Piracy is Progressive Taxation
12/13/2002 02:18 PMFor all of these creative artists, most laboring in obscurity, being
well-enough known to be pirated would be a crowning achievement.
Piracy is a kind of progressive taxation, which may shave a few
percentage points off the sales of well-known artists (and I say "may"
because even that point is not proven), in exchange for massive
benefits to the far greater number for whom exposure may lead to
increased revenues.
Our current distribution systems for books, music, and movies are
skewed heavily in favor of the "haves" against the "have nots." A few
high-profile products receive the bulk of the promotional budget and
are distributed in large quantities; the majority depend, in the words
of Tennessee Williams' character Blanche DuBois, "on the kindness of
strangers."
Lowering the barriers to entry in distribution, and the continuous
availability of the entire catalog rather than just the most popular
works, is good for artists, since it gives them a chance to build
their own reputation and visibility, working with entrepreneurs of the
new medium who will be the publishers and distributors of tomorrow. --

Thoughts on a battleship: Cycle of
taxation
Thoughts on a battleship: Cycle of
taxation
04/09/2004 04:11 PMNorfolk's standard tourist gem is the Chrysler Museum with its
comprehensive collection of glass from ancient Greece and Rome through
Tiffany and into the modern era (mercifully there is only one piece by
Dale Chihuly). Karen, Robert, and I visited a newer downtown
attraction: the Wisconsin, an Iowa-class
battleship completed in 1944, mothballed in the mid-1990s, and
installed in Norfolk harbor in December 2000. The Iowa class are
the largest battleships ever built by the U.S. Navy. We strolled
among the 16-inch guns, festooned with photos of the shells, each of
which weighs as much as a Honda Civic, zooming off towards Iraqi
military targets during the 1991 Gulf War. It occurred to me
that the Wisconsin represents a stage in a cycle of taxation.
We tax ourselves to create a small government capable of taking
actions, some of which make foreigners angry. We then have to
tax ourselves even more so that our government can build battleships
that go forth and drop 2700-lb. shells on our new enemies. After
those enemies are all dead and/or cowed the surplus tax revenues are
used for more government activity, which angers new and different
foreigners. So we have to raise taxes again to build more weapon
systems to attack more foreigners. And the cycle
continues...
[Visitor info: There is no charge for visiting the Wisconsin
and the volunteer guides are very knowledgeable. You can't go
below decks, however, because the interior is preserved with
dehumidifiers. An oil-powered battleship doesn't figure into the
Navy's carrier-centric needs right now. However, the
Navy still owns the Wisconsin and may recommission it one day
if its capabilities are required.]

Robot Dog, One of, Field Use
01/07/2004 01:56 PMThe US Army TACOM group
is spending $2.25 million on research projects aimed at building robot
dogs that can carry a soldier's field equipment and keep up with the
soldier over any terrain. Right now, each man has to carry up to 100
pounds of ammunition, food, and equipment. The long term challenge is
making a four legged robot that can move as fast and quietly as a man
over any
terrain. The immediate challenge is making a four legged robot big
enough for the job that doesn't fall over and doesn't need an internal
combustion engine for power. For more, see Noah Shachtman's

The Search Field
The Search Field
07/01/2004 05:22 AMOne of the new features added to WebCore is an HTML wrapper for the
Cocoa NSSearchField, which means you will be able to use this control
in your Web pages and Dashboard widgets.
The syntax is:
<input type="search">
The incremental attribute can be used to control whether
or not the search is performed as you type.
The placeholder attribute can be used to set the greyed
placeholder text in the control.
The autosave attribute allows you to specify an autosave
name for your search results in the dropdown. What's cool about the
autosave is that it's global, which means that two Web sites could put
up a search field with an autosave name of google and then they
would share the search results. (Since the actual result values are
not accessible to the page there is no privacy violation.)
The results attribute allows you to specify how many
results should be displayed in the dropdown.
The search DOM event fires at the precise time the search
should be performed and obeys the heuristic for the control, so you
don't have to trap key and click events at all. You can use the
onsearch attribute on the control to respond when the search
happens.
When submitted, the search control will save the submitted result,
so that the user can select it from the dropdown when returning to the
page.
In addition the search control is a subclass of NSTextField and
also supports all of the functionality of the text input element, so
you can make it readonly, set a maxlength, etc.
The search control will also even degrade gracefully in other
browsers, since they won't recognize the unknown type and so will just
use a text field instead.
If you have the 1.3 preview for Panther or are playing with Tiger,
you can try this feature out. It works in both.
