Nokia is
launching this pretty new phone, the 8801, to be available in markets
by the third quarter. The metal and reinforced glass handset has
decent, but not groundbreaking technical features, including Bluetooth
and an MP3/AAC music player (it's pretty much the typical Nokia
spread). The phone will also been known as the 8801 is some
markets—none of which are known as the US.

Update: Oh, we're not screwed afterall. Looks like a version of
the 8801 will be tri-band of a North American variety. (Thanks,
David!))

Nokia's new 8800 is set for launch later this year, and features
sexxay sillhouette and hip, prefab ringtones composed by
Ryuichi Sakamoto. The phone's
thin, stainless steel profile slides open to reveal an elegantly
designed control interface. Me want.

Okay, so Nokia just dropped three phones onto us,
and they're pretty crazy, and by 'crazy' I mean 'sort of ugly.' I have
to cop to sort of liking the Tron-style and the asymetrical design -
the one round corner, one square corner 'new Nokia' look - but I have
a feeling I'll be in the minority. Would it kill them to just release
a nice, silver phone that you could take home to mom?
Anyway, here's the breakdown, and I'll probably go after this post
in a couple of waves. The one pictured here is the Nokia 7280, which
you might notice doesn't have a keypad. That's because Nokia designed
it to be "sleek," "sexy," and "edgy." (I'm not joking.)

And last but not least (if you're reading from the
bottom up; otherwise, welcome to the Nokia posts!) are these two new
peripherals from Nokia, a new Nokia Wireless Headset HS-11W headset
with a 6 hour talk time, and this Nokia Wireless GPS Module LD-1W that
also connects to your phone or PDA via Bluetooth (the GPS may not
actually be new - it seems sort of familiar - but I don't exactly
recall hearing about it before). The GPS unit uses the same battery
and charge plug as most Nokia phones, so you can use your existing
charge to go along with it.
The headset should be out later this year, while the GPS unit isn't
scheduled until Q1 2005.

Nokia announced their 1600 and 1110
models, meant to be affordable, easy-to-use and light on frills. Nokia
is targeting developing nations with these models and they look well
enough to suit their purpose as part of a plan to eventually offer
mobile service for just $5 a month. They both feature talk times of
over 5 hours and the Nokia 1600 has a 65k color screen while the Nokia
1110 uses a sunlight-friendly inverted black and white display.
They're expected to retail for $105 and $85, respectively, and will be
available later this year.

Nokia 770 Disappoints
Nokia 770 Disappoints
06/17/2005 03:19 PMI wrote a story about my brief experience playing around with the
Wi-Fi enabled Nokia 770 tablet: I've been in Helsinki the past couple
of days at Nokia's annual journalist schmooze-fest. Surprisingly
though, there's been quite a bit of news coming out of the event.
Also, they had a demo room that included some early versions of the
Nokia 770 Internet tablet. I'm not totally sure (the PR person I asked
couldn't say for sure) but I think this is the first time that Nokia
has offered a peak at the actual device. When it was launched, I think
all the coverage came from paper. Anyway, I tried to be level in this
review but generally I was pretty disappointed. Everything about it
was agonizingly slow. I have no idea if that is because these are
early versions or if this is how the final products will be. I got
basically typical answers from spokespeople about how it will improve
but no evidence about why or specific changes that were being made to
make the experience better. There was plenty of discussion among my
fellow journalists here about the slowness. It's hard to get past that
aspect because it made the whole experience so not pleasant. In
addition to slow response time, downloading Web pages was also quite
slow. The 770 comes with built-in Wi-Fi so should have been fast but
it was a lot like using 3G on a cell phone or PDA. That of course
could have been due to an overloaded network at the conference center.
Or it could be related to overall slow processing speeds on the
device. I think the best prospects for the Nokia 770 come from the
broadband operators and future versions of the device. They could sell
or package it to end users. Next year's software is expected to enable
voice over IP and instant messaging, two applications that could make
the 770 more attractive to users....

Nokia and Podcasting!
Nokia and Podcasting!
06/06/2005 12:01 AMI have it on good authority that Nokia is taking a real hard look
at podcasting. Being they are the world leader in mobile phones this
is a smart move. As far as I can tell, non of them are running
Microsoft software in them. I think this is another development that
should cause Microsoft to catch up to the train because it is already
out of the yard!
Lets see Apple with Podcasting Support in iTunes, Nokia with
possible native podcast support built in and storage to boot. Very
interesting indeed.

Nokia 6630
12/31/2004 10:59 AMOn Malik likes
his. I wonder if I can trade out my 7610 for a 6630? Charlie?
Here's
Om's post....
It is hard for me to imagine that I am carrying around in my
pocket a computer that is as powerful as my first generation Pentium
powered AST desktop, I wrestled with back in 1995, typing out
scintiallting stories about memory chip prices for Quick Nikkei News.
It seemed breezy enough, running the now forgotten Windows 3.1. With
some kicking around, the TCP/IP stack on it worked for me to get
Internet access as well. Fast forward by ten years, and the new Nokia 6630
packs a mightier punch - a 200 MHz ARM 5 processor - in a small
but lethal package.
The Nokia 6630 is based
on Symbian OS. It is a tri-band phone for GSM 900/1800/1900, EDGE and
WCDMA networks. Weighing 127 grams and measuring 110 x 60 x 20.6 mm,
it is world’s smallest megapixel phone for GSM and WCDMA networks.
It has everything you would normally want in a good smart-enough
phone. Clearly, this is the best 3G phone on the market, especially
given that how the others are so clunky and well ugly! It is light
enough that sometimes I forget it is sitting in my pocket.
