More Modern Anxiety Disorders -- This
Time It's Broadband
04/08/2005 06:26 PMFor some time, we've been hearing about disorders related to
information
overload in our modern world of instant communications. Those
early theories of Internet-related stress problems seem quaint by
today's standards, in which each technological advance brings with it
more angst. Two days ago it was
iTune
s playlist anxiety, today Om Malik discusses his experience with
In
ternet anxiety disorder, as he calls it. Besides the standard
offline media, wired/wireless phone calls and messages, he's also
inundated with IMs, hundreds of unanswered emails, and thousands of
unread newsreader posts. Everything's backlogged, and he can't keep
up. The culprit in his mind is broadband, which could bring on the
next big malaise of the century. Yes, we are swimming in a sea of
information, and it does have its downside. But technology doesn't
seem completely to blame here. Perhaps it's more of a reflection of
our culture and our need for immediate and constant communication,
gratification, stimulation, [fill in the blank]-tion. Stress comes
more from the use of the technology than its mere presence. In fact,
if technology had a hand creating the problem, maybe it can also help
fix it. Or maybe it's all just a vicious cycle. Tools such as
newsreaders are designed to save time by filtering information, but
instead they can generate more. So, next there will be a technology
designed to deal with that problem -- and it will create a different
issue, which will require another technology. What were we just saying

06/30/2004 04:40 AMAt a time when many Americans consider journalists no more trustworthy

critical eye on itself. Adam L. Penenberg's column, debuting here
today, takes a step in that direction.

PVR anxiety: the tyranny of the to-do
list
PVR anxiety: the tyranny of the to-do
list
11/12/2003 01:29 PMI ditched my TV and my cable and my beloved TiVo a couple months back
(saving money, saving time), and one of the first things I noticed is
that I lost a huge amount of unconscious anxiety that I'd been lugging
around: every time I turned on my television, I'd be confronted with a
"to-do" list from my TiVo, all the shows it had captured that I hadn't
watched yet.
When I first got my TiVo, having a lot of programming on the drive
felt like someone had done me a large favor; but over time, it felt
almost like a nag: here's all this "work" I've got piled up for you to
do.
Of course, this isn't specific to TiVo -- any PVR has this effect, as
does an RSS reader, mail reader and so on: the
unread/unwatched/undealt-with flags that define my life multiply, and
my personal time does not.
I'm not the only one: Sign on San Diego has a piece on other PVRs
owner who're drowning.
"For something that is supposed to be relaxing and unwinding at the
end of the day, you (think) 'Wow! I have a lot of shows to watch,'"
said Scott Bedard, technology director at an online media company in
San Francisco...
"I get to the point now where I skip going to the gym so I can keep up
with watching "Dawson's Creek" reruns," which are broadcast for two
hours each day, he said. "I look forward to when they end so I won't
be stressed."

Dealing With Playlist Anxiety
Dealing With Playlist Anxiety
04/06/2005 09:36 PMIt's been a few years since the concept of
playl
ist anxiety was first discussed. With the ease of sharing
playlists via iTunes or other music software, it appears that some
listeners freak out over what others might think of their
music-listening tastes, and some even change what they listen to in
such environments to protect how others might view them. Apparently,
that concept is interesting enough that some
researchers are
doing a study of how playlist anxiety impacts people in an office
environment. The study is pretty simple, so far, and only looked
at a very small group of people, but it is an interesting subject. It
appears that at least some people do change their listening habits out
of fear of what others might think, and it seems likely that some have
crafted different "public" and "private" playlists to protect their
own egos from being slammed for listening to too much Britney Spears.
The research also found that people generally aren't that interested
in browsing through other's playlists, but will take a recommendation
from someone and go searching to hear that particular artist or song.
It seems that random browsing is too hit or miss to be worthwhile.
Either way, the various download music stores might find such data
useful in figuring out what kinds of things to promote. It also
raises interesting questions about the whole issue of "the long tail."
Will people shy away from certain niche artists for fear of being
considered outside of the norm? Or is that canceled out by listening
to niche artists to prove that you're independent and cool when it
comes to music?
E-Mail Stress Disorder or Burnout?
E-Mail Stress Disorder or Burnout?
05/12/2004 06:48 PMI think I have some sort of strange e-mail related disorder. Ever
since I stared reducing the volume of my daily mail feed I've become
even more sensitive to how much damned e-mail I get. It's weird.
E-mail seems like such a burden anymore. I have maybe 20 messages I've
been needing to reply to (down from hundreds) and it just seems like
such a chore. After I get home from work (where I still process a fair
amount of...
