Bayesian decision-making rules our

Bayesian decision-making rules our
unconscious
01/22/2004 02:47 AM
Bayesian statistical modelling is a tool used to compare new events to past experience, something useful for applications as diverse as predicting whether a message is spam and whether a Web-page is relevant to a given subject. New research indicates that we do a lot of Bayesian comparisons in our heads, particularily when engaged in athletic tasks:
"Most decisions in our lives are done in the presence of uncertainty," Dr. Körding said. "In all these cases, the prior knowledge we have can be very helpful. If the brain works in the Bayesian way, it would optimally use the prior knowledge."

The researchers drew the analogy to tennis in their paper, and it is not the first study to suggest that athletes have a more sophisticated understanding of mathematics than even they may realize.

Whalers Knocked Down

Whalers Knocked Down 06/24/2005 02:59 PM

Good news: International Whaling Commission rejected Japan's proposal to abolish a whale sanctuary and urged it not to double its quota of killing whales for disputed scientific research.

The Japanese claim they must kill whales to properly study them, including their stomach contents to glean details of their diets, while other nations argue that technological advances mean killing the whales is not necessary.

Japan sells the meat from the whales killed for science, which is allowed under commission rules. Critics call this commercial whaling in disguise.

Are there any information on what the Japanese scientists are researching? Whatever it is, it must be important enough to kill hundreds of whales every year. *snort*

What I really want to know is which way South Korea voted.

Despite the international moratorium on killing whales, each year about 80 minke whales are caught in South Korean waters and about 150 tons of whale meat consumed in the country.

South Korea has no whaling industry. Greenpeace claims, however, its accidental catches are "100 times greater than other countries," and that a mature minke whale can fetch $100,000.

Sheesh. That's a lot of oops. Korean environmentalists are up in arms as well but I think the balance is unstable for the moment.

Akamai Knocked Out, Major Websites
Offline

Akamai Knocked Out, Major Websites
Offline
05/24/2004 12:27 PM
It appears that Akamai got hit with some sort of denial of service attack this morning, which kn ocked their servers offline for about an hour and a half. This, in turn, took a number of major websites that use Akamai offline as well, including eBay, Google, Yahoo! and Microsoft. This, of course, is going to raise a bunch of questions about Akamai being a single point of failure that can take down so many sites. Considering Akamai's entire point is that they distribute the content to many different remote servers, you would think that there would be something in place to handle this. It's also worth noting that, for all of Google's talk of managing their 100,000 or whatever servers, this report indicates that Google apparently relies pretty heavily on Akamai as well (which might throw some cold water on the idea that the two companies are competing). Either way, expect a debate to start about how to prevent such single-point-of-failure problems for so much online content.
