Easier Dynamic Win32 API
Easier Dynamic Win32 API
04/11/2005 05:42 AM
When Win32 API first came out, it wasn't sprawled out like it is
now. As it
expanded (exploded) in spurts across versions, architectures, and
service packs, Windows
developers had to deal increasingly with the headaches from the
need to take advantage
of latest features without crippling their software with older
Windows.
While one could now use deferred library loading creatively to
address this problem,
I've always handled it with manual LoadLibrary and GetProcAddress
calls. Well,
I finally got tired of doing this so I tried the handy LateLoad,
a small MFC-style event framework-like macros that creates a C++
class for each library
and a C++ method for each procedure. Very nice.
Here is the LateLoad definitions for a set of Win32 functions one
needs to enumerating

Unlocking Verizon V265 phones
Unlocking Verizon V265 phones
02/05/2005 10:00 PMBen Wilson: Now, here's the rub... (There is always a rub). Verizon
had
locked down these phones so damned tight! You couldn't get your photos
off of your phone unless you paid Verizon $0.25 to send them via email
from your phone. And if you wanted to transfer a background image to
your phone, you had to go the same route. You can't upload games or
ringtones or any of the things that you might expect a futurephone
such
as this would allow. Verizon has that locked down and would like to
sucker you at $0.25 a pop. Me, being the meddling user/client/customer
that I am did a little research ...

Wireless store). To recap, my reasons for switching are twofold: I
wanted to get onto Verizon for the superior coverage. I wanted a
Bluetooth phone. The V710 is Verizon's one and only Bluetooth phone.
So far, all I can say is that it's...

05/31/2004 02:00 PM"Number portability" began in November for parts of the country, but
on Monday it will be available throughout the nation. Millions of

Verizon Launches Strike Against Cell
Phone Spammers
08/04/2004 09:57 AM
Although I've been blessed
enough to have dodged the cellular spam bullet, I know not all of you
have been so lucky. And while it's far from an epidemic (yet), Verizon
Wireless is trying to nip it in the bud, filing federal lawsuits
against a group of alleged New Jersey cell phone spammers who sent
"152,000 unsolicited commercial electronic messages to thousands of
Verizon Wireless subscribers."
Until Verizon takes down their awful sign that mars the downtown
Manhattan skyline, they will remain my sworn enemy. I am glad, though,
to see someone try to take a chunk out of these assholes before it
becomes an even bigger deal. That being said, you can only do so much
with lawsuits; perhaps a technological solution is needed. Like the
one for email. Nevermind.

Post-circuit-switched voicemail
Post-circuit-switched voicemail
11/01/2003 12:57 PMNice rant on how "circuit-switched" thinking is holding back
advancement in telephony:
Assume a phone call requires an (extremely generous) 3Kb per second of
audio. One hour of stored audio is about 10Mb of data. This is a
pretty modest amount by the standards of modern flash memeory. Your
mobile phone is perfectly capable of storing all your voicemail. The
network is perfectly capable of transmitting the data in a sensible
amount of time. Unlike email, most voicemail is listened to -- the
amount of wasted download is small...
You should be able to listen to voicemails on your plane journey home.
You should be able to reply to them on a store-and-forward basis, even
when you're not connected to the network. And most of all, you
shouldn't have to use a clunky telephony user interface to navigate a
message queue. And you shouldn't be restricted to one device for
accessing your own data.

More Verizon/Motorola V710 Details
07/29/2004 11:30 AM
So we knew Motorola's new
V710 was going to be hitting Verizon Wireless sometime in August, but
internal documents reveal the exact date will be the 11th (and by
internal documents I mean a PDF on their site, so peruse away.)
Pricing looks about standard for a phone in this range: $420 at full
retail; as low as $320 subsidized with a two-year contract.
The most interesting information, though, are the three listed
Bluetooth Accessories, a headset ($80), a car kit ($200 ouch!),
and an external speaker ($100). While their function is pretty much
self-explanatory, what they don't address is that niggling rumor that
the V710 somehow uses a non-standard Bluetooth implementation (which
would mean other, less-expensive third-party peripherals wouldn't
work). I guess we'll have to wait until someone gets their hands on
one to confirm. (Thanks, Barry!)
