Cheap, Illegal Software

Cheap, Illegal Software 06/10/2004 05:43 PM

OEM software scams on the rise: In a moment of serious self-delusion I almost fell for one of these outfits. Yes, I'll admit, I wanted Dreamweaver MX for $60.

[sigh] Too good be to true, and all that.

It is not difficult to recognise the pirates from reputable resellers: their prices are typically much lower than those offered by official resellers. They often use anonymous domain hosting services and their sites lack sufficient contact information.

More importantly, the software they offer is unlikely to be OEM. Adobe never offered Acrobat or Photoshop (with the exception of Photoshop Elements) as OEM software, but it is widely available from OEM vendors.

I asked Chris for his opinion, and he noted that the ordering page of the site I was looking wasn't even secured with SSL. Yikes.

AOL's Cheap Computer Hides Expensive

AOL's Cheap Computer Hides Expensive
Service?

How desperate is AOL getting in trying to slow down the rapid decline in their subscriber lists? Knowing that Wall Street will freak if they dare to lower their dialup prices to anything even remotely more competitive, they're now trying to sell a cheap computer to hide the high dialup costs. The way it works is you get a very basic computer for about $300, but you need to agree to a year's worth of AOL's $24/month dialup service. The difference between that and a cut-rate dialup pretty much wipes away any "savings" from this cheap computer. However, don't tell that to AOL. They're insisting that the most expensive dialup service around, that's bleeding customers at faster and faster rates isn't expensive at all. They don't have any reason for it, other than they say so: "I categorically deny the service is expensive." Well, that's convincing. I hate to break it to AOL, but it's not people inside AOL who determine whether or not your service is expensive. It's your competitors who consistently price well below what you offer, and your customers who see greener (cheaper, faster) pastures elsewhere.

Cheap Computing and Open Source Movement
Reduce Software Costs By 90% For Small
Business.
01/05/2005 03:13 AM
Small Businesses who want enterprise software such as CRM (Customer Relationship Management), Project Management, and eLearning have typically been ignored by the software industry. Change is coming, however, and it may be the software makers themselves who end up feeling left out. With abundant and cheap computing power and new feature-rich Open Source Business applications, small businesses can now bypass commercial software altogether. With Managed Application Service providers filling the technological gap, small businesses can digitize key parts of their operations without making large investments in consultants, hardware, or software licensing. Mobilization of Software Developers: The Free Software Movement by Margret S. Elliott and Walter Scacchi
http://ope nsource.mit.edu/papers/elliottscacchi2.pdf

Abstract by Author:
Free/open source software (F/OSS) development projects are growing at a rapid rate. Globally dispersed virtual communities with large groups of software developers contribute time and effort often without pay. One force behind this phenomenon is the Free Software Movement (FSM), a 20 year-old social movement whose purpose is to promote the use of free software instead of proprietary software. We show how the ideology of the FSM influences software development work practices in F/OSS communities and how an occupational community of F/OSS developers has emerged from this movement. We present results from an empirical study of a F/OSS development community, GNUenterprise (GNUe) whose purpose is to build an Enterprise Resource Planning system. We show how the beliefs in freedom and freedom of choice, and the values of cooperative work and community building are manifested in the GNUe norms of informal self-management, immediate acceptance of fellow contributors, and open disclosure.

PHP: Free Software on Free Tools

PHP: Free Software on Free Tools 05/17/2004 10:25 AM

Open Source: Open Source Scripting Made Easy: This is an article about PHP scripting tools that makes an important point:

Commercial scripting languages have drawn success from powerful and widely used development tools: ASP has Visual Studio, ColdFusion has Macromedia's Dreamweaver, and JSP has a variety of tools from commercial sources such as Borland and open source projects such as Eclipse and NetBeans. PHP's enormous success, however, is not tied to specific tools.

Some friends of mine have been working with Microsoft's .Net platform. They tell me it's amazing ("fan-friggin'-tastic," one of them called it). This is great, but I guess I don't like anything where the barrier to entry is so high — first you have to have a Windows server, then you have to have the Windows dev environment.

I code PHP in EditPlus, which cost me all of $30, and that was an optional purchase because there are so many other free alternatives. Maybe I'm just a snob. Via PHP|Architect.

Computer Glitch Gives Free Gas, But
Stores Your ID For Police
05/05/2004 04:13 AM
Everyone knows that gas prices have been hovering around all time highs lately in the US, so imagine the joy that some people felt when it was discovered that a computer glitch at a certain gas station chain meant you could get free gas if you inserted your driver's license instead of your credit card. The glitch went unnoticed by the company (though, very noticed by customers) for three weeks causing thousands of dollars in losses for the company. The only problem is that, while the machines might not have charged users, it did store all the data from the driver's license. In other words, if you took part, the police may be knocking on your door with a bill - and a misdemeanor fraud charge.

The Computer Shop UK has a deal on a PC that comes with a firmware-locked modem that can only dial one ISP, Supanet. In order to get unlocked, you need to pay a pound a minute to call their support line and then fork over £60 so they can post you a CD that will restore your modem to good working order.

Yoz has the deal, and a link to a utility that can unlock your modem without paying Computer Shop's ransom. Link
