IIS binds to all IP addresses

IIS binds to all IP addresses 07/22/2004 03:01 AM

In a comment on a late post yesterday, Scott Fraer points to a Microsoft article that explains: "When you start Internet Information Services (IIS) 6.0 on Microsoft Windows Server 2003, IIS binds to all IP addresses on the server, not just the IP addresses that are assigned to Web sites."

This, clearly, is the problem I'm encountering.

Now I'm running Windows 2000, and IIS 5.0, but the article says, midway down the page, that it has the same problem. A cure is suggested, but I have no idea how to implement.

So if you can illuminate, how do I get Win2K to let me use all the IP addresses on my machine? Any help would be much appreciated.

Force Companies To Give Free Tech
Support For Life

Force Companies To Give Free Tech
Support For Life
12/22/2003 12:42 PM
Last week we talked about one idea to improve computer security issues: threa ten to put executives of software companies in jail if their products are not secure. That seemed a bit extreme. This week, however, the Washington Post's Rob Pegoraro has another interesting idea to improve technology product quality: require companies to provide free tech support for life. This way, he argues, the companies will quickly learn about problems, and it will be in their own best interest to get working fixes out there as quickly as possible. It will also give them incentive to do things better the first time around. He argues this is beneficial to the companies as well, as with better products, people will be more willing to spend money on them. I would add one adjustment to this suggestion: make an exception for companies or individuals who give away software for free. This would make it so anyone shopping for software can get a real benefit for paying for a product, and also doesn't unfairly burden those who prefer to just give away software.

The smell of grass

The smell of grass 02/10/2004 01:34 PM

The most amazing thing about San Diego so far: the smell of grass. My nose had grown so accustomed to the scents of winter, that cold lifeless bitter slightly salty smell that's permeated New York City for the past three+ months. And then this morning, I stepped out of the hotel, ran down to a jogging path, and my nose was assaulted. Everywhere was the lushest, greenest grass, its scent permeating the air. A smell I take for granted in the summer suddenly seemed like a wondrous treat. Grass! Thick green grass! Who knew it could smell so beautiful?

Apparently after I last posted, the fan on the web server that hosts this site shuffled off its mortal coil, and headed for a higher fanly plane. And because of the timing of things, it took a long time for the replacement to settle into its new home. But now it's here, and I've certainly forgotten everything I intended to write. The more I think, "I need to write more posts!" the less I ever write. Perhaps now with the new humming fan, things will get back on track. Oh yeah, and A-Rod to the Yankees?! Argh!
