Shopping for Don Park

Shopping for Don Park 02/01/2005 08:35 PM

I searched myself on Web's Biggest (via Ross Mayfield) and got this ad-sponsored search result:

Shop For Don Park Large Selection
MonsterMarketplace features over 2000 merchants. Compare prices on Don Park and save

Hmm.  Apparently I am on sale.  So I followed the link and got:

Dog Park at Amazon.com
Amazon.com/dvd
Save up to 35% on top sellers. Qualified orders over $25 ship free

Ergo, I am a dog park available for 35% off at Amazon.  I wonder if being a dog park is better than being a fire hydrant.

Don Park on the Google IPO

Don Park on the Google IPO 08/21/2004 03:48 AM

Don asks what's the big deal. His point of view is interesting.

It's very true that Google has failed to keep up with the "search engine optimization" tricks that cause links to porn sites to show up on our Referers pages and blog post comments. As we've said here several times, and thought many more, Google is the place where this practice should be stopped. It's because of Google that our sites are littered with links to these offensive sites that have nothing to do with ours. If they're smart enough to come up with tricks like Google News and Local Google, why can't their search engine recognize comment and referer spam and not use it in determining page rank? Of course they can. Why don't they? I'd love to hear an explanation. Better yet, I'd love to see them fix it. It's a bug in Google's software.

Maybe secretly Google really doesn't like blogs. Maybe it's not so secret. They still haven't deigned to support the standard format for syndication, as every other tech company and major publisher has. Why Google has a stake in breaking the standard is another puzzle. How does this relate to Don't Be Evil. We've asked this question a few times, only to be met with the usual Google stone wall.

This is not a public company but they have public stock now. And while they think they're real special, like Don Park, I'm not so sure they are. I made $800 on my Google stock yesterday, that paid for my hotel and gas and then some. But I'm paying for their deafness in other, imho more important ways. This is a company that desperately needs competition, and I hope they rise to it, instead of folding, as the previous Silicon Valley wunderkind (with the same backers) did.

Pliestocene Park?

Pliestocene Park? 09/09/2004 03:34 AM
Why no Pliestocene Park? "Everyone seems to assume that the primeval condition of the Great Plains was bison and prairie dog, with the occasional pronghorn herd, but no other large mammals. Yet for 1.65 million years, North America teemed with large animals: the 'pleistocene megafauna.' Then as the last ice age was ending and the first humans were coming over from Siberia, most of them died out." Sad -- doesn't everybody want a pony?

Open Park launches

Open Park launches 04/29/2004 09:11 AM
Open Park launch event
The Open Park Project is a non-profit working to establish free public WiFi connectivity on the National mall in Washington, DC. I'm one of the co-founders, along with Washington telecom lawyer Greg Staple and two others. On Wednesday, Open Park launched its Website and its first location, on Capitol Hill.

Hard to believe, but this is the first public outdoor WiFi hotspot in Washington, DC. The area around Supreme Court, the Capitol Visitor Center, and the Library of Congress is now "lit." Next stop: a wireless mesh from the Capitol to the Lincoln Memorial. Not just for free connectivity, but ultimately serving as a testbed for new wireless technologies and applications. We've received a generous hardware donation from Tropos Networks and plan to announce support from other companies and foundations soon.

I'm excited about this project both for the important symbolism and for the real practical benefits of a WiFi zone in the heart of the Nation's Capitol.

With all the talk on weird theme parks on Boing Boing lately, I thought readers might enjoy this New York Times article on a dinosaur theme park in Orlando that is run by creationists.Apparenly, it explains that dinosaurs were created on "the 6th day" and the Grand Canyon is evidence of Noah's ark. Amazing quote: "There are a lot of creationists that are really smart and debate the intellectuals, but the kids are bored after five minutes," said Mr. Hovind, who looks boyish at 51 and talks fast. "You're missing 98 percent of the population if you only go the intellectual route." Intellectual route?

Armageddon was a walk in the park... 09/07/2004 12:41 PM
Because spaceflight, in and of itself, is just way to easy. On 08 August 2001, NASA launched Genesis. It was a spacecraft that would spend 1125 days in space, including 884 days collecting 0.4 milligrams of solar particles. At that point, it would launch a 500 lbs return vehicle that would travel 600 mph back to earth. When it enters the atmosphere, at approximately 11:55am EST on Wednesday of this week, it will be going close to twenty-five thousand mph. Oddly enough, this is the easy part of the mission.

Because then, two minutes later, NASA is going to catch it. In mid-air. With a helicopter. Really.

The Gates in Central Park

The Gates in Central Park 03/14/2005 04:25 PM

I dragged my ass out of bed at 6:45 this morning so that I could be in Central Park when they unfurled The Gates, the 16-day public art project by Christo and Jeanne-Claude. I was not disappointed. The whole art question notwithstanding, The Gates are an amazing and moving spectacle, and it was great seeing so many people in the park this morning, sharing the experience. Here are some photos I took:

There's so much in the news these days about our differences, conflict, and fear...The Gates are a perfect antidote for all that and for New Yorkers, a chance to come together and celebrate the city without terrorism or a power loss being involved. If you're in New York anytime before February 27th, I urge you to head to Central Park to check it out.

A few readers have told me that WWdN is nominated for Best Big Name Blog in the 2004 Best of the Blogs awards, so I headed over there to see who else was nominated, and to perhaps correct the assertion that I'm a Big Name anything.

Holy crap, am I in some good company. Namely, Tony Pierce and Dooce.

So look, here's the thing: If you're going to go there and vote, you'd better vote for Tony. Right now he only has 13 votes, and that's because I can only vote once a day. I'm serious. This isn't some sort of false humility -- it's a fact. Tony Pierce writes one of the best (and more often than not THE best) blogs on the Internets. Go read his site if you doubt me. Tony is fearless, funny, and talented. And pick up his book How To Blog while you're there.

Barefoot in Central Park

Barefoot in Central Park 06/24/2005 05:13 PM

A really interesting article in today's New York Times, Kick Off Your Shoes and Run Awhile, discusses a developing trend: running barefoot.

During the past decade two barefoot-style training methods for runners have been developed based on the same principle: that legs, not shoes, are the best shock absorbers. That is, you land on your forefoot, instead of your heel, and paw back.

Many people now think that structured running shoes are leading to "lazy feet", that is feet that have under-developed muscles and are therefore more prone to injury. Running barefoot, or with new less structured shoes, may help strengthen feet and eventually lead to less injury. I'm curious about the claim, though not entirely convinced. The article says a lot of things that make sense to me.

Open Park and the Smithsonian

Open Park and the Smithsonian 06/05/2005 10:58 PM

The Washington Post is covering the story about the Smithsonian's refusal to allow Open Park, a non-profit I co-founded, provide free WiFi connectivity on the Mall in Washington DC. We were quite disappointed when the Smithsonian pulled an about-face and abruptly denied access to its rooftops. Open Park's proposal would cost the museum nothing, and would faciliate many of the Smithsonian's articulated goals.

Please show your support for Open Park -- call your Congressman!

Dan Rather: Park Avenue Ordinary 12/19/2004 03:15 PM
"Rather's sins were the sins of a celebrity journalist, a star, also known as a bigfoot, to whom no one in CBS could tell the truth until it was too late, and the network had been put on the wrong side of the story by Bigfoot's recklessness (plus his ignorance of the Web.)"
