04/11/2005 10:47 AMA new survey by the Pew Internet and American Life Project suggests
that people may be getting used to dealing with spam in their inboxes
these days. Spam is also being cited as a cause for a marked decline
in the number of people who trust that what comes into their inbox is
genuine e-mail.

04/10/2005 05:37 PMAP - We're not any less annoyed by spam. We're just more accepting of
it. So says a study released Sunday by the Pew Internet and American
Life Project.

People Are Still Spam Suckers
03/23/2005 04:41 PMIf no one paid any attention to spam, it would go away. So, the fact
that we still get inundated every day suggests that enough people
continue to respond to spam. While not everyone is buying from spam,
a new report suggests too many people
still click on links within
spam, which usually have tracking tags, indicating that you're a
live sucker who actually pays attention to spam.
The People Who Respond To Spam
The People Who Respond To Spam
07/27/2004 02:51 PMIt's been pointed out over and over again that if no one ever bought
from spam, there wouldn't be much of a need for it. However, the
people keep buying and everyone else keeps suffering. Back in March,
we wrote about one of the first articles that ever tracked down
someone who would
admit
(happily) to buying from spam, but he obviously wasn't the only
one. Following a recent study suggesting that
an
awful lot of people buy from spam, USA Today has
managed to track down a few of the people who keep spammers
happy and keep the rest of us miserable. The list even includes a
"computer book author," Robert Reinhardt, who says "spam can be
useful," (if you're wondering, he appears to write books on Macromedia
Flash) and a "computer consultant," Michael Breindel, who says he not
only buys from spam, but uses it to promote his own business. From
the look of his website, of course, this "computer consultant" hasn't
yet figured out how to de-moronize his website for non-IE browsers,
since it's full of non-ASCII characters that make the site look, well,
almost like spam.

People Still Buying From Spam
06/29/2004 02:15 PMThere have been similar studies in the past, but the numbers on this
one are fairly disturbing. Despite the continued annoyance most
people claim concerning spam, a new study suggests that
20%
of Americans admit to buying products from spam. No wonder the
damn stuff keeps increasing. There are plenty of suckers out there.

Study: People getting inured to the

04/11/2005 03:26 PMThe Pew Internet and American Life Project turns up some surprising
data about people's attitudes toward junk e-mail.
People Know The Difference Between Spam
And A Legitimate Newsletter
People Know The Difference Between Spam
And A Legitimate Newsletter
02/17/2004 02:30 PMDespite the claims from some who say that email is dead for
newsletters, most people have adjusted and are
smart enough to recognize the difference between
an email newsletter they signed up for and spam. The real issue
is that newsletter recipients are a demanding bunch (as they should
be!), and have a very "what have you done for me lately?" attitude.
Thus, if a newsletter isn't serving their needs, they stop reading it.
For many people, simply designating a newsletter as spam and letting
the filter handle the rest is much easier than the unsubscribe process
that many newsletters require you to go through. The collateral
damage on this is that many spam filters that take user inputs in
deciding what's spam, end up declaring legitimate newsletters as spam
for other users, because some felt it lost its usefulness. In other
words, it's not that people are getting confused and think that
legitimate newsletters are spam. It's just that the newsletters
stopped being useful and the spam filter provided an easier
"unsubscribe" process.

Have People Lost A Fighting Spirit
Against Spam Or Is Pew Faking The Data
Again?
04/11/2005 05:58 AMAccording to the folks at Pew (who are suffering from a
credi
bility hit these days), people
are growing accustomed to spam. It still annoys people
to no end, but it's just become so common that people have given up
thinking about it or fighting against it, and just think of it as an
annoying fact of life, like traffic. Of course, it's not really clear
that the data actually says this. Basically, this conclusion appears
to be driven by two stats: (1) people trust email less but (2) they're
not reading less email -- sort of. The study actually says 22% of
people say they are spending less time on email because of spam, which
is down from 29% the year before. However, it's a bit of a stretch to
conclude from this one data point that people are resigned to spam.
It could mean that email simply has become more important in other
aspects. Or, it could mean that most of the people who were really
annoyed by spam decreased their email usage
last year instead
of this year. The problem with the data is that you can't really
compare the rate of change this year to last year, because (obviously)
they're starting from a different position. Most importantly, this
could just be an indication that spam filters have become more
effective. It wouldn't be surprising to find out that many people
have become resigned to spam -- but the data shown here doesn't
actually seem to prove that at all.

Google accepting video submissions
04/14/2005 10:40 AMGoogle has launched a program allowing users to upload personal video
clips to the Google Video service. On Monday, the company announced
its plans to put out a call for video clips as a way to experiment
with ways to expand the reach of its search service.
"In the next few days, we're actually going to start taking video
submissions from people, and we're not quite sure what we're going to
get, but we decided we'd try this experiment," Google co-founder Larry
Page said at a conference in San Francisco on Monday.
Google is accepting digital video files of any length and size.
Pending Google's approval process, the service will allow others to
search, preview, purchase and play uploaded videos. Google Video is
still in beta phase.

Porn Spam Is Washed Up
05/24/2004 05:37 PMThe latest study on spam trends appears to show that
financial spam is outpacing pharmaceutical spam
- though, honestly, so much of both is coming out that it's really
hard to imagine that this matters at all. Meanwhile, it seems that
porn spam is increasingly less interesting to spammers as the numbers
have been on a noticeable decline for quite some time. No matter
what, though, it appears that CAN-SPAM has done absolutely nothing to
slow down the amount of spam sent.

Futurismic bl0g starts accepting fiction
submissions
01/03/2004 04:52 AMFuturismic, a terrific group-blog run by sf writers, has decided to
begin publishing fiction online, paying a nominal-but-respectable
$100 per story. I love this idea, if for no other reason than it will
give a bunch of writers an opportunity to read "slush" (unsolicited
manuscripts), something that really helped me learn what mistakes new
writers make and how to avoid them. Some other stuff I like: in an era
when most magazines still insist on paper submissions, they're only
reading via the Web, and insisting on ASCII, pasted into a form, for
submissions. ASCII is the new PDF!
Stories should be compelling and well written, with a strong emphasis
on characters confronting or embracing imminent cultural, social,
technological, and scienctific changes. Post-cyberpunk, Information
Age, and near-future extrapolations will be welcomed--serious or
satirical, straight-forward or gonzo, optimistic or pessimistic. We
are not interested in fantasy, horror, or more conventional SF themes
such as space opera, time travel, first contact, or alternate
worlds.,,
Our reading period for the first half of our publishing year will
begin on January 3, 2004 and end on February 3, 2004. Any manuscripts
sent before or after these dates will be deleted unread. Because of
the short timeframe, you may send two stories during this reading
period, but please do so in separate submissions. We'll begin to
respond some time in mid-February, and hope to respond to all
submissions within three months of the reading period's closing. At
this time we're only planning to publish one story per month, so only
six stories will be accepted during each reading period. (The second
reading period of the year should occur in July 2004.)
