Understanding the Importance of Release
Early, Release Often
12/03/2002 12:47 PMWhat Often Happens when Commercial Source Developers "Go Open"
This is a pretty common tenet in the Open Source world and where
commercial developers often go wrong. If you are an ex-commercial
developer then you want desperately to reach a "1.0" stage or a "near
functional", "mostly baked" stage before going live. You wouldn't
want to release something piece meal, would you? After all -- that's
the way it's done. -- Scott Johnson

Compiere Release 2.5.1f
09/10/2004 06:24 PMSmart ERP+CRM solution for Small-Medium Enterprises in the global
marketplace covering all areas from customer management, supply chain
and accounting. For $2-200M revenue companies looking for "brick and
click" first tier functionality.
Compiere released its newest Production Release 2.5.1f !
The emphasis of this release was the improved Server infrastructure.
You can now monitor the (accounting, request, workflow, alert)
processors and their logs from the web. The default URL is
http://localhost/compiereMonitor
and requires to log on with a user id with System Administrator role.
New are also Alerts - you define the situation you want to be alerted
of and Compiere will send an email with details, if the conditions are
met.
Document Value based Workflows allow you to start a workflow
automatically, if a certain condition is met in any Entity in the
system.
You can use this for example to do a credit check for new Business
Partners or when the address was changed. Together with the Document
Process Workflows and Alerts, you can now model all Business
Processes.
Due to Server Infrastructure changes, you need to
- Delete the jboss sub-directory Before upgrading (extracting the
zip/gz)
- After upgrading, you need to define Accounting and Request
Processors for your clients. They are created automatically if you
create a new client, but not for existing ones.
If you have a translated system, you should run "Synchronize
Terminology" after migration or after importing the translation.
The Toronto training was quickly fully booked. Note that the next
intensive training "from the source" is December 6-10 in Miami, FL ...
and book early if you want to guarantee your seat.

Notepad++ new release - v2.9
Notepad++ new release - v2.9
04/06/2005 08:41 PMNotepad++ is a source editor
(c/c++/java/html/xml/php/js/makefile/asp/VB/SQL/ObjC/Perl/Python/CSS..
.) written in C++ with the win32 API (without MFC strictly). The aim
of Notepad++ is to offer a small and efficient binary with a totally
customizable GUI.
This version, which enhances the Find/Replace dialog, gives to user
more control for search and replace functionality :
Search/Replace in the selection zone and Search/Replace in all opened
files.
However, the Find in Files feature is not in this release. I need more
time to do it.
Here's chang log of v2.9 :
1. fix a regular expression's replace bug.
2. enhance the regular expression find/replace feature.
3. fix Search Next/Previous Bookmark without bookmark bug.
4. "Find All" not only marks, but also keeps the style now.
5. add "Replace all in selection zone" feature.
6. add "Mark all in in selection zone" feature.
7. add "Replace all in all opened document" feature.
8. add "Find all in all opened document" feature.
9. fix a minor bug of restoring window position and size from
previous session.
10. Add a "clear" button to clear all marks in Find Dialog.

Benchw release 0.5b
12/28/2002 09:50 AMBenchw provides a toolset to benchmark the capabilities of several
different database engines for data warehouse type activities. It is
designed to provide a simple way to test data loading, index creation
plus query performance in the spirit of TPC-H. This release adds
default index generation and sapdb load capability - so now Oracle,
Mysql, Postgresql, DB2 and Sapdb are supported. The documentation has
been brought closer to completion. The generated form of the queries
has been finalized (it has changed from the alpha releases). A BSD
style license file has been included.
PHP 4.3.0 Release Announcement
PHP 4.3.0 Release Announcement
12/27/2002 12:20 PMAfter a long and arduous 8 months of development and testing, PHP
4.3.0 is
out! With regard to scope,
time, and effort, this
is the largest 4.x release of PHP, and it further elevates PHP's
standing as a
serious contender in the general purpose scripting language arena.
Command line interface
This version finalizes the separate command line interface (CLI) that
can be
used for developing shell and desktop applications (with
PHP-GTK). The CLI is always built,
but
installed automatically only if CGI version is disabled via
--disable-cgi
switch during configuration. Alternatively, one can use make
install-cli
target. On Windows CLI can be found in cli folder.
CLI has a number of differences compared to other server APIs. More
information
can be found here:
Streams
A very important "under the hood" feature is the streams API. It
introduces a
unified approach to the handling of files, pipes, sockets, and other
I/O
resources in the PHP core and extensions.
What this means for users is that any I/O function that works with
streams
(and that is almost all of them) can access built-in protocols, such
as
HTTP/HTTPS and FTP/FTPS, as well as custom protocols registered from
PHP
scripts. For more information please see:
New build system
This iteration of the build system, among other things, replaces the
slow
recursive make with one global Makefile and eases the integration of
proper
dependencies. Automake is only needed for its aclocal tool. The build
process is
now more portable and less resource-consuming.
Improvements
PHP 4.3.0 has many improvements and enhancements:
- GD library is now bundled with the distribution and it is
recommended
to always use the bundled version
- vpopmail and cybermut extensions are moved to PECL
- several deprecated extensions (aspell, ccvs, cybercash, icap)
and SAPIs (fastcgi, fhttpd) are removed
- speed improvements in a variety of string functions
- Apache2 filter is improved, but is still
considered experimental (use with PHP in prefork and not worker
(thread)
model since many extensions based on external libraries are not
thread
safe)
- various security fixes (imap, mysql, mcrypt, file upload, gd,
etc)
- new SAPI for embedding PHP in other applications
(experimental)
- much better test suite
- significant improvements in dba, gd, pcntl, sybase, and xslt
extensions
- debug_backtrace() should help with debugging
- error messages now contain URLs linking to pages describing the
error or
function in question
- Zend Engine has some fixes and minor performance
enhancements
- and TONS of other fixes, updates, new functions, etc
For the full list of changes in PHP 4.3.0, see the
ChangeLog file.

Release The Artist In You
07/30/2004 04:59 AMSo, you've tinkered with GarageBand long enough that you've actually
performed and recorded cover versions of songs. The more you listen to
your own recordings, the more confident that your cover version is
actually better than the original version. The next logical step, of
course then, is to publish and sell your songs to the world, and watch
the money roll in.
But before you do that, remember to take care
of the
royalties first.

04/14/2005 01:53 PMwebERP v2.9b Release
webERP v2.9b Release
01/06/2005 07:43 PMwebERP is an integrated accounting system written in PHP including
multi-currency AR, AP, Sales Orders, Purchase Orders, Sales Analysis,
Standard Costing, Mulit-location inventory, General Ledger, Bank
Accounts and reconciliations.
The major changes in this release, apart from a few smaller bug fixes
and minor improvements throughout are:
- multilanguage for users. With gettext installed on your server
webERP can now be viewed in various languages. A couple of languages
are complete and more are currently being translated! Some good
multilanguage tools are contained in the distribution for creating,
viewing and editing the language translation files. We are currently
completing multilanguage for reports including a solution for more
complicated languages that require multi-byte characters. For anyone
who would like to contribute to webERP multilanguage we have the easy
to use tools mentioned above setup at http://www.weberp.org/translate.
More information about multilanguage can be found in our documents
section (DocManager) and by joining the multilanguage list.
- unified database and other system messages. Facilities to present
messages have been built and the entire system has been modified to
use these common facilities. This should enhance the user experience
and ensure messages now and in the future will always be handled in a
"perfect" manner.
- cleaned up the code throughout. This included formatting for
increased readability of the code, increasing speed where possible by,
for example, using single quotes everywhere instead of double quotes
which take time to be parsed and formatting to better display long
lines such as sql and printf. More about coding standards can be found
in our documents (DocManager).
- the manual can now be accessed directly from the webERP system quick
menu at the top. It has been separated into sections based on the
table of contents to minimize loading size and time. There are
facilities within for printing sections or the complete manual.
We have also added some processes and facilities that will assist
webERP in moving forward. There are now current and long term roadmaps
that help keep us aware and focused on development. Processes for
official releases and patches have been refined. And more...

Official Migrating from PHP4 to PHP5
Docs
03/06/2004 01:53 AMPHP 5 and the integrated Zend Engine 2 have greatly improved PHP's
performance and capabilities, but great care has been taken to break
as little existing code as possible. So migrating your code from PHP 4
to 5 should be very easy. Most existing PHP 4 code should be ready to
run without changes, but you should still know about the few
differences and take care to test your code before switching versions
in production environments. -- Nuno Lopes
Andi Gutman points this out:
>Paragraph: Classes must be declared before used
>is no longer true. For most cases this is allowed now.
To be accurate, we solved the BC issue but for people who want to
use the
PHP 5 features (such as implementing interfaces), they will have to
declare
the class before using it.

and the effect is really strange.

Eudora's traditionally pinned the CPU when downloading mail for me,
and 100% is 100%, right? Well, turns out Chris was right. The importer
does suck down a lot of CPU time, especially on large mailboxes. I

Notae Tiger Only?
Notae Tiger Only?
06/17/2005 04:21 PM Core Data is genius. Sadly, so is the idea of a saved document
being a lot of RTF files. I like the
recoverability aspect of text(ish) files and I like the searchability
and speed of database files.
To move Notae to Core Data would essentially be a re-write, but not
a long one. It would have quick searching and generally be a very,
very nifty little gadget. Downside is that it would be
Tiger-only.
To keep Notae in its current state, and release in a couple of
months, would give a recoverable archive and no speedy searching
without adding a lot of code I'd rather not write.
So, Tiger-only and a lot of very cool features, or
Panther-compatible and a little muted on the fun parts?
