Shame on you, Dick Cheney, Shame on you.
Shame on you, Dick Cheney, Shame on you.
01/12/2004 12:47 AMI can't believe Cheney
changed his stance on gay marriage, and so completely at that.
What kind of father goes out on a national stage and says he
doesn't believe his own daughter deserves the same rights in her life that he
enjoys with his own marriage?
It's not like Dick and Mary have a bad relationship, all his quotes
from 2000 supported her and kept her out of the limelight, while she
put off grad school to work on his campaign and consulted on gay
issues for the 2000 election. They reportedly accept Mary's longtime
partner, Heather Poe, into their home and call her part of the
family.
The vice president and his wife have fought for family values
without completely alienating their daughter until now. I know
sometimes career takes precidence over family and that Bush and Cheney
have shown on more than one occasion that they can be hypocritical,
but Cheney just proved he's worse than all that. He's a shitty father
for not defending his daughter.

For Shame Zend! For Shame!
For Shame Zend! For Shame!
12/28/2002 08:49 AMFor Shame Zend! For Shame!
I saw over on PHP Everywhere that Zend is having an Interview / Online
event with Zeev about PHP 5 (Zeev = Senior Demi God of PHP type of
fellow). Yesterday it came up fine but I refreshed the window this
morning and then got this message:
Microsoft VBScript runtime error '800a004c'
Path not found
D: INTERWISE WWWVC IWCAMPUS ICCFILES ZEND EVENTPAGE
OI1336../../../../Include/DBConnectionString.inc, line 52 (spaces
added for proper breaks in this template) [_Go_]
You know something ... I could actually care less about the VBScript
stuff (but it is funny) but I do find it really unacceptable that a
vendor you pay money to goes down like this. PHP is a highly
international community and, consequently, so is Zend. While it may
be 7 am in Boston, it's not in London or Israel or other markets they
serve. Hasn't anyone heard of monitoring your site for failure and
then pinging an admin's pager ?
Note: I'm not saying I'm perfect here myself but I'm also not running
this type of a 24x7 service. Still the hosting for my clients doesn't
go down.

Get Google Desktop to Support Firefox
12/19/2004 03:25 PMGoogle recently released Google Desktop (for Windows users), as you
are probably already aware. Google Desktop is a "desktop search
application that provides full text search over your email, computer
files, chats, and the web pages you've viewed."
Great!
The hang-up: the program searches web data — e.g. cached pages
and bookmarks — in only one browser, Internet Explorer.
Where you come in: Google has provided a feature request form and
specifically the option to request support for Mozilla Firefox. Get to
submitting. And if you have another minute of time to spare, offer
Mozilla Thunderbird as an additional request in the "Suggestion" text
box.
Pinder, does this entry qualify as a spin-off to the Google Browser
trilogy?
Update: A F.A.Q. entry has been created by Google Desktop —
possibly in response to many directed questions — with
information on the current status of compatibilty between the browser
and the search application.

Microsoft Blogger : How can I trust
Firefox?
12/22/2004 01:23 AMMicrosoft employee Peter Torr has started a flame war in his own blog
today. Torr claims that the distribution and code signing of Firefox
isn't up to scratch. Torr provides screenshots of the latest XPSP2
protection IE but fails to mention the poor protection in IE 6 SP1
which many more users are still using. Nevertheless if you enjoy
battling it out about Firefox vs IE then this is a read for you.
Here's a snip:
"But the thing that makes me really not trust the browser is that
it doesn't matter how secure the original code is if the typical usage
pattern of the browser requires users to perform insecure actions.
· Installing Firefox requires downloading an unsigned binary
from a random web server
· Installing unsigned extensions is the default action in the
Extensions dialog
· There is no way to check the signature on downloaded program
files
· There is no obvious way to turn off plug-ins once they are
installed
· There is an easy way to bypass the "This might be a
virus" dialog"

06/22/2005 02:12 AMI have run into a few pages over at Microsoft that have not loaded
from time to time in Firefox, and really did not think anything about
it. Apparently it is getting the dandruff up of some of the Firefox
development team. I am not all that surprised, but I would be curious
to have a technical explanation on why they will not load or are they
simply and truly being blocked? If someone can answer that question I
think that would explain a lot on why it is happening. [weblogs

The Zen Of Button Mashing
The Zen Of Button Mashing
04/11/2005 11:42 PMCan you get a sense of zen from a video game review? Clive Thompson
is discussing his latest video game reviews for Slate, and notes that,
while describing one of the games, he realized
the zen aspects of "button mashing." Button mashing,
of course, is the experience of playing a particularly complex
fighting game where the inexperienced player has absolutely no clue of
the various combinations and how to use them, and is forced, instead,
into random button mashing: just pushing all the buttons in a random
order and praying that something actually works. Hardcore gamers, of
course, recognize button mashing as the sign of a rank amateur who has
no business being near the console. However, Thompson finds that
button mashing is a form of zen learning -- and that by continuing to
button mash on a new game, one can get a grasp of the intricacies of
the moves, and eventually learn to step out of the character and use
the buttons more effectively. Of course, others might just call this
trial by error, but it's probably all relative anyway.
