Wikimedia
Foundation Announces Corporate Support of Wikipedia from Yahoo!
Search; Helps Allow the Organization to Run Wikipedia
Independently
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. & SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS
WIRE)--April 7, 2005--Wikimedia Foundation, a non-profit organization
that develops and maintains free open content for the public, and
Yahoo! Search, a leading global search engine, today announced that
Yahoo! Search will dedicate hardware and resources to support
Wikipedia, a community based encyclopedia written and edited by people
from around the world. The contribution is the most significant
dedication made to date to the Wikimedia Foundation by a corporate
sponsor and is essential to furthering their global growth.
In addition, Wikipedia content will become available to hundreds of
millions of users worldwide through Yahoo! Search via shortcuts that
are automatically displayed above the relevant search results
(http://tools.search.yahoo.com/shortcuts/). Yahoo! will begin making
Wikipedia content available via shortcuts in the U.S., select
European, Asian, and Latin American properties over the next several
weeks.
So Yahoo beat Google in the race to support
Wikipedia. Seems like Yahoo is running circles around Google these
days. Anyway, congrats to all involved. Sounds like an excellent
relationship.
UPDATE: It was pointed out to me that I should make it clear that
the "race" I was referring to was that Google had been widely rumored
to be in talks with Wikipedia for sponsorship. Yahoo beat them in the
race to close a deal with Wikipedia. Maybe it isn't a "race" but it's
interesting in light of Yahoo one-upping Google on a variety of fronts
these days.
UPDATE 2: Announcement on Wikimedia Foundation
page.

"Yahoo! Search's support and vast user base will provide critical
material aid and global reach for Wikipedia," said Jimmy Wales,
founder of Wikimedia Foundation. "Yahoo! has been Wikipedia's
longest-standing corporate supporter and with this dedication of
resources we will be able to offer Wikipedia content to a growing
worldwide audience, while maintaining full flexibility in our ability
to expand relationships and freely distribute our works."

03/19/2005 02:58 AMYahoo took a step back Friday and told ZDNet Australia a pledge by its
Australian division for full support of Firefox was "factually
inaccurate." According to a representative of the company, there are
"so many different products" on its network that it is likely there
are some products which would not work with the open-source browser.

Yahoo To Fully Support Not Fully
Supporting Firefox
03/19/2005 03:17 AMYahoo started to win some extra fans yesterday afternoon by
announcing they
were going to fully support Firefox on all their web offerings.
If true, this would be great, since an increasing number of hard core
internet users now rely almost exclusively on Firefox, and there's
nothing more annoying than websites and services that force you to go
back to IE. However, Yahoo quickly backtracked and claimed that
actually, when they said they would fully support Firefox they meant
they wouldn't fully support Firefox, though it's
a nice idea.

Despite the rumors that Google was going to play host to the
Wikipedia - it looks like Yahoo beat them to a deal to
integrate hooks into the Wikipedia - from Yahoo search.
Wouldn't it be cool is BOTH deals came through?

Yahoo on Personal Blog Entries
03/30/2005 01:16 AMIt was brought to my attention today that Yahoo is copyrighting the
RSS feeds for those that are setting up Yahoo 360 accounts. Some are
already refusing to use the service because in a sense Yahoo now owns
your content.
This may be a oversight on Yahoo's part and I hope it is, I will
probaly use their service anyway but probably not the blog portion and
give them some time to answer these issues. [Yahoo

no doubt. Check it out!
