to start ranking in Google. There was a predictable cycle. Generally,
within 2-3 months they could count on having their site indexed and
even ranking for things like their company name or unique product."

Competitors (washingtonpost.com)
05/26/2004 01:25 AMwashingtonpost.com - Google Inc. took in nearly $1 billion last
year by selling ads to firms eager to market their wares online to
computer users. But a number of major businesses in the United States
and Europe are crying foul, going after Google in court and alleging
that the search-engine juggernaut is profiting illegally by trading on
their names.

Linux and thin clients
Linux and thin clients
04/14/2005 12:34 PMThe primary goal of Linux desktop operation is to give users access to
typical desktop applications -- word processors, spreadsheets, Web
browsers, etc. An alternative exists to this configuration, though:
thin client computing. In many respects, thin client computing is very
old; the typical mainframe model, with a large central server and many
dumb terminals attached to it, closely resembles thin client
computing. Thin clients, though, give users the ability to run GUI
programs. Before going too far with a desktop Linux deployment, you
may want to consider a Linux thin client solution. It's not for
everybody, but some sites can benefit from it.

Death to IMAP Clients
06/22/2005 02:06 AMAfter a long drawn out experience with numerous email clients
(mutt/isync, mutt/mailsync, Thunderbird, Eudora, Mail.app, even
Outlook Express in a moment of desperation) on various platforms (Mac,
Windows, Linux, FreeBSD) and spanning over four years, I've come to
the inevitable conclusion that all IMAP clients suck. Yes, all of
them--especially when used for off-line or disconnection operation. My
needs were simple, but I'd yet to find a tool that would Just Work. So
I've replaced my lofty goals of using...

09/06/2004 01:35 AMFor many years the primary focus of solution developers has been in
deploying Web-based applications. However, there are certain
situations when the limitations of a Web-based application can prevent
you from really providing your customers with the best possible
experience. In those times you really need a "Smart Client"
application. Today's model for building Smart Client applications
provides us with both local processing and access capabilities of a
traditional application, as well as the ease of deployment and update
that is the hallmark of a Web-based application.

Groove has a few wins under their belt in the school of "simple and
local." Each example highlighted the power of having arich, smart
client - which didn't necessarily need some round tripping http server
thingie as it's smarts. These sexy sucess stories really elucidate
for me - the future of RIAs.
I got to sing opera and make sure that the digital ID panel
didn'tdisgress into yet another discussion of "what is identity?"
I did get the FOAFnet meme and story out - and also got to hear danah boyd discuss the
difference between multiple identities (which she claims fragments the
user's sceanario) - as opposed to facets of one's life - which
presents a comprehensive simgle approach to multiple aspects of your
life.
I actually think she's right theoretically - but I'm afraid that
people need a metaphor like "multiple identities" - to hang their hat
on.

It has come to my attention that one of
my clients thinks I was talking about
him
12/24/2004 12:55 PMNo! It's not true!
I am in fact very happy with my client Marqui and what they've
been doing. However I am NOT happy that we don't have:
- a dabble mode of the product - so that anyone
and everyone can play with it. That will be solved soon. I mean "how
can we expect to generate interest and leads if now one can play with
the product?"
- where the hell are the stories? Marqui has over 200
customers - but we've only generated ONE story so far! How the hell
can we expect our bloggers to have something to write about - if
there's nothing to write about? Yo LARRY! What's up?
- where the hell is the corporate blog? How the
hell can you have a corporate voice and respond to criticism and
engage folks - without a formal voice? Again - this better happen
SOON!
- there are also some complaints I have about the
'PayBloggers' page (which is partially my fault anyway) - but besides
that - the above mentioned items are what REALLY needs attention to -
now.
So there you have it - I have complaints about Marqui - but let me
tell you - when I got something to day - I'm gonna say it.
No - it's another client that I sucked up to, and didn't speak my
mind. But don't worry I have a fiendish, long-term staretgy for them.
It's the ultimate chess match - trying to get somebody to do
something you want them to do - and make them think that they came up
with the idea.
:-)
Especially since this particular client seems to do that all the
time anyway and it's how he expects to work with others. So after a
long time, I just give up fighting him head on, and now it's jujitsu -
let his energy put him where he needs to go, while making sure he
falls in the right place and in the right way.
And perhaps 'falls' is the wrong word. Maybe it's 'fulfills his
destiny'.
