The U.S. government will not get a head start on other Windows users when it comes to Microsoft (Quote, Chart) security updates, the company said Friday in response to news report that suggested otherwise. The Wall Street Journal reported that the U.S. Air Force will receive early versions of software patches through Microsoft's Update Validation Program (SUVP) and those fixes will be forwarded to other agencies through the Department of Homeland Security. But according to Microsoft, officials from the Redmond, Wash., software giant and the Air Force have met in recent weeks with officials from the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) and the DHS to discuss the best practices established by the Air Force after a recent five-year $500-million deal inked in November.

Korea: Xbox Sales Numbers Disappoint
Microsoft
12/23/2003 01:01 PM
Slow sales of Microsoft's console and a strong rival in Sony point to tough times for the Xbox in Korea. Xbox has been in the Korean market for over a year and was targeted to sell 150,000 units during that period. Unfortunately for Microsoft, only 60,000 consoles have been sold to date due to lackluster demand by Korean gamers.

Sony Ordered to Stop PlayStation Sales &

Sony was told to stop sales of it’s PlayStation console as a judge upheld a jury ruling in California in 2004 that Sony used Immersion’s vibrating controller technology in their PlayStations. According to a company representative, Sony will still be able to sell the game consoles while it attempts to appeal the ruling. The company will also start paying Immersion royalties as ordered.

While on the subject of legal rulings, on Tuesday Grokster and Streamcast will be in front of the US Supreme Court to argue their case. Both file-sharing companies contend that P2P networks can be used to share legal content and they cannot control, and thus are not liable for, any piracy going on. According to BetanewsThe entertainment industry, which will be represented in court by MGM Studios, disagrees with such claims. Hollywood and the RIAA say that P2P companies such as Grokster and StreamCast are no different from the old Napster, and have built their business by encouraging users to share illicit content. A federal appeals court sided with the file sharing networks last August, stating that Grokster and StreamCast's Morpheus had legitimate uses, even if the majority of users are trading illegal content. But the industry refused to give up, and the case will be decided by the nation's top court.

In a real twist, Mark Cuban decided to put his money where his mouth is and financially back Grokster in it’s legal fight against MGM. Check out his blog here.

Clash of the titans: Amazon vs. Google 10/28/2003 11:06 PM
< img width="278" height="194" alt="knowledge navigator" align="right" vspace="6" hspace="6" src="http://weblog.infoworld.com/udell/gems/amazonSearchInside.jpg"/>< /a> Ned Batchelder alerted me this morning to Amazon's new search feature:
Now Amazon lets you search the full text of its books. This is astounding, not only because of the further differences it highlights between Amazon and traditional bookstores, but because of the effort it must have taken to accomplish. The text seems to be from scans of pages, subjected to an OCR process. And not just the bulk of popular books, either. They've got all sorts of wild and wooly volumes available this way. I don't know how truly useful it will be, since full text searching can be extremely noisy, even before the OCR noise is factored in. [ Ned Batchelder: October 2003]
I wondered about the OCR strategy too. In this day and age, surely any publisher could provide electronic copy to an indexer. But then I drilled down and discovered something quite remarkable. I own a copy of Tesla: Man Out of Time. The other day, I was mentioning to someone that, according to that book, some of Nikola Tesla's writings are still classified. This query finds the passage I was remembering. Awesome! Now the physical book I bought from Amazon is more valuable to me. Its printed index has been augmented by a vastly more capable online index. This extremely useful capability is, by the way, also available to owners of books in the Safari Books Online service, though it correlates results only to chapter and section, not to page. Little-known fact: you need not be a Safari subscriber to use Safari as an augmented index to books you own. ...

Immersion Corporation was awarded $82.0 million in past damages, along with pre-judgment interest in the amount of $8.7 million by the court for the technology Sony used that makes a game controller vibrate in sync with actions in games.
