Sharp's Quick Release Screws

Sharp's Quick Release Screws 09/01/2004 03:37 PM

sharp_screw.gif imageYou're probably looking at that image on the right and thinking, "...uhh...." Well, I'd like everyone to know that I translated that image. Yes, I employed my superior Paint Shop Pro skills, took out the Japanese text, and replaced it with the English text that would fit in its place. And I did it without using any lens flares.

This image was in Japanese because it's coming from Sharp, who has for some reason decided they don't really like screwdrivers. As part of Sharp's international "screw screws" campaign, they've developed some "Easy Release Screws," which when heated to 100 degrees Celsius (212 degrees Fahrenheit for normal people), will have a special washer section expand, allowing for easy removal of the screw, (if you're a robot with super-heated hands, of course).

One of the primary applications of the screws will be appliances; recycling them requires dissasembly, which requires manual labor. With these new screws, machines could easily take apart a TV in a tenth (as Sharp estimates) of the time it takes a mere human.

06/21/2004 07:28 AM

Without getting too into speculation on 'why,' suffice it to say that you can consider any dreams about PCs utilizing the new Intel Grantsdale chipsets as a WiFi access point dashed, at least for now. Although that was one of the major selling points of the new standard -- PCI Express and DDR2 support are some others -- Intel has said delays have prevented them from shipping the integrated WiFi support for the chipset until Q4 of this year.

FCC screws America, adopts Broadcast
Flag, doom, gloom, armageddon
11/04/2003 07:12 PM
We've lost a round in the Broadcast Flag fight. The FCC today decided that it didn't need to listen to the tens of thousands of Americans that wrote to it, asking to have this terrible proposal set aside, and instead adopted a rule proposed by billionaire movie studios whose biggest problem is figuring out how to spend the riches they made off the VCR after we saved their asses by telling them to get bent when they tried to get the Betamax banned the last time around.
"The FCC today has taken a step that will shape the future of television," said EFF Senior Intellectual Property Attorney Fred von Lohmann. "Sadly, this represents a step in the wrong direction, a step that will undermine innovation, fair use, and competition."

"The broadcast flag rule forces manufacturers to remove useful recording features from television products you can buy today," said EFF Staff Technologist Seth Schoen. "The FCC has decided that the way to get Americans to adopt digital DTV is to make it cost more and do less."

PHP Blog: Desinging Search Engine
Friendly Pages in PHP

PHP Blog: Desinging Search Engine
Friendly Pages in PHP
05/17/2004 07:34 PM
PHP pages have a reputation of being more difficult (or at least different) to SEO than static HTML pages. Here’s an overview of the major issues encountered when trying to make PHP scripts rank well. While this focuses on PHP much of it is still relevant to dynamic pages in general A major goal in getting search engines to treat your PHP created pages well, is to make them look and act like static pages. If you have a large site you can use Apache to fake static looking URLs, or, with a smaller site, you can simply keep your GET variables to a useful minimum. In either case, however, never allow a spider to see links with different URL’s to the same content. If the URL is different, the page should be too.

From PHP Magazine: Search Engine Optimization Specialists believe that spiders do not read beyond the, ".php," on a URL. Therefore, dynamic pages that pass a variable will be overlooked. A new article on webpronews.com provides a few tips to ensure all your dynamic PHP pages are indexed. The author elaborates on how to identify a PHP file that needs to be converted to a static URL, and modify the way the server opens the index.php file, when a variable is attached, so the spiders can read them.

Blog and Forum automatic submission

Blog and Forum automatic submission
scripts
12/19/2004 03:34 PM

A note to the spammers and potential spammers that come across this: if comment spam is so effective in boosting search engine rankings, then why is this blog entry so much better ranked than the submission scripts are? You’d think that if they were even a little bit effective the makers of the tools would be able to get a better ranking than I have.

Spammers are buying ever-more sophisticated tools to facilitate their comment spamming. These tools can find comment scripts, bypass many protection measures, and submit comments with alarming speed.

Perhaps we could make a dent in the comment spam by attacking these tools. Find shareware and “webmaster script” sites where these tools are sold, distributed, and marketed and get them shut down. A search for “blog submission scripts” will turn up lots of links to products (and now, I’m sure, this blog entry) that are designed to spam comments. Track these down, contact the places they’re marketed, like share*it and for the software to be removed from their catalogs.

After finding a spam package that’s being sold on share*it, I contacted them about removing it. I’ve removed the names and links to the product, because I don’t want to make it any easier for spammers to find products like this.

One of the pieces of software sold on your site is designed to spam weblog comments and message boards. Product ID [removed] is described and marketed as a blog spamming tool at [removed] Please don’t continue to add to the spam problem, and remove this product from your service.

If bloggers are powerful enough to take down a TV news anchor, I’d imagine that a concerted effort to choke off distribution sources would be successful as well.

Thanks, Bloggies! BB wins best group
bl0g, and bl0g of the year!
03/14/2005 05:29 PM
Xeni Jardin: Boing Boing pal Scott Beale informs us that our blog just won Group Weblog of the Year at the Bloggies. OMG! What a huge honor! Thank you, Bloggies. We honestly didn't expect this, and we are deeply moved and grateful. There were many other deserving blogs up for awards, backed by talented folks who work very hard, and we raise our collective pirate-eye-patches in their honor: check 'em all out. On behalf of my blog-mates Cory Doctorow, Mark Frauenfelder, and David Pescovitz; our wise "band manager" John Battelle; our sysadmin par excellence Ken Snider; and the rest of the team and extended family that makes Boing Boing possible -- a humble thank you. But most of all, we are grateful to you, our readers, for wasting otherwise productive time on our collective scrapbook of "wonderful things," and for pointing us to even more of those wonderful and undiscovered things each day. We're really sorry that we couldn't make it to SXSW in person to accept the award, but we hope you'll join us in celebrating in person tomorrow at ETCON ( all five of us will be in the same place for the first time). Boing Boing sprouted online a little over five years ago, from paper zine roots planted by Mark Frauenfelder and Carla Sinclair. It is a privilege to blog for you. With you, we look forward to another adventurous year of link-discuss to come. Link

Update: Holy crap! Reader Nathaneal Heasley sez, "Not only did BB win best group ‘blog, it won “blog of the year/best weblog overall†– congratulations!" For those keeping track, this is the second year in a row Boing Boing has received these two awards: Link to 2004, Link to 2005. Man. We're speechless, and overwhelmed by your generosity.
