Why can't I pay attention anymore? Maybe I have ADT or NADD. Did we already discuss this? I can't remember. I need to be more mindful.

Attention to Detail 02/05/2005 09:12 PM

Had this not been a National Weather Service alert for an area currently drowning in rain, I might not have cared. But since I do care, this kind of cut-and-paste weather alert is ... beyond annoying.

A RIVER FLOOD WARNING REMAINS IS NO LONGER IN EFFECT FOR THE CO RIVER

I'm guessing since the last alert was "REMAINS" that "IS NO LONGER" is the new text. Guys, please, slow down a little?

Pay attention, people!

Pay attention, people! 12/19/2004 02:57 PM
The quote for the day (possibly week, month, and, maybe, year) courtesy of Sean Burke: Which leads us to one possible definition of camp: Camp is the real world made acceptable for people who have neither the wits nor the courage to understand it as it is. Hence, the drama of Moses is reduced to the panting, glossy superficiality of Cecil B. Demille's The Ten Commandments, and Hollywood's notorious treadmill of casting couches becomes Harlow's Carroll Baker as she whines, "Oh, Mama, all they want is my body!" --"Nice Girls Don't Wear Cha Cha Heels": Camp Lines from Classic...

Feedster Gets a Bit More Attention

I was just interviewed about Feedster by an Infoworld reporter.  Interesting.  Now I'm not praising this by any means but we've put less* marketing effort into Feedster than I have for any other product in my career.  That's a testimony to the power of blogs if I ever saw one.

*that could also be written as "no marketing effort at all".

Attention Oregonians

Attention Oregonians 07/01/2004 02:09 AM

A nice neigborhood cop pulled me over today to remind me that as of tonight at midnight, most Oregon school zones will be 20mph 24 hours a day. The cop mentioned that while he was just giving me a word of warning, after midnight he would start writing tickets for it.

The new law could be for child safety, but it could also be an easy excuse to write more tickets. A rule like that makes me think Oregon cities might be looking for new sources of revenue. Are there really that many kids getting hit by cars after midnight in school zones? Do a lot of kids hang out after midnight at schools of all places?

Semacode Gets More Attention

Semacode Gets More Attention 05/18/2004 03:04 PM
There's been a lot of buzz lately about Semacode, a new system to create barcode-like markers that can be inter preted by a camera phone photo to provide more information. The idea isn't particularly new. In fact, we've written about similar things a few times before. What is new is that this system is open - which may be both good and bad. There is still the "empty room" problem of getting such semacodes out there. A better way to launch such a product would be to build into the Semacode system a way to read regular product barcodes. Then, suddenly you have a pre-filled arena where Semacode software would be useful. If, on top of this, people could then create their own Semacodes it seems more likely to catch on. Still, once again, this is another example of why people trashing camera phones have missed the point. It's not about being a camera, but about how that camera is connected and that lets you do something different. You can't "get more info" about a product using a regular camera.

Unattractive children get less attention

Unattractive children get less attention 04/13/2005 11:51 AM
David Pescovitz: A new University of Alberta study posits that parents provide better care and more attention to "good-looking children." Social psychologist Andrew Harrell conducted the study by watching how parents monitor their children in supermarkets. Of course, the tricky (and, in my opinion, questionable) thing is judging a child's attractiveness to begin with. In this study, the researchers (not the parents) "graded each child on a scale of one to 10." From the press release:
Findings showed that 1.2 per cent of the least attractive children were buckled in, compared with 13.3 per cent of the most attractive youngsters. The observers also noticed the less attractive children were allowed to wander further away and more often from their parents. In total, there were 426 observations at the 14 supermarkets.

Harrell, who has been researching shopping cart safety since 1990 and has published a total of 13 articles on the topic, figures his latest results are based on a parent's instinctive Darwinian response: we're unconsciously more likely to lavish attention on attractive children simply because they're our best genetic material. basis of attractiveness.

eBooks Suddenly Getting More Attention

eBooks Suddenly Getting More Attention 07/20/2004 04:28 AM
Every few years there's a big fuss about the future of ebooks, and they never seem to get very far. Sure, a few early adopter types buy into the whole concept, but with clumsy readers, annoyin g digital rights management and a lack of content, they usually don't get very far. Here's yet another story, though, suggesting that, perhaps, the time has come for eBooks. The article quotes a study saying that eBooks are "the fastest growing segment of the publishing industry" which really isn't that impressive when you realize from what a small base they're starting, and considering that most of the publishing world is pretty well established. In absolute numbers, ebook sales are still a barely noticeable blip on the very distant outskirts of the radar.
