Auto overflow

Auto overflow

Auto overflow 12/02/2003 01:55 AM

I discovered a css property I was previously unaware of: overflow .  This enables me to address a pesky little problem whereby the center column encroaches on the rightmost column when the data is too wide.  If your browser supports this css property, try shrinking the width of the brower window when viewing these entries.

Glenn Fleischman writes: The CUWiN [Champaign-Urbana Community Wireless Network ] project wants to allow self-forming, noncentralized, mesh-based Wi-Fi networks using standard, old PCs with no configuration. Slightly more advanced units could be ruggedized boxes using Compact Flash, but the basic unit would be a 486 or later PC with a bootable CD-ROM or bootable floppy that bootstraps a CD-ROM. Once booted, a unit finds other similar units without any other configuration or control and forms a mesh. Atom, RSS, auto-discovery

Atom, RSS, auto-discovery 01/16/2004 11:01 AM
Which, Atom or RSS, should NetNewsWire prefer when doing feed auto-discovery?

Assume that there will be a preference to let you choose which you prefer. The question is: which should be the default?

Also assume that I don’t want to put up a sheet prompting the user to choose whenever NetNewsWire finds both. That’s a bit of complexity the newsreader should take care of.

So, the question is, which? I can see good reasons for each. What do you think?

Hybird Auto Accidents

Hybird Auto Accidents 05/04/2004 03:13 PM

Rescuers prep for hybrid car accidents: Some interesting questions here. Are electric motors more dangerous that internal combustion engines in the event of an accident? What happens if someone drives one into a lake? Will anyone attempting to rescue the occupants get shocked?

Hybrids draw power from two sources, typically a gas or diesel engine combined with an electric motor. The battery powering the electric motor carries as much as 500 volts, more than 40 times the strength of a standard battery.

That worries those who must cut into cars to rescue people inside. "If you can't shut it down, you don't know where the high voltage is," said David Dalrymple, an emergency medical technician...

The single greatest question troubling mankind at this time is "What movie should I rent ?". We are here to answer that question! What to Rent is a website linked to a computer-cluster that will recommend a movie for you to watch based upon your personality and the type of film experience you are looking for.

It doesn't require any personal information to create a profile, not even an email address. And no new password to remember. Refreshing.

Auto-Detecting Driver Installers

Auto-Detecting Driver Installers 09/06/2004 11:15 PM

Here's a trend I'm seeing in driver downloads from hardware manufacturers: they're bundling drivers into one file that detects your hardware and installs the right driver. (Mind you, while I'm just noticing this trend, it's probably been around for years...I'm not all that perceptive...)

I got a new machine this week, and it came with a 128MB NVidia GeForce Ti video card (insert sounds of Tim Allen going "Argh-h-h" here...). To get the driver for it, NVidia just has you pick your product line ("GeForce," for instance) and you get a 61MB download with, I guess, every driver for that line. It's an executable that figures out what card you have, and installs it. You can then toss the installer.

The machine came with a Sound Blaster Audigy card as well. Same deal here, with a twist. The download was a little executable that detected the card, then downloaded the correct driver from Creative's site and installed it.

You're sacrificing download size for the sake of not having to figure out what hardware you have. The app saves you the trouble, but you end up downloading 10- or 20-times what you need.

I personally love it, but, then again, I have broadband.

Web Development Bookmarklets: Thanks for Si mon Willison for pointing us at this amazing page of bookmarklets that let you play with the CSS and JavaScript of any page.

These bookmarklets let you see how a web page is coded without digging through the source, debug problems in web pages quickly, and experiment with CSS or JS without editing the actual page.

Some killer bookmarklets:

  • Computed styles. As near as I can tell, this one lets you click on an element and displays the styles applied to it both directly and inherited from higher up the cascade.

  • Generate source. Displays the entire DOM tree as formatted text.

  • View variables. Displays all JavaScript variables and functions in scope on the page.

  • Shell. Gives you a JavaScript shell in the current page scope.

Great, great tools here. Incidentally, these are only the "Web Development" bookmarklets. There are hundreds of bookmarklets on the site. Some of them are jaw-droppingly good, and worthy of their own post.

If you don't know how a bookmarklet works, just pick one you like, then drag it to the bookmark bar on your browser. Find a page where you want to use it, and click the bookmark.

Anyone Want a Feedster Bookmarklet ?

Anyone Want a Feedster Bookmarklet ?

I was thinking it would be really useful to just highlight some text on a webpage and click a bookmarklet in your browser link bar and have it do a feedster search.  Matt Mower gets all the credit for this idea.  And, well of course, Bottom Feeder who already has this working.

Anyway ... I just update to IE 6 which seems to have disabled bookmarklets.  I can drag it to the links bar andeven though I say Yes its ok to add it, it seems to just disappear into the void.  Anyone know anything?

So I have most of the code for this but I can't test the pesky thing.  Arrggh!

worldcat bookmarklet - get it

"Thanks to Steven Cohen and Michael Fagan and Andrea Mercado [and me, and Michael and Andrew whose emails with similar code I didn't get til this morning], the WorldCat Lucky Bookmark lives! While I agree with Sarah that we can't expect our patrons to grok the bookmarklet thing, as much as we might like them to, this one is [nominally] for staff. Go nuts team!

Lucky 'Cat [in same window]
Lu cky 'Cat [in new window] " [librarian.net]

And as always, Jon Udell provides more help:

"I could have switched LibraryLookup over to this technique, but never did because it only works with Amazon. I've always liked the idea that LibraryLookup can also work with isbn.nu and All Consuming and other book sites. (It'd be cool if they all emulated Amazon's metadata pattern, but they don't.) Still, in the context of this excellent new WorldCat hack, I thought the non-ISBN-dependent solution might be useful. So here it is:

Amazon/Google/WorldCat bookmarklet: A/G/W (drag to linkbar) "

Most excellent - nice work, everyone! Another ringing endorsement for open, web services-based back-ends for library catalogs.
