Wireless USB 1.0 spec to be finalized
next month
04/11/2005 10:22 AMVersion 1.0 of the Wireless USB (Universal Serial Bus) specification,
which is being promoted as the successor to the USB data transfer
method between electronics devices, should be approved by mid-May,
Intel (Profile, Products, Articles) said last week. The Wireless USB
specification is for 480Mbps transfer speed over distances of about
three meters and it will work at lower speeds up to a distance of
about 10 meters.
A candidate Version 1.0 specification was sent to the Wireless USB
Promoter Group on April 1 for a 45 day review, said Jeff Ravencraft,
technology strategist for Intel's Communications Technology Lab, at a
press event during the Intel Developer Forum (IDF) Japan 2005, on
Friday. "The new news is...we'll have the specification finalized
on or about May 15," he said.

" 'Think of AllMiMedia as home networking on steroids,' said Dr.
Luc Julia, BravoBrava's co-founder and vice president of research and
development. 'With AllMiMedia, you have a personal network that is
always with you, giving you access and control over your digital
content, whether you're at home or on the other side of the
country.'
AllMiMedia allows a person's digital content -- including photos,
music, Microsoft® Media Center-stored content, live television
channels and Internet TV and radio -- to be remotely accessed and
controlled through a web-enabled cell phone or PDA. 'With AllMiMedia,
a person could remotely program his TiVo® to record 'The West
Wing' and play it back later, or even watch it live from his cell
phone,' said Julia...." [via Daily Palm]
There's a TiVo Edition of the software and a Windows XP Media
Center Edition, described below:
"This $12/year service allows existing Windows® XP
Media Center Edition 2004 users to remotely program video
recording with a wireless device such as their web-enabled cell
phone or PDA. For an optional $20/year, it also allows
users to view photos remotely and to listen to their
music stored on their Windows® XP Media Center Edition PC
as well as accessing information such as weather and stocks. Check if your cell phone is AllMiMedia compliant
now!"
I am happy to report that the Treo 600 is compliant, but I don't
have Windows XP Media Center. It's the "listen to their music stored"
on their PC that piques my interest, but not enough to go with Media
Center.

insecure
Adventures in wireless security: Why
home and corporate wireless LANs are
insecure
06/03/2004 03:44 AMThe meat of the article is:
“…Wireless security recommendations: Change your system
defaults – everyone knows them.
Change the Admin and SNMP passwords. Change the IP network range. Also
change the Server Set ID (SSID). The SSID is a unique identifier for
your wireless hub/router. The default SSID is set in the factory is
definitely not unique.
Don’t broadcast the SSID. While you can change the default ID,
that does little if your hub or router broadcasts that SSID.
Enable Wireless Encryption. WEP or something similar can be
compromised, but it makes it significantly more difficult to
compromise your information. The larger the key length, the better.
Enable Shared Key Authentication. The default Open System setting lets
anyone connect to your network with very minimal effort.
Change your SNMP Community String. Create a Community String like it
is a strong password.
Enable MAC Address Codes. Again, this makes it more difficult for a
hacker to compromise your home network.
Set Wireless LAN cards to Infrastructure Mode. Most cards have the
default Ad Hoc mode, which is less secure.
Don’t rely only on the broadband firewall. A firewall at your
home’s Internet entry point is critical. However, you should
still have personal firewalls on all computers on your network, in
case something makes it through your home’s firewall or a hacker
does make it onto your network.”
