hpAjax isn’t a technology. It’s really several
technologies, each flourishing in its own right, coming together in
powerful new ways. Ajax incorporates: 1) standards-based presentation
using XHTML and CSS; 2) dynamic display and interaction using the
Document Object Model; 3) data interchange and manipulation using XML
and XSLT; 4) asynchronous data retrieval using XMLHttpRequest; and 5)
JavaScript binding everything together. This essay by Jesse Garrett
explains Ajax and what the future holds for this exciting application.

A Six Sigma Approach to Security
A Six Sigma Approach to Security
09/07/2004 03:01 AMHow sure are you that your security policy is effective. Let's say
that it is, so how effective is it? What costs are incurred by the
policy, and I don't mean just monetary. One way to answer these
questions and ensure the policy is not only effective, but also
efficient, is to apply the Six Sigma approach.
I'm meeting more and more IT folk who are Six Sigma trained, either
Black Belt or in training for the recognition. A Black Belt must be
able to explain the philosophies and principles of the quality
program, including how systems, tools, processes, and continuous
improvement can best be applied at multiple management levels and to
diverse business processes throughout the organization., (quality,
process/continuous improvement, etc.) and will be able to apply them
in various business processes throughout the organization. However,
quality is frequently mentioned in terms of product development and
manufacturing. I think that it must also be applied to digital
security.
Who is responsible for the security of digital assets? Each and
every employee who has contact with the data must understand that
she's responsible for the data's security, to the extent authorized by
her corporate authority. However, policies based on making everyone
responsible rarely succeed, be cause ultimately, no one accepts the
personal responsibility. By using a Six Sigma approach, the security
analyst starts at the other end, rather than the corporate user of
data, the analysis begins with the customer, ultimately the real end
user of corporate data. The Six Sigma process can evaluate security
holes, causes, and what long-term affects intermediate actions have by
evaluating the number of times customer service has been affected by
security failures.
Dave's Opinion
The Six Sigma approach to effectiveness and quality assurance is based
on ensuring no failures occur. Sigma is used to mean deviations from
the norm: defects from perfect quality. Six Sigma means that only 3.4
defects per million occur.
The Six Sigma approach is popular in many management applications,
not just information technology; however, I have rarely seen it
applied to security management. Maybe, it's time.

Alex Kolesnichenko has a proposal for RSS 1.0 and Atom that is

To fix the bug I mentioned in Spoofing
for Dummies, Microsoft announced that
it is removing support for following form of URL in IE:
http(s)://username:password@server/resource.ext
In the old days (old as in swords were still popular), barbers also
served as surgeons
which explains the design of the barber's pole (blue band for
barber service, red
band for surgery service). Well, micro-surgery wasn't
invented yet so a surgery
typically involved a lot of cutting and sawing.
While I respect the IE teams decision, the 'fix' surprised me and
reminded me of the
barbershop of old days. Maybe this is why barbers often ask
me if I am there
for just a haircut...

Marco over at PHP Arch is talking about a new approach to computer
book publishing, focusing on online books that cover detailed aspects
of PHP (think about a mini book just on GD). [_Go_]
Bias Note: Marco did ask me if I want to be an author in this series
but I haven't made any committments or even thought about if I'm
really interested. I do think that Marco has a good idea here and one
that is long overdue. I'm tired of books that try to cover everything
and leave out what I need. If I get a review copy when it comes out
then I'll review it here.
Readers, aggregators, linkbl0gs and
another approach
Readers, aggregators, linkbl0gs and
another approach
12/11/2003 10:55 AM
Some things are starting to fit into place. From the art
icle above, it's clear now that the difference between readers and
aggregators isn't new, it goes back to the difference between
My.Netscape and My.UserLand. In the former, each
feed was considered its own independent thing; My.UserLand flowed
all feeds into one flow. (My.UserLand migrated<
/a> to become the aggregator in Radio.) To me (and I've said this
before) the My.UserLand approach is more leveraged for the human,
because the former approach still makes you go somewhere to
find the new stuff. True, the "somewhere" is all in one app,
but it's still work you have to do, instead of the computer.
Then another dichotomy is exposed. Quite a few Movable Type
bloggers start things called linkblogs, or remaindered links, whatever
you call them, they're working around the model of longish posts with
lots of visual overhead (a model also implemented by Blogger, Manila
and Radio, so this isn't a dig on MT). What if you just want to link
to something, should that require a whole post with all its
attributes? It's a matter of user interface in the end. If MT made it
easy to post and update a news item that was link-blog-like, people
wouldn't need to invent a way around it. But that would break the
relationship between the feed and posts. Oy what a mess.
Now look at this page carefully. See how posts of all sizes
mix? It seems to work. The only thing missing is titles for posts
(you'll see why I need them, in some cases, later today). But a
right-click menu makes it possible to give a post a title.
