Greg Sandoval, AP Technology Writer, writes: “Tracking sexual predators in Florida. Guiding travelers to the cheapest gas nationwide. Pinpointing $1,500 studio apartments for rent in Manhattan. Geeks, tinkerers and innovators are crashing the Google party, having discovered how to tinker with the search engine’s mapping service to graphically illustrate vital information that might otherwise be ignored, overlooked or not perceived as clearly. “It’s such a beautiful way to look at what could be a dense… Direct and Related Links for 'Google Maps Tinkerers Make Demographic Data Come Alive'

Google Maps

Google Maps 03/14/2005 05:53 PM
Google Maps Features include (according to Google): Easy navigation-- Users can drag the map to view the adjacent parts of a map. Search results from Google Local-- To find a wifi hot spot in a local area, users may type [wifi hot spot] and their local zip code to see wifi locations on the map. They will see phone numbers for each location appearing on the right side of the page. When users click on locations on the map, they will also find address information. Single search box-- Users can type search terms into a single search box under the Maps tab for local search results and driving directions. For example, typing [great sushi in New York] will display great sushi restaurants located in New York. Typing [Manhattan to Brooklyn] shows directions from Manhattan to Brooklyn. Turn-by-turn directions-- Users may type in an address and Google Maps plots a route, displaying it visually on the map itself, together with step-by-step directions for getting there (or back from there). When users click on one of these steps, they will see a magnified view of the area mentioned in the directions. Keyboard shortcuts-- Users can use the arrow keys to pan left, right, up and down; pan wider with page up, page down, home and end keys; and zoom in and out with the (+) and (-) keys....

Google Maps and XSL

Google Maps and XSL 03/14/2005 05:27 PM

I'll probably write more on this later, but it seems that Google Maps is using XSL. I spotted it loading the following pages while sniffing its activity with LiveHTTPHeaders:

This is in addition to the (now expected) XMLHttpRequest stuff. There even appears to be some of Microsoft's weird VML, although as I'm on a Mac I don't have access to IE/Windows to see what it's doing with it.

The bulk of the Google Maps JavaScript appears to be hidden away in maps.1.js, which becomes a lot more readable if you feed it through PrettyPrinter.de

As for Google Maps itself, it's an amazing piece of work but it's a shame they didn't follow map.search.ch's lead in degrading gracefully to a static version for unsupported browsers.

If anyone has any further insights in to how it all works, please post them in a comment.

My childhood, seen by Google Maps

My childhood, seen by Google Maps 04/06/2005 09:00 PM

(My childhood, seen by Google Maps, originally uploaded by mathowie)

Something I never anticipated in a million years was finding out that my good friend Kathryn Yu recognized names and places in this shot, then over IM we realized we attended the exact same elementary school (she, 8 years after me, and it's just off to the right edge of the screenshot). Turns out that she grew up less than a mile away from my house, and though I've known Kathryn for 3 years, it never came up until today. Unbelievable.

Google Maps Updated

Google Maps Updated 06/24/2005 07:22 PM

According to Google Sightseeing, Google Maps has made some significant improvements.

Today Google quietly updated its map service to add high-resolution aerial photography for much more of the globe than the previous limited coverage of North America. New additions include Scotland, Iceland, Kuwait and many, many more.

Cool! Now even more sights to see from a really-high bird's eye view! If only I could quit my job and become a full-time Google Maps tourist.

Google Maps has now added an option to display your map with sattelite data.

If you ever wondered what Gadgetopia World Headquarters looks like from space, now's your chance. Of course, the defenses are masked from sattelites, and most of the facility is subterreanean, but you get the idea.

Google Satellite Maps

Google Satellite Maps 04/05/2005 01:09 AM

Google's n ew satellite view on their maps is kinda freaky (I can see my car in the driveway), but it's fun to revisit my past.

I grew up across the street from the small city lake seen here, which used to be in the middle of a bunch of orange groves and then a golf course, all of which are long gone and replaced by houses. My high school. After college, I lived near this restaurant, which has the best thai food in LA. I lived here when I first moved to San Francisco.

Google Maps and user experience

Google Maps and user experience 04/06/2005 12:06 PM

Earlier this week, Google integrated their recently acquired Keyhole technology into Google Maps, allowing the user to toggle between the abstract map view and a satellite view. The addition was pre tty big news, and I was pretty excited when I saw this feature, as were many others. Matt Haughey even did a Maps/Flickr mashup in creating a memory map of his childhood stomping grounds; others followed suit.

The ability to view satellite images online has been around for years in the form of Microsoft's Terraserver (and also on a mapping site that I can't locate right now...I swear Mapquest let you switch back and forth between the two views, but I can't find it), so this really isn't anything new. Terraserver lets you zoom in/out, move around the map, and view other versions of the map (they have a topological version), and I know that many of the people who are so excited about Google Maps are familar with it. So why is everyone so excited about it?

Part of it is Google's involvement...they draw a crowd of attention anytime they do anything these days. But it also has a lot to do with someone I wrote about a couple of years ago: it's the user experience, stupid:

Robert Morris from IBM argued last year at Etech 2002 that -- and I'm paraphrasing from memory here -- most significant advances in software are actually advances in user experience, not in technology. Mosaic was not an advancement in technology over TBL's original browser. Blogger is a highly-specialized FTP client. IM is IRC++ (or IRC for Dummies, depending on your POV). The advantages that these applications offered people were user experience-oriented, not technology-oriented.

The satellite feature on Google is no exception. They took something that's been around for years, made it way easier to use (reposition & zoom maps without reloading, pinpoint addresses and routes onto the satellite imagery, toggle between sat and road maps, map size automatically scales to the browser window, etc.), and suddenly this old thing is much more useful and fun to play around with. Ajax is the underlying technology (which isn't new either) for many of the notable Google Maps features, but how Google used it to make a useful user experience is the real story here.
