Cory Doctorow: Senate Majority Leader and noted jackass Bill Frist is an MD, and he says that he can tell by looking at the Schiavo videos that she's not in a persistent vegetative state. His awesome diagnostic powers demand to be tested, and the interweb provides the perfect means to discover their scope:
Take a digital picture or video of your medical problem – tennis elbow, acne, runny nose, hemorrhoids, or whatever ails you - and send it to the doctor in charge of the US Senate and your health care.

Everyone, take two minutes and upload your photos to Flickr.com. "Tag" the photo "Frist." If we get critical mass, we'll send everyone's photos to Dean Rosen, the good doctor's Health Care policy director!

JVC's Mystery Hard Drive Camcorders
Revealed: They're Hard Drive Camcorders
09/14/2004 11:18 AM

jvc_hdd_cams.jpg imageOops, I almost forgot about these new cameras announced from JVC - the ones they've been hyping up to no end as their big "mystery product." Basically, they're camcorders with hard drives in them - a 4GB microdrive, to be exact. They look pretty cool and everything, but they're really most interesting because they are the first consumer camcorder with a built-in hard drive, not because they do anything particularly unique. That being said, I fully support this idea, and think most consumer recording technology should move to hard drives as soon as possible (I'll be waiting until you can get something with a bigger hard drive than 4GB for less than $1,500, though).

Both models (the GZ-MC100 and the GZ-MC200) can record up to 9Mbps in MPEG2, though, which is DVD quality.

David "SD8957" Chait has a less cynical take on the new camcorders, along with more stats and pictures.

Wi-Fi and Cancer

Wi-Fi and Cancer 12/12/2003 03:12 PM
This balanced and thoughtful article takes a look at the Illinois lawsuit urging a public school district to shut down its WLANs: The article points out that it's tough to decide right now if Wi-Fi might cause adverse health affects given that research has been done with opposing results and because people haven't been exposed to cellular or Wi-Fi radiation long enough to make a definitive conclusion. I happen to be working on a story about the Illinois lawsuit and just heard from the lawyer representing the parents who have filed suit against the school district and he said that the parties are in settlement discussions. He couldn't offer any details, of course. I'd like to speculate on what agreement the parties might make but it's hard to imagine. The school might bend and remove the network in an effort to avoid a costly lawsuit. Otherwise, I can't imagine a way that the school could offer the network and offer a way for students to avoid it while receiving the same education as their peers. We shall see....
