Theory Development for Organizational Platform of User Collaboration Innovation Community by Jen-Fang Lee and Chan Tzu-Ying
http://opensource .mit.edu/papers/leechan2.pdf

Abstract:
This study proposes the concept of the “User Collaboration Innovation Community”, tries to understand this new phenomenon by conducting projects where the opening of source software is the subject of this analysis, borrows the observation variables and propositions adopted by Mintzberg on structures of the innovative organization, and summarizes the opinions of scholars of organizational economics, the relationship between property rights and organization performance. This study further infers a series of conceptual framework and propositions on the relationships among “organization structure, property right, and organization innovation” for “the organizational platform of the user collaboration innovation community”. We expect that the construction of this concept framework will function as a concrete description and presentation of the innovation model of the User Collaboration Innovation Community and will serve as a clear path to be followed for continuous research in th
e future.

Alvarion Releases "WiMax" Platform

Alvarion Releases "WiMax" Platform 06/02/2004 12:03 PM
Alvarion artfully crafts its BreezeMax press release to use the term WiMax without precisely saying what that means: There's no such thing as WiMax gear yet, but Alvarion wants you to accept that they're releasing the closest thing to it. There's no certification standard and no trademark program from the WiMax Forum, and that might be allowing a little market confusion to creep in. Look at the hedges in the press release: Based on the IEEE 802.16/ETSI HiperMAN standards and WiMAX Forum profiles -- that's profiles, not standards. With prominent roles in the WiMAX ForumTM...The BreezeMAX platform is designed to support WiMAX certified CPEs, which will incorporate the Intel WiMAX chip set as they become available in the market...these are "products that provide a path for operators to WiMAX standardisation"... All in all, perhaps they should have said more clearly: We're not selling WiMax equipment, but something we believe we be so close to it that only firmware upgrades are required. Interestingly, while they say futureproofed on one page, they don't mention whether purchasers would receive free hardware upgrades if the WiMax standard as deployed is too different to allow firmware changes to this equipment. Finally, while the equipment will ship in the 2004 third quarter, BreezeMax 3500 works in the 3.5 GHz band, which is only available in Europe and the Asia Pacific. Daily Wireless has more details about the equipment. Bandwidth and throughput aren't mentioned....

The Internet Is A Communications
Platform, Not A Content Platform

The Internet Is A Communications
Platform, Not A Content Platform
03/19/2005 03:17 AM
It seems that any time you hear someone saying they're trying to reach the "middle ground" on an argument, you might want to suspect their motives. That was the case a few months ago when some think tank wanted to reach a middle ground on file sharing, which was really a thinly veiled explanation for why the entertainment industry should control the internet. We've now got another one, which is even scarier. TheRegister has published an excerpt from a paper supposedly about "media literacy" which claims its looking for a " middle ground" between "etopians" who want the internet to remain open and the regulate and control crowd who want to ban and filter everything. However, the conclusions are anything but a middle ground. They're saying that people are stupid and can't handle the internet as is, and that there should be a separate internet that is more like TV, with acceptable providers handling the content, and acting as the guides to all the content out there. This is mischaracterizing the debate. It's not a middle ground at all, but a fairly radical solution. There's already a TV out there. This is designed from the wrong mindset. The internet is not a content platform, but a communications one. This article flips that around and assumes that it's a content platform -- for the sake of the content providers.
