Despite Various Lawsuits, ICANN Approves
VeriSign's Wait List Service

Despite Various Lawsuits, ICANN Approves
VeriSign's Wait List Service
03/08/2004 11:04 PM
I imagine that this is not the last we are going to hear on this topic. Despite lawsuits from VeriSig n and a group of domain registrars over this very issue, ICANN has moved forward and approved VeriSign's plans for a "wait-listing" service. The service is designed so that people can basically put in bids for domain names before they even expired, thus creating a master list. One potential benefit (or problem, depending on your point of view) is that it could act as insurance against companies who forget to renew their own domain. The smaller registrars claim this will harm their own business in selling expired domain names - which is likely to be true. However, not all actions that harm other companies' ability to make money are illegal. In many areas, that's just business. The real question, from a legal standpoint, is whether or not this goes beyond VeriSign's granted rights, and is basically allowing them to leverage their (legal) monopoly position into other areas. That's something for the courts to decide, but I'm sure many will find the timing of ICANN's approval (so soon after being sued by everyone) questionable.

.md Domains

.md Domains 09/01/2004 12:08 PM

,m d — The Healthcare Domain: Lucky is the country that has a TLD with some inherent value. This new TLD comes to us coutesy of Moldova.

.md is the web address that identifies you, your company or your organization with the healthcare industry. Thousands of professionals and companies in the healthcare industry are already utilizing .md for their branding and marketing efforts, including some of the world's largest pharmaceutical companies.

Not quite the coup that Tuvalu managed to pull off, but not bad. (Interesting side note: read about the economy (or lack thereof) in Tuvalu, and you'll see why their TLD is a very big deal to them. They have little else to bank on economically.)

AdSense for Domains

AdSense for Domains 06/05/2005 11:47 PM

Google AdSense for domains: Domain squatters, your AdSense program has arrived. Apparently it keys off the domain name itself, since there's nothing else on the page.

AdSense for domains allows domain name registrars and large domain name holders to unlock the value in their parked page inventory. AdSense for domains delivers targeted, conceptually related keywords and advertisements to parked domain name pages by using Google's semantic technology to "understand" the meaning of each domain name.
