Internet Encyclopedia of Ukraine (IEU)
http://encyclopediaofukraine. com/

This site is under construction. Once completed, the Internet Encyclopedia of Ukraine (IEU) will be the most comprehensive source of information in English on Ukraine, its history, people, geography, society, economy, and cultural heritage. At present, the IEU team is working on phase 1 of the project: the creation of an Internet database containing the revised and updated contents of the five-volume Encyclopedia of Ukraine (University of Toronto Press, 1984-93) edited by Volodymyr Kubijovyc (vols. 1-2) and Danylo Husar Struk (vols. 3-5). Less than eight percent of this information is currently displayed on their site. New entries are being edited, updated, and added daily. Their ability to update this information and the speed with which they can make it available to Internet users worldwide will greatly depend on the availability of financial resources for their project. You can greatly contribute to the success of the Internet Encyclopedia of Ukraine by supporting their work morally and financially. LoveToKnow Free Online Encyclopedia

LoveToKnow Free Online Encyclopedia 12/03/2003 08:38 AM
LoveToKnow Free Online Encyclopedia
http://1911encyclopedia.org/
The LoveToKnow Free Online Encyclopedia is based on what many consider to be the best encyclopedia ever written. As a research tool, this 1911 encyclopedia edition is unparalleled - even today. LoveToKnow is in the process of updating and editing thousands of the entries, preserving the treasured entries that make it so unique, and adding entries on new relevant topics. We hope that you enjoy and learn from the LoveToKnow Free Online Encyclopedia and that it becomes one of your favorite places for reference information.

The Eleventh Edition filled 29 volumes and contains over 44 million words. It contains over 40,000 articles written by over 1,500 authors within their various fields of expertise. What was particularly remarkable was that many of the entries were written by the most famous people of the age. Henry Ford, for example, wrote the article on mass production. As such, it was considered to represent the sum of human knowledge at the beginning of the 20th Century.

Sir Kenneth Clark, in Another Part of the Wood, wrote of the Eleventh Edition: "One leaps from one subject to another, fascinated as much by the play of mind and the idiosyncrasies of their authors as by the facts and dates. It must be the last encyclopedia in the tradition of Diderot which assumes that information can be made memorable only when it is slightly colored by prejudice. When T.S. Eliot wrote 'Soul curled up on the window seat reading the Encyclopedia' he was certainly thinking of the eleventh edition."

04/15/2005 09:01 PM
Cory Doctorow: Morbus Iff sez, "Ghyll is a Creative Common licensed player-created world per the rules of "Lexicon: an RPG" (think: a fictional wikipedia, constrained by integration, consecutive letter definitions, and cranky scholars that write before 'before scholarly pursuits became professionalized (or possibly after they ceased to be)'). It has reached nearly 30 players, 200 pages of text, an incredibly large timeline, a hundred characters, and a to-scale ASCII map of the known world. Darkly humorous? Possible. Odd? Mmhmmm. All CC? Ayup.

"We're starting Round 2 next month (in essence, starting over again at letter A to further define the world). Notes about the announcement here, as well as links to the timeline, characters, and ASCII map." Link (Thanks, Morbus!)

Open-source, collaborative Web
encyclopedia passes mileston
03/13/2003 10:16 AM

Wikipedia , an open-source, collaborative , Web-based encyclopedia passed a major milestone this week: 100,000 published articles . After two years of work, numerous volunteers in English and several other languages have created, corrected , refined, and continued to hone a growing reference source for a diverse group of topics, while starting a similarly-organized dictionary on the side.

The project uses Wiki software to create web pages which any user can edit and write to. Multiple layers of backup and the vigilance of volunteer editors ward off vandalism.

Wikipedia is a public WikiWikiWeb, a website where anyone can edit any article at any time. Users build upon each other's edits, and vandalized articles are quickly repaired by restoring an older version. In Wikipedia's second year, thousands of volunteer editors from around the world have added 80,000 entries to the English version and 33,000 more to the other language editions of Wikipedia. This surge in growth has made Wikipedia the world's largest and fastest growing open content encyclopedia...
One way of exploring this project is to see what is says about itself, a hypertext encyclopedia community . It can also be compared to other distributed information projects, such as Everything2 , weblogs , ThinkCycle , or the Encyclopedia of North Carolina project.

England Libraries May All Get Wi-Fi 12/04/2003 01:07 PM
The majority of libraries in England already have broadband access but now the government is working on adding Wi-Fi: Most of the libraries in King County, outside of Seattle, have Wi-Fi. It's a great, low-cost way for libraries to offer Internet access without having to provide computers for everyone. My library always has a line of people waiting to get on its computers so perhaps with Wi-Fi some people could come in with their own computers to use the Internet. But I wonder how many of the people I see waiting in line there actually have laptops that they could bring with them instead....

Apple Flagship Store in London

Apple Flagship Store in London 02/13/2004 05:42 AM
Apple is planning to open a flagship store in Regent Street, London.
The outlet, which will span 20,000 sq ft is expected to sell Apple’s entire product line including the iPod digital music player range and Apple notebooks and desktop computers. Apple stores also sell digital cameras and camcorders and hold free interactive workshops.
This is wonderful, exciting news. Finally, an Apple store to call our own, and in the heart of London too. Now, Apple, while you're reading my thoughts, I'd quite like an Apple branded PDA and a decent office suite. Oh, and while you're at it, can you fix the address book too. It still sucks. Thanks!
