwise having to subscribe to my blog? Makes sense. Now, should it be “gm” or “GM” or “generalmotors” or “general motors” or “General Motors” or “GM Corporation” or … ? Therein lies the fundamental problem with Technorati…

Unitarianism: good enough for two
presidents, not good enough for Texas
05/19/2004 02:47 AM
The state of Texas has denied Unitarians tax-exempt religious status because the church "does not have one system of belief." As Julia notes, Presidents John Adams and John Quincy Adams were sufficiently convinced of the Unitarians' religiosity that they actually were Unitarians.
Never before -- not in this state or any other -- has a government agency denied Unitarians tax-exempt status because of the group's religious philosophy, church officials say. Strayhorn's ruling clearly infringes upon religious liberties, said Dan Althoff, board president for the Denison congregation that was rejected for tax exemption by the comptroller's office.

GM in trouble: "If you erased the company name from the balance sheet and showed it to a forensic accountant, the recommended treatment would probably be to seek protection from creditors by filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. " GM's troubles are as much a result of the exploding costs of health care as they are due to the company's dropping market share. In Canada increasing health care costs (PDF with many charts) are taking a greater and greater share of government expenditures. In the US it's hurting big employers and regular people. But either way the problem doesn't seem likely to get better any time soon.

JavaScript Tooltip Library

JavaScript Tooltip Library 06/18/2004 09:35 AM

DOM Tooltip: Here's a great little JavaScript library to create custom tooltips for your Web page. A tooltip, in case you didn't know, is the little popup box that appears when you mouseover an element which has a TITLE attribute. Put your mouse on this link for a second (don't click, just hover).

It is now possible to create a wide variety of dynamic layers, such as embedded windows, context menus and hidden blocks. Additional features of the library include sticky tips, tooltip fading, lifetime, relative positioning, class assignments, width adjustments, mouse dragging, captions, directionality, offset adjustments, adjustable activate/deactivate delay times, snapping to grid, fate adjustment (hide or destroy) and references to created tips.

The link goes to a series of 11 pages that demo all the functionality of this library. I'm pretty amazed at how far you can push the concept of the tooltip — this guy has tooltips doing things that never occured to me.

Screenshot IDesk provides icons on an X11 desktop. Its features include transparency, configurable actions to run shell commands, PNG, SVG (in old versions), GIF image support, and XFT anti-aliased fonts. Other features include Imlib2 support (Imlib is deprecated), pseudo-transparency, the ability to only show captions on mouseover, tooltip on mouseover, startup notification, and more.
Changes:
The GNU configure and build system has been added. Now it is easy configure, build, and install this project. It is possible to define the font, size, and foreground and background colors for ToolTips. An old bug in the transparent effect when the user ran idesk and other s windows were open has been fixed.

Well, that certainly was quick. Yesterday we wrote about the tempo rary restraining order against SpamCop from reporting any spam from OptInRealBig to ISPs other than OptIn's own, and today that temporary restraining order was dissolved, as it appears the lawyers for IronPort/SpamCop made a compelling argument that OptInRealBig wasn't telling the full story. The judge admits that: "The legal issues are more complicated than they originally appeared." The hearing on the case has also been moved up a few days and will be held early next week.
