May the force be with them

May the force be with them 09/13/2004 10:29 AM
For Star Wars fans, the arrival of the original trilogy on DVD is nothing short of remarkable, after watching hundreds of lesser science fiction movies make their way into special edition packaging. While the four-disc box set, which will hit stores on Sept. 21 will apparently include the additional scenes added by George Lucas when the trio was re-released in theatres, transferring the movies to DVD was no small task. Even though the original film elements of the three movies have spent most of their time resting in vaults, USA Today reports, they had gathered wear and tear that would have been noticeable had they been transferred, as is, straight to DVD. "The most popular movies are often, by far and away, in the worst shape," John Lowry of Lowry Digital Images said. "They have been printed more often and been duplicated more often, and each of those passes adds scuffs, dirt, scratches and the like." The solution? 600 networked Power Mac G5 computers with the equivalent of 378 terabytes of hard-disk storage, along with 80 employees and months of painstaking labor. "The result is as if a veil has been lifted: The annoying hail of visible noise is gone, and colors are richer. The footage seems to shine, as if brand-new. 'We have given it the kind of sharpness which doesn't create ugly edges,' Lowry said."

A "broken" force

A "broken" force 01/05/2005 11:31 AM
At a time when too few are willing or able to speak openly and with candor about the harmful impact of this administration's policies, it is refreshing -- if disturbing -- to hear what Lt. Gen. James R. "Ron" Helmly, chief of the Army Reserve, has to say. The Baltimore Sun reports today on a memo Helmly wrote to senior Army leaders about the health of his command, which "is rapidly degenerating into a 'broken' force," in his view. The draining demands of overseas commitments, especially in Iraq and Afghanistan, and the unwillingness of Army and Pentagon officials to change "dysfunctional" policies are exacerbating the problem, he wrote, and the Reserve is in "grave danger" of being unable to undertake any other missions.

By now, every newsreading sentient being on the planet has heard of the New Yorker piece on how the torture happened. Part of it, that hasn’t been written up much, got me mad, red-faced sleep-stealing mad. It seems that a lot of the planning was based on amateurish racist loony-science. Everywhere you look around this story there is filth, filth...

Force to farce

Force to farce 06/05/2005 10:55 PM
I'm keeping my head down to work on my book, most of the time, but Kerry Lauerman asked for contributions to a package about "Star Wars," and, well, I couldn't resist. You can read my thoughts on why I, as a passionate teenage science fiction fan in the 1970s, was never a fan of George Lucas's epic, here.

On a related subject, I watched "Spaceballs" for the first time during my last vacation, in the company of my family, and while it was as, well, slight as I expected, there was something about the notion of "The Schwartz" (Mel Brooks' answer to the Force) that really seemed to charm my five-year-old boys, who took up the concept as a rallying cry and did not let it go.

SoundSpectrum G-Force

SoundSpectrum G-Force 06/22/2005 01:56 AM

The guys over at SoundSpectrum gave me a free copy of G-Force Platinum, their high-end visualizer for media players. While I have no need at all for a visualizer (I always minimize my media player), I played with it for a while this morning and I can vouch for the fact that this is perhaps the ultimate manifestation of the sound visualizer (the WS_FTP of visualizers, if you will).

Here are the different aspects of visualization you can pick:

 1. Waveshape
 2. Color map
 3. Flowfield
 4. Target frame rate
 5. Visual responsivenes

And you can set the cycle rates for the first three so it'll run through different options as fast or slow as you like. If you get bored you can "Start a randomly selected particle" which seems to send some shape through the image. When you finally find something you like, you can screencap it.

For my tastes, I had good luck with this:

 • Waveshape: Flower-Power Eire Atom
 • Color Map: Sunchemicals from a Bee
 • Flowfield: DT - Tip

There seem to be hundreds of options for each variable. (The names are great: "Meet the Zipperheads II," "The Road Less Traveled," etc.)

This was trippy enough to make me want to throw up if I watched it too much. What are these things? Just math equations somewhere? My very procedural code-oriented mind can't even begin to guess how they put these things together.

Anyway, while fun to play with, I wouldn't have much use for a visualizer unless I was a DJ in a club with a 12 foot plasma screen behind me (is that who uses visualizers? If not, who?). However, I sat my daughter on my lap for a few minutes, and she looked at the screen with the same expression as when we watched fireworks exploding over Cinderella's Castle at DisneyWorld.

The Sound Spectrum guys were cool enough to provide me with another license to give away. The first email to the contact address in the footer gets it. It's been claimed, thanks. This is a stupid way to give this away, but I can't think of anything better right now.
