P2P Against Child Porn
P2P Against Child Porn
05/06/2004 01:32 AMLast year, when other attacks against peer-to-peer file sharing
systems weren't working, the entertainment industry pulled out the
"porn" card, saying that the file sharing networks were chock full of
child porn and it was a danger to anyone using it. Of course, you
could say the same thing about the internet, but all the hype even
convinced
Senator
Hatch to push legislation against P2P networks due to all that
porn. Realizing that they had something of a PR problem on this
issue, it appears the various P2P networks decided to team up and do
something to show how they're
actually
helping to catch child pornographers. They've been working with
the FBI to help them track down those responsible for child porn, and
are now looking at setting up a system to let users flag child porn so
that the networks (and the FBI) can track it down (though, you wonder
how quickly that flag will be abused: don't like a song? call it
child porn). Finally, in a move that's much more about the good
publicity it can generate than actually catching pornographers,
they're going to start posting pictures from the FBI's most wanted
list of child pornographers on their websites.

BT To Block Child Porn - But Who Makes
The List?
BT To Block Child Porn - But Who Makes
The List?
06/07/2004 02:39 AMLots of folks are talking about the decision by BT to
b
lock access to child porn and how this is the "first mass
censorship of the web attempted in a Western democracy." Actually,
that's not true at all. Pennsylvania has been
forcing
ISPs to do this for years. While most of the Guardian article
above focuses on how it's now technically feasible to do so, it
doesn't really get into the reasons why this is problematic. First,
it's unclear who gets to make up the list, and how they decide what's
"bad" and what's acceptable. The article mentions a list, but it's
not clear that's the list that BT will use - or if there's any kind of
appeal procedure for sites that have been unfairly blocked. It's also
not clear if (as in Pennsylvania) blocking a site that's on a shared
server will mean every other site on that server will also get
blocked. The article talks up how this was an idea by NCH, the
children's charity who has a habit of putting out
very
biased and
very
misleading studies trying to blame child porn on everyone but the
people actually creating and hosting the child porn. This is yet
another effort by them to try to hide away the problem, rather than
dealing with its root causes.
