Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy isn't sounding too flash. "This is a terrible, terrible film and it makes me want to weep." At least we enjoyed the trailer!

Forty years ago today 02/15/2004 02:33 PM
Actually, it was in 1960, four years before the Beatles showed up on Ed Sullivan, that Doug McIlroy published Macro instruction extensions of compiler languages, which appears to be a seminal paper in the literature of metaprogramming. I mention this because a number of folks have responded to last week's item, Programs that write programs, pointing out that Lisp programmers have been there, done that:
"your note about code generation, and the referenced discussions - bits of which i'd already read elsewhere, left me with a really eerie feeling, that i might not be living in the same dimension with you folks. you see, there's a practice of code generation which extends back decades: lisp. code generations is a lisp programmer's bread and butter."
"In the lisp world, they call these macros. The idea is pretty widely known, though not too many languages implement them. Perl 6, and by extension the Parrot interpreter, will include macros, and they will thus be available to any language that gets implemented on top of Parrot (which currently includes Ruby, Python, (maybe) PHP, and, of course, Perl)."

The U.S. National Library of Medicine recently announced that 40 projects designed to improve access to electronic health information for the general public have been funded through the National Network of Libraries of Medicine. Projects, scattered among 24 states, range from disseminating information on rare disorders, to maintaining Web sites for specific groups, to ratcheting up existing healthcare information Web sites. For example, the Periodic Paralysis Association of Monrovia, Calif., plans to use its grant to develop a Web-based video library to enhance the diagnostic knowledge base for this class of rare neurological disorders. The Florida Gulfcoast North Area Health Education Center and two other partners will expand and support the Florida School Nurse Project, which will include training and access to health information for school nurses and related professionals. And the Mississippi Valley State University James Herbert White Library and partners from local Golden Age Club and Boys and Girls Club will establish a program to train youth and senior adults in locating and using electronic health information. All projects will last up to 18 months. (National Library of Medicine 23 Aug 2004)

Maryland Game Developer Vision
Videogames Receives NASA Space Act
Agreement To Develop Space Station Game
05/31/2004 01:55 PM
Vision Videogames of Towson, Maryland received a Space Act Agreement from The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) earlier this month to develop their PC/PS2/Xbox game, Space Station:SIM, due for consumer release this Christmas season. The Space Act Agreement is a continuation of one received by GRS Games before Vision Videogames management bought out the company in March 2004. It allows Vision Videogames a flow of information from, and access to, NASA personnel so the company can gather information to build their game. “The game has captured everyone’s imagination. We have individuals and international agencies including JAXA (The Japanese Space Agency) volunteering to help us with drawings, science, music – anything you can imagine,” says company president Bill Mueller. In Space Station:SIM, the player assumes the roll of the Chief Administrator of NASA, creating astronaut crewmembers with unique needs, abilities and personalities while managing their activities and personal relationships like “The SIMS®”. Scaled Composites, the X-Prize competitor funded by Microsoft mogul Paul Allen, and led by aviation uber-genius Burt Rutan, has scheduled a test flight that, if successful, will be the first space launch in history by the private sector.

SpaceShipOne will rocket to 100 kilometers (62 miles) into sub-orbital space above the Mojave Civilian Aerospace Test Center, a commercial airport in the California desert. If successful, it will demonstrate that the space frontier is finally open to private enterprise. This event could be the breakthrough that will enable space access for future generations.

This flight won't qualify for the X-Prize since the prize stipulates that you have to take 3 people to space, instead of just one. It is likely, however, a preliminary flight to get ready for a shot at the prize, and the precursor to commercial space travel. One of the reasons that the Mojave Airport is on its way to being licensed by the FTC as the world's first commercial spaceport. We have spaceports now! My jet-pack and flying car must not be far behind!

There's a teaser trailer out for the Hitchhikers Guide movie. It's unclear if the drooling should begin or if it's mere blasphemy. The teaser isn't enough to make me drool.
