Reviving Acquired Startups Suffering
Inside Big Companies
05/17/2004 03:04 AM
There are so many stories of big companies buying startups for lots of money, and then realizing they don't really have a need for the startup. In a few cases, the company's former management team will buy back the startup, but it's a fairly difficult move. There is even the occasional story where startups selling out to larger companies have been able to write in buyback terms - but it doesn't happen very often. However, realizing that this situation happens more often than people like to admit, a new VC fund has been formed to help buy former startups out of the larger companies that acquired them. Basically, these VCs have found an undervalued market. The current owners want out, while the startups are already (somewhat) proven with a known product and known market - which just isn't getting the attention it deserves or needs. Should be interesting to see what comes out of these once again startups.

leica fotografie international

So many of the photography periodicals and magazines these days are all geared towards the digital photographer which, even as a digital photographer, I never buy since they seem to be filled with articles on topics that don't interest me and oodles of ads. The Academic Bookstore in Helsinki has an admirable assortment of various magazines, including B&W, a lofty art photography magazine and Leica World, a bi-annual journal that doesn't seem to have a lot of content.

I finally ran across Leica Fotografie International which focuses on Leica cameras and photography and isn't so highbrow since it has a number of articles for those of us who are enthusiasts if not world class artists. There is a lovely mix of practical articles interspersed with Leica photos you can appreciate and dream of taking yourself someday. LFI may be one of the last non-artsy film photography magazines left so, if you have a Leica or just like interesting photos in the street or photojournalism genre, you might consider subscribing.

New Magazine: Tekka

New Magazine: Tekka 12/18/2002 09:05 AM
New Magazine: Tekka I missed this on Sunday when Mark Bernstein posted it (although I definitely knew about it -- see below): At Eastgate, we're starting a new Web magazine, Tekka. Tekka will be about enjoying new media and creating beautiful software. Serious reading for serious readers. Ideas and tools. Tekka is going to be fun. We're going to create a market for good writing and solid thinking about the art of software and the craft of hypertext. Tekka will be edited by Anja Rau, the immensely-talented young hypertext critic whose skillful probes have inspired so much discussion this year. (Her weblog, Flickwerk, is fine reading) Tekka won't be for everybody. No kid stuff, no management fluff. Tekka will assume you know how to use your computer. If you just want to know what to buy at the mall, Tekka's not for you. If you need to create a new program, a new Web site, or a new company, Tekka assumes you can get it done. There's nothing more important happening right now than the great flowering of software that's about to unfold. You don't want to sit back and watch this. You want to be a part of it. (Odds are, if you're reading this, you are.) Charter subscriptions are $50. Someday, lots of people will say, "Oh, sure, I was part of Tekka from the start." Subscribe right away, and you can feel good when you say this. [_Go_] As long time readers know, I have tremendous respect for Mark. I've known him for 15 years now and he's always done great work, previously with StorySpace, currently with TinderBox (a very cool blogging product) and soon with Tekka. I'm looking forward to it. Very Obligatory Bias Disclaimer: Remember when I said that I "definitely knew about it"? Well I'm a contractor to Mark for implementing the security system for Tekka and some ancilliary PHP scripting. That's how I knew about it. So view my enthusiasm for Tekka knowing that. Still beyond contributing content ideas via IM to Mark I don't have an editorial relationship at all. And if I do write anything for Tekka, I'll definitely be clear about it.
