In the Charts: Media Center 2005 PCs
Take Center Stage Among Desktops
12/29/2004 11:54 AM
This month's Top 15 Desktop PCs chart highlights two trends: the emergence of powerful new gaming systems that have sophisticated style, and the rapidly growing selection of Media Center PCs, which expand PC-based home entertainment beyond gaming. Examples of the former are two new Athlon-fueled machines that sit atop the power section of our chart: Alienware's Aurora 64 FX-55 and ABS's Ultimate M5-64. Both of these systems are visually appealing without shouting "I'm just for games." Not only are they the two fastest systems on the chart, but they also produced outstanding sound with their high-end Creative Sound Blaster Audigy 2 cards and their 5.1-channel Logitech speakers (the X-530 and the Z-680, respectively).

NewsGator Offering in Windows XP Media Center Edition 2004 Enables Users to Read Selected Content, or Watch On-Demand Video Content

DENVER, CO - June 4, 2004 - Today, NewsGator Technologies announced that the recently launched NewsGator Media Edition is featured in Windows XP Media Center Edition 2004's "Online Spotlight," an online guide created specifically for Media Center Edition PC customers that offers a central location for them to find the latest third-party services and software, such as music, movie trailers, news updates and even Karaoke.

NewsGator provides a mechanism for Media Center PC users to easily find NewsGator software and services online, without having to separately download anything from the NewsGator web site. Both text and multimedia content is supported, and information that has not already been viewed on another device can be displayed by synchronizing user subscriptions with NewsGator Online Services.

"We're excited to be included in Online Spotlight - this will dramatically increase our visibility to the many thousands of Media Center PC users," said Greg Reinacker, President & Founder of NewsGator Technologies.

NewsGator Media Center Edition is included as part of NewsGator Online Services. NewsGator Online Services includes three other content reader editions, which allow users to read content they have subscribed to from any web browser (with Web Edition), any email client (with POP Edition), and from a mobile wireless device (with Mobile Edition), which is a powerful feature for road warriors who use mobile devices to access information while on the road. The service also provides exclusive, subscriber-only content to its subscribers, as well as the ability to search for content that matches a specific keyword or URL, and return that content in a feed. NewsGator Online Services pricing starts at $5.95/month per user.

"Media Center PCs allow consumers to have faster and more efficient access to all of their favorite digital content when, where, and how they want," said Brad Brooks, Director of Marketing at Microsoft Corp. "With the NewsGator Media Center Edition, NewsGator Technologies is delivering a complementary and innovative service that will let Media Center Edition PC users easily access their customized choice of news services."

More about NewsGator Media Center Edition

This is the latest step in the "any time, any place, any device" strategy that distinguishes the NewsGator product line. NewsGator Online Services allows users to read one set of content from any device, without duplication. The combined power of NewsGator Media Center Edition and Online Services offers customers a productive and fun way to access their personalized subscriptions and information from any device, whenever they need it.

Intel's Uh-Oh

Intel's Uh-Oh 09/03/2004 12:06 PM
  • Mercury News (reg req): Intel forecast rattles stocks. In an ominous sign for Silicon Valley's fragile recovery, Intel slashed its revenue forecast Thursday amid falling worldwide demand for computer chips.
  • This is disturbing, but not a sign of doom. Intel has been having more troubles lately than just customer demand, including a surprising number of internal miscues leading to delayed products. Still, Silicon Valley is holding its breath at the moment. Is the recovery going to be sustained, much less sustainable? My gut tells me that doom-and-gloom is a little too pessimistic right now. A lot is going right around the valley these days. My bet is that this is more a hiccup than a serious stumble.

Geodog is back from Costa Rica

Geodog is back from Costa Rica 10/29/2003 01:16 AM
We are back from our month in Costa Rica. We had a fabulous vacation. We learned a little Spanish, met some really nice people, and we had a great time living outdoors, hiking or swimming almost every day. In fact, we had so much fun that we didn't get around to doing all the research we had planned on housing costs, schools, employment opportunities, health care, and all the other details that would be involved in living there in the future. We just played. We also concluded that while we are definitely interested in going to Costa Rica to live for a year to two at some point in the near future, for now we are staying here in Berkeley. I highly recommend Costa Rica in the summer to anyone looking for a moderately priced vacation with great hiking, great wildlife viewing, great adventures and really friendly people. If anyone is interested, I put a few of the 300+ photos I took up on the web at http://www.thebishop.net/gallery/CRHigh/. Email me for the password if you want to see photos with people in them. If you are interested in my impressions of Costa Rica and travel recommendations, I'll be posting a travel report of sorts here and at Geodog: Costa Rica over the next few days. I plan to start writing here again, although I am going to try to avoid losing myself in politics again -- it takes up too much time, doesn't feel productive, and there seem to be plenty of people doing a good job exposing the lies of the Bush administration. Now it is time for me to restart the job/entrepreneurial opportunities hunt that I put on hold last spring. I am looking for anything that involves using my analytical, organizational, and people skills (see resume) to work with smart people on an interesting product or project, but I suspect that the easiest way to market myself is going to be as a Software Product/Project/Program manager. I'm hoping to find something in the East Bay or San Francisco, but I'm looking farther afield as well. If you know of any openings or of any interesting companies in the Bay Area that are hiring, feel free to leave me a comment or send me an email....

Writing is addictive, but sometimes I need to break the habit. After Bush's War on Iraq started, and after I started SARS Watch Org, about the SARS epidemic, I stopped my Geodog political and technology writing, and worked furiously and full time on SARS Watch Org for about 3 months, stopping as the epidemic wound down. When I stopped working on it, I found I needed a break from writing. I was (and remain) discouraged about the political situation, and I decided to spend more time enjoying my family and the beautiful summer we were having, so I haven't updated Geodog's MT Weblog in a while. Recently I have been concentrating more on coding and photography than on writing. I used the tools and skills I learned about with SARSWatch to update the TheBishop.Net's News page to actually do something useful, by having it display headlines and excerpts of articles from publications like the Washington Post, the New York Times, and the BBC. The page is updated hourly, making it a useful place to check out the news. I have put up a ton of family pictures in the photo gallery, and actually put up some public pictures, like the ones from the O'Reilly Emerging Technology Conference. And while I took a break this summer from my "Geodog" political writing, I did continue to maintain my linklog. To keep my technology muscles limber, I also started a Costa Rica Travel Wiki to play with the technology and to store information about my upcoming trip to Costa Rica. Now I am heading down to Costa Rica for a month, to try and gage what it would be like to live down there. When I last visited Costa Rica for a month in 1994, it was a great place to travel, but I wasn't looking at it from the perspective of living there. This time we are going to check out housing costs, schools, employment opportunities, health care, and so on, as well as working on our Spanish and just having a great time. As the situation in the United States continues to deteriorate, it seems only practical to take a look at some alternatives, and Costa Rica sounds appealing from afar. We will see what it looks like close up. I expect that all my surfing in Costa Rica will be waves instead of the net, although I might check my mail once a week or so. Feel free to send me email at my travel address, costaricatim at thebishop.ne t. I expect that I will take up writing as Geodog again in the fall, after school starts up. Until then, hasta luego y vaya con dios.

Impressions of Costa Rica after a
    month's visit: Biodiversity
    10/29/2003 01:16 AM
In Costa Rica biodiversity isn't a just a slogan or a buzzword, it is an observable fact. The country is teeming with life. We saw amazing numbers of birds, reptiles, insects and plants. Even when we weren't looking for them, the number and kinds of birds and insects that we saw just walking around rural towns was astonishing, and the variety we saw when we were hiking in the national parks was awe-inspiring. For example, on one short afternoon hike on Rincón de la Vieja I saw 2 species of toucans, 2 species of parrots, a laughing falcon, a cuckoo, a woodpecker, several kinds of finches, flycatchers, magpies and jays. That was just some of the birds. I also saw 2 bats, an agouti, a snake, several kinds of frogs and toads, several kinds of lizards, several kinds of ants including leaf cutter ants and army ants, and thousands of butterflies. I'm not much on plants, so I can't name many of the different trees I saw, but in the course of one afternoon I passed through at least 5 kinds of habitat: cloud forest, tropical rainforest, dry tropical forest, open savannah and what looked like California live oak highlands. I have done a lot of hiking in the United States, and I have never seen anything like it. As the guidebooks point out, there are more species of birds in Costa Rica (650) than in all of the United States and Canada combined. All of this in a country the size of West Virginia. If you like hiking and wildlife viewing, especially bird-watching, it is hard to imagine a better place. And if you are a fan of the writings of Charles Darwin, David Quammen and Edwin O. Wilson, as I am, it is a great place to see, in the flesh as it were, exactly what they were writing about....

    month's visit: Tico Time

Impressions of Costa Rica after a
    month's visit: Tico Time
    10/29/2003 01:16 AM
The pace of life in Costa Rica is considerably slower than it is in the United States. Part of this was undoubtedly because we traveled as tourists, mostly in rural Costa Rica, in the low season. I'm sure that it would have been somewhat different in San Jose in the high season, or working at Intel's plant in Heredia. Still, people in Costa Rica aren't as frantic about getting things done on time as people are in the US. Costa Ricans act as though people are more important than deadlines, and people expect to make time for each other, and to wait for other people and to have other people wait for them. Expatriates, and some Costa Ricans, call this living on Tico Time. Punctuality is not next to godliness, and waiting is not seen as offensive, or as a waste of time. We ran into this all the time. The best example of this was one day when a hotel owner offered to take us and some other people in the hotel up to see turtles coming ashore to lay eggs at Ostional (a fantastic trip). He said that we would leave the hotel after lunch, and I asked him exactly when after lunch we should be ready to go. He shrugged his shoulders, looked at me and slapped his empty wrist and said "you see a watch? We will leave when everybody is ready to go." It worked both ways -- once we were about to go out to dinner and another hotel owner stopped us and asked if we would help her middle-school aged son with his homework, because he had a test the next day but was still confused about the difference between the comparative and the superlative. Having made her house into a home for our family (mi casa es su casa), she expected that we would do no less for her family. So we happily postponed our dinner for an hour to tutor her son. Living with tico time was not always easy. One morning we got up early, hoping to climb up to the top of Rincón de la Vieja volcano before it was covered with clouds, but when we got to the entrance to Rincón de la Vieja National Park, we found a scene from the California Department of Motor Vehicles. There was long line of other hikers waiting to pay...

I was going to write "hitting the road now, see you on the other side," but I realized that I'm going to be flying, not hitting the road, and I'll probably see you a few times along the way. Leaving on a trip is really not an important event anymore except that the likelihood that something bad is going to happen to you increases for a period of time.

Anyway, for those of you who are going to ETech, see you you face to face soon.

    Leaving Pompignan I

    Leaving Pompignan I 06/29/2004 05:12 PM

As it appears we’re about to move to a town with DSL capabilities, it would be good to hear from anyone with strong opinion on Wanadoo vs Freebox vs Tiscali vs Noos and so on, haut-débit-wise.

I’d rather not give more money than absolutely necessary to the bloated France Telecom, and the dinks at Tiscali haven’t exactly curried a lot of favour, but if the big-pipes 2048k offers they’re flinging about actually work, then so be it.

A bell is a cup, until it is struck.

    Leaving Pompignan II

Leaving Pompignan II 07/28/2004 12:51 PM

So yeah, we moved. Everyone says it’s stressful to move, up there with divorce and sudden unemployment, but christ on a bike it takes a lot out of you. Never mind the backache and barked knuckles: you’re left without a soul.

We’re now about an hour and a half east of Pompignan, in the Rhône Valley, hugged up next to the vaguely shitty Bagnols-sur-Cèze. Actually strike that – it’s only shitty if all you see of it is the shopping malls and supermarkets and their parking lots while you rush around for food and drink between time spent figuring where to put all the god damn stuff that was schlepped over from the old place. The town has a heart, we found out this morning: each Wednesday every street and sidestreet is filled with market stalls, patrolled by women pushing baby strollers, cops in funny pillbox hats, and Dutch tourists. Olives, baby: buckets of them.

The new house is nice. There is interesting plaster moulding. All doorways are higher than my forehead. The dogs have a yard to destroy. Here are some pictures.

    Leaving Las Vegas

Leaving Las Vegas 01/16/2004 10:57 AM
Sorry for the absence, folks... I've just limped back into New York from a lost weekend of fear and loathing in Las Vegas, during which just about the last thing on my mind was this blog. Before I post anything real - and I have several rants percolating - I want to thank you for having maintained what I consider a commendable civility while I was off contributing to the decline of civilization, despite your passionately conflicting political beliefs. There's been froth and pitch and a lot of wit. Best of all, you've been sounding like grown-ups. (A virtue I've come to appreciate a lot more of late.) I think the "constructive combat" I wished for in my last post may actually be arising here. This can be a venue where the vectors of opinion that presently rend our beloved country can come to appreciate each other a little better, if only for our sense of humor. I don't think either side is likely to win many converts. We're all pretty convinced. But if we maintain our currently reduced level of name-calling, we might grow back some of the tolerance that has become all too rare among our fellow citizens and upon which democracy itself depends. I be back at it myself as soon as I've had a chance to clear my head. In that service, I'm off to find myself a latte. Since my place here is in Little Italy, that will be easy enough to do. Might even pick up a New York Times while I'm at it......

    Leaving the Earth

Leaving the Earth 03/06/2004 02:03 AM
Rannva dropped this URL on an older blog entry, so I figured I should pop it up to a larger readership, since it's just too cool:

    Orion's Arm Worldbuilding Group.

A huge collection of Creative Commons -licensed alternative world history (and future) that should make the soul of every hardcore sci-fi fan tickle. I only took a quick glance through it, but already I started getting ideas...

I think this is another good example on how uncoordinated efforts of dedicated amateurs can produce things that rival commercial alternatives. I don't think it replaces them, though, but it can be a good choice among many. The Internet has really allowed a whole new kind of collaboration efforts to take place, things that were rather difficult to do before. Essentially the Internet is now doing the job of the scientific journals, and it is not surprising that many of the academic papers are being published on the Internet first these days...

The Relief of Leaving a Job

The Relief of Leaving a Job 03/14/2005 05:01 PM
I've noticed a funny thing in the last year or so. The vast majority of the time someone I know leaves a job (or is fired) two trends seem to recur: A sense of relief: "I'm so glad I'm not at that place anymore." A complete loss of "spare" time: "I'm busier now than when I was working full-time!" Maybe everyone should change jobs once or twice a decade? Maybe people should ask themselves a bit more often one question:...

    Are Spammers Leaving The Business?

Are Spammers Leaving The Business? 05/06/2004 02:53 AM
It appears that the combination of technology solutions and legal crackdowns on spammers may be having some effect on a few of the weaker willed spammers. USA Today is reporting that some spammers are finding other lines of work. I'd be more encouraged if there were a corresponding decrease in the amount of spam - but most studies seem to show that it's increasing (and my own personal stats support this). One interesting note is that some spammers say they plan on becoming "reformed" spammers who try to come up with better anti-spam solutions. Can you trust a spammer to help stop spam? I'm not so sure.
