Who do you miss?

Who do you miss? 06/02/2004 03:23 PM
Harrison became president in 1841. He was in Washington on March 4, 1841. He was 67 years old when he was president. Harrison died in April 4, 1841. He died in office. That was William Henry Harrison. I miss William Henry Harrison. He would make a good President or delegate today. I think he should be on all dollars.

We're going to miss you Helmut

We're going to miss you Helmut 01/24/2004 03:32 AM

Helmut Newton, Who Remade Fashion Photography, Dies at 83 - NYT

I first met Helmut and his wife at Timothy Leary's house. Tim and Helmut were good friends. (I guess that would mean that Tim would be 83 if he were alive now...) They were the same age and even wore the same tennis shoes. I remember Helmut and as a funny and really cool guy.

When I was working on Indian Runner, we asked him to do some of the photography for the movie and I remember hanging out with him in Omaha, Nebraska where we were shooting the film. I remember helping him find "corn-fed beauties of the Midwest" during his free time. He had this amazing talent for making women feel beautiful and capturing this on film.

I had always loved landscape photography since I was a child, but Helmut was the one who got me interested in portraits and helped me appreciate the amazing talent required to take portraits.

I'm going to miss you Helmut. Say hi to Tim for me if you see him.

Miss Deja Vu

Miss Deja Vu 06/30/2004 06:09 PM
Here She Is, Miss Deja Vu (and Miss Illinois) Michelle LaGroue, 2004. Also Miss Illinois in 2002 (she was First Runner Up and assumed the crown when Erika Harold won Miss America). I know nothing of the world of pageants, but this seems way bigger than that whole 'president of beers' thing. Is Rachna Khatau mad about comming in First Runner Up? "No way. I've had a smile on my face the past two days." BTW, the most notable former Miss Illinois lately is Jeri Lynn Zimmerman, 1989, but now better known as Jeri Ryan. Yup, that Jeri Ryan.

Christma s Wrapping is one of the most enduring (and arguably one of the hippest) Christmas songs of the past twenty years. Though a quintessential keyboard-and-sax driven New Wave tune, the endearing singleton's account of the year in dating on Christmas Eve tops the Christmas charts every year, and has survived reinterpretations by the Spice Girls and Save Ferris. This year, the eclectically-talented Chris Butler reflects on its inception.

Miss Otis Regrets

Miss Otis Regrets 04/09/2004 03:58 PM
When you are young and stupid, you can be excused for a lot of things. One of the most popular articles on this site is 7 Reasons Why PHP is Better than ASP. The truth is that I cringe everytime i see someone linking to this in my referer logs.

I wrote this several years ago in my early enthusiasm for PHP. I now believe that neither PHP nor ASP are better. They are just choices. Some say to-may-to, others say to-mah-to.

Here's another weird article comparing PHP and ASP.NET. This time I didn't write it (luckily!) In the review, ASP.NET gets a "weak" for speed and efficiency. Huh? Where are the benchmarks? A careful reading also reveals that the author doesn't even understand how .NET works. And if IIS is a liability, so is Apache 2.0. Sloppy, sloppy, sloppy.

tri: As i write this at home, American Idol is playing on TV on Star World. I'm definitely writing under the influence of Simon Crowell.
