Upgrade to gcc 3.3 and/or 10.3

Upgrade to gcc 3.3 and/or 10.3 10/28/2003 11:07 PM
It is now possible to upgrade Fink to take full advantage of the gcc 3.3 compiler, or to use OS X 10.3 if you have that installed. Binary packages corresponding to these upgrades are not yet available, so if you make extensive use of binary packages you may wish to wait a few days before upgrading. If you wish to perform this upgrade, and you had previously installed the June 2003 Developer Tools update from Apple, you will need to install the August 2003 Developer Tools update BEFORE you upgrade Fink. Under 10.3, be sure to install XCode from the XCode disk before upgrading Fink. Running "fink selfupdate" should perform the upgrade for you. The latest version of the fink package manager will automatically detect which version of OS X and which version of gcc you have installed, and will adjust itself accordingly. If you wish to do a fresh install of Fink on a 10.3 system, we recommend bootstrapping from source, starting from fink-full-0.6.0.tar.gz available on fink's sourceforge download page. You'll need XCode for this as well. Also note that once you have Fink version 0.15.0 or higher, you do not need to install system-xfree86 anymore. Fink is capable of automatically determining your system-xfree86 version if you don't already have any fink x11 packages installed. If you currently have an old system-xfree86 package of any kind installed, please run the following: sudo dpkg -r --force-all system-xfree86 system-xfree86-42 \ system-xfree86-43; fink selfupdate; fink index The Fink team is still working on getting Fink packages working under 10.3, but many many packages already work.

More Reasons Not To Upgrade

More Reasons Not To Upgrade 08/12/2004 10:26 PM
One common wisdom in the Macintosh land is to never install updates from Apple immediately. Wait a while, and let all the other beta testers upgrade and report their successs or failture before you do so. Who knows, maybe Apple will even pull the update so that they can work on it somemore before you update?
But now, there is another reason why you shouldn't update so quickly: find out if the latest and greatest Apple patch will disable your beloved hack -- whether it is to play Windows Media files through your AirPort Express, or copy your RealNetwork files to your iPod.
Sometimes, the computer industry can make one sad.

MT 3.1 Upgrade Report

MT 3.1 Upgrade Report 08/31/2004 10:28 PM

Well, I went ahead and upgraded to Movable Type 3.1 with the free version I got from joining the MT Professionals Network (still trying to find a catch...).

Note that if you're considering a 3.1 upgrade, wait — there are errors in the upgrade scripts that Six Apart is working to fix right now. I had to make one code change and forge ahead while ignoring another error in order to get the upgrade to work. It doesn't help that I've hacked this install up pretty badly.

I haven't really tested any new functionality yet. It doesn't seem any faster, which is disappointing, but the new interface is much, much cleaner and the stylesheet has been made more...hackable. Selectors are grouped by template so you can pretty easily find the rule you want to change (TEXTAREA font is pretty large by default...).

One great improvement: the little bold, italic, underline, and link buttons in the editing interface work in non-IE browsers...finally! That alone is worth the upgrade.

The venerable bookmarklet feature has been changed to "Quickpost" (probably avoid conflicting with the JavaScript hacks that people call "bookmarklets"), but it appears to be screwed at the moment — formatting is all off and the TEXTAREA is about 10-pixels wide.

So, while this upgrade looks promising, hang loose for a week or so before rushing in. There are some speedbumps to work out yet. I'll post about the new functionality as I play with it.

More on the Typekey upgrade...

More on the Typekey upgrade... 05/16/2004 12:18 PM

So my installation of Movable Type has never been the simplest of things. I've had to use cgiwrap to avoid some of the more arcane problems with pair's process throttling and I've got MT installed in a completely different directory and domain to my site. For someone with as little overt server knowledge as myself, this means that every time something's supposed to be a simple installation or adaptation process, everything goes completely wrong. This is all by way of me saying that I've still got lots of problems around the place with integrating the Typekey registration system, including but not limited to it randomly not working, having lots of really nasty preview screens that remain totally untemplated and generally feeling more than a little rough around the edges. I'll endeavour to get it all sorted out this evening so that the Monday morning crowd don't start snarking out at me... Plus: Lots of actually interesting posts on real subjects to come soon!

If you are using Firefox (or Mozilla), you should definitely upgrade to version 0.9.3 now because there are three critical bugs as well as the libpng bug in previous versions.  Increasing popularity of Firefox means more vulnerabilities like this will surface.

An upgrade to the RSS parser

An upgrade to the RSS parser 11/18/2002 12:58 PM
A while back I read on Dive Into Mark a rant about the sheer volume of traffic people hitting off of his RSS feed were causing. At the time I was developing my RSS reader that is in use now at this site. It's completely written by me, and I'm happy with it. It extracts all of the descriptions, links, and titles out of RSS feeds in any version (atleast I haven't experienced otherwise in my browsing) and returns them in an associative array. Also, it caches the RSS files in serialized format so that it doesn't have to repeatedly hit the servers the RSS files reside on, and subsequent requests do not require reparsing. Instead, it only requests the file if the cached file was written more than an hour and a half ago. But, my RSS parser still did not meet the need described in the above linked Dive into Mark article. Basically, Mark (and others) only want their RSS feeds being requested if they have been modified recently. "Recently" is defined by Mark as 3 hours, which is reasonable. I didn't know how to do this with my RSS parser, so I did some research. I found some information on various sites about doing conditional GET statements with PHP, and now my parser will only fetch the file off the remote server if it has been modified within the last three hours. I am now using this new version of my parser. The parser is not perfect, but I really like it. To view the source of it, click here. An article will follow soon.

Mocking Woody Guthrie's Memory

Mocking Woody Guthrie's Memory 07/27/2004 09:17 PM
The late, great Woody Guthrie is surely spinning in his grave today, in fury over what is happening with one of his most memorable songs, "This Land is Your Land." But Guthrie would not be even slightly unhappy at the use of his immortal tune by the JibJab folks, whose brilliant satire of George Bush and John Kerry has become one of the most popular animations ever to hit the Web or any other medium. No, Guthrie would be thrilled. He was a folk singer. Like all other folk singers he borrowed from others to create his art. As his son, Arlo, onc e said:
"We've heard some of the people talk about some of the songs he wrote tonight. And the truth is, he did steal old songs from other places. He took the old gospel songs, he took the old traditional ballads, and he put his words to them like we heard tonight. People still called it stealing. Plagarism, bad words like that, 'til Pete Seeger come along and renamed it the folk process. I think my dad's theory was that if you wanted people to be singing along with you on your new song, it'd be a hell of a start if they already knew the tune. Or even some of words."
Woody Guthrie wrote scathingly of people who steal more with fountain pens than guns. He would have loathed the people who abuse copyright so much today, trying to restrict all kinds of fair use, of which parody is an absolutely protected example. Guthrie wanted credit for what he wrote, but he had contempt for severe legal restrictions on what others might do with it. According to Pete Seeger, in this account (widely acknowledged in the folk world to be true) from the Museum of Musical Instruments, when Guthrie was singing on the radio in Los Angeles during the Depression, he'd mail mimeographed songs to listeners, and wrote on one:
"“This song is Copyrighted in U.S., under Seal of Copyright # 154085, for a period of 28 years, and anybody caught singin’ it without our permission, will be mighty good friends of ourn, cause we don’t give a dern. Publish it. Write it. Sing it. Swing to it. Yodel it. We wrote it, that’s all we wanted to do.”
I'll bet, therefore, that Woody would be horrified -- and angered -- by the behavior of an outfit called The Richmond Organization, which controls the copyright to his music. This humor-impaired crew has gone ballistic and has lau nched legal threats (CNN) at JibJab. The Richmond Organization is dishonoring Woody Guthrie's memory, not that it seems to care. But it's giving us one more example of how the copyright system has abandoned common sense.

Woody Woodpecker laugh-guy is dead 04/24/2004 03:19 AM
Harry Babbit, the voice of Woody Woodpecker's laugh, is dead.
Dubbed "Handsome Harry" by Kyser, Babbitt sang on several hits, including "Three Little Fishies,""On A Slow Boat to China,""(Lights Out) 'Til Reveille,""He Wears a Pair of Silver Wings,""Jingle, Jangle, Jingle" and "The Umbrella Man."

Babbitt's high voice was later used on a solo recording of "All I Want for Christmas Is My Two Front Teeth," for which he included a lisp. He was even responsible for the laugh on "Woody Woodpecker," Kyser's 1948 hit novelty tune.

Joel Blain recently wrote in with an interesting observation:

"I've been reading a bio on Woody Guthrie. It's pretty interesting. The book reprints one of the "Copyright Warnings" he included on his recordings in the ealry 40's

"This song is Copyrighted in U.S., under Seal of Copyright # 154085, for a period of 28 years, and anybody caught singin it without our permission, will be mighty good friends of ourn, cause we don't give a dern. Publish it. Write it. Sing it. Swing to it. Yodel it. We wrote it, that's all we wanted to do."

It just made me think of Creative Commons. I dunno if you've seen or heard it before, but I thought I'd pass it along."

Nice find, thanks Joel!

JibJab Threatened Over Use Of Woody

JibJab Threatened Over Use Of Woody
Guthrie Song
07/26/2004 09:08 PM
For the last few weeks, the JibJab site and their amusing political parody of Woody Guthrie's "This Land Is Your Land" has been getting passed around the net. It's well done, and deserves much of the praise it's been getting. However, it appears the folks who own the rights to Woody Guthrie's music are anything but pleased, and are demanding that JibJab stop distributing the flash movie. Their biggest complaint seems to be that "This puts a completely different spin on the song," which will "damage" the song. Anyone who can't see how utterly ridiculous this is has no job watching over Woody Guthrie's music. Guthrie, after all, is the same singer who once put the following co pyright notice on his work: "This song is Copyrighted in U.S., under Seal of Copyright # 154085, for a period of 28 years, and anybody caught singin it without our permission, will be mighty good friends of ourn, cause we don't give a dern. Publish it. Write it. Sing it. Swing to it. Yodel it. We wrote it, that's all we wanted to do." Apparently, no one told the folks at the humorless Richmond Organization.

Woody Guthrie's copyright used to defile
his memory in lawsuit threat
07/27/2004 05:51 AM
Two brothers who cooked up a funny parody of Bush and Kerry singing "This Land is Your Land" have been threatened with a copyright infringement lawsuit by the current rightsholder to the classic Woody Guthrie song, a company called Ludlow Music. A lot of the copyright rhetoric centers on copyright's ability to give creators controls over their works, but here it is working just the opposite, for Woody Guthrie's standard copyright notice went like so:
"This song is Copyrighted in U.S., under Seal of Copyright # 154085, for a period of 28 years, and anybody caught singin it without our permission, will be mighty good friends of ourn, cause we don't give a dern. SuccessFactors today announced via a news release over US BusinessWire that the company successfully completed a software implementation at MasterCard International in a record-setting, two weeks time. In addition, SuccessFactors also provided MasterCard's 4000 worldwide employees with a seamless shift to our software while simultaneously reducing performance review-related help desk calls by approximately 25%. - Prior to SuccessFactors, MasterCard was using a workforce performance management technology that was severely limited in functionality. Specifically, there was limited reporting functionality, minimal visibility into each employees' performance history and multiple forms used across their worldwide organization that were unable to be tracked within one system.SuccessFactors was selected to unify the multiple HRMS systems in use at MasterCard, streamline the peformance management process and begin shifting HR's role away from a transactional agent to a more strategic partner driving business at the executive level. The decision to implement SuccessFactors technology was weighted heavily on the company's ASP business model, expansive reporting tools and ability to function as a business partner.
