A bushy-tailed morning in the quest for truth : MemeTank and dKosopedia This morning, I wondered - where's the update to (the deceased) Steve Kangas' mighty liberal FAQ ? "Update?", thought I, "Well, this attempt ran out of steam" Then..."Ah, a Wiki !" Then, "well, isn't truth the point ?...shouldn't it be Bipartisan, or multipartisan ?" Daily Kos was just sniffing (May 28th) along that trail, it seemed....partway : "We hope the dKosopedia will become the progressive-political version of the Wikipedia, a political FAQ so to speak" Would the "Dkosopedia" benefit from a less partisan stance ?

But, the MemeTank rocks -with it's bestiary of Liberal/Progressive, Right Wing, and "other" memes and the (MemeTank's) "Meme Development Project....This section is for people who want to invent new memes and try to encourage professional journalists to start using them."

Commentary: Like many readers, I find Microsoft's Get the Facts (GtF) ads repugnant, especially when they appear on sites dedicated to Linux and open source software. I understand that such organizations' editorial and ad sales staffs operate independently, meaning neither side tells the other what content it is or isn't allowed to carry, but I still don't like it. Happily, however, the bogus GtF ads may not be around much longer.

Answering a Very Important Call

Answering a Very Important Call 04/09/2004 05:14 PM
It's been a few hours beyond 365 days since I last hosted Call for Help on TechTV. That streak is about to be broken. I've been invited to "fill in the blank" for a couple of non-live shows on Monday; these recordings will air on Wednesday and Thursday. My schedule was clear, my mind was ready, and my heart is willing. There has been much speculation as to what happened to me - even though most Gnomies know that I've been here all along, long before the first ZDTV broadcast. I don't know if I'll be asked to help them again in the future, but I'll welcome this opportunity (and any others) with open arms. Take it for what it is: another chance to say 'hello' to millions of old friends. No doubt, this bit of news will shock a few faithful viewers, but I'm doing what I can do to ensure that the show (proverbially) goes on until Leo can return. I promise to cut my coffee consumption in half that morning, just to be on the safe side. Not nervous, just very excited - overjoyed, actually. If you can tune in, please do. If you can send feedback, it's most welcome. I'll probably photoblog my fingers off, since I won't be staying in SF for much longer than a day. I hate saying this because it sounds incredibly trite, but this is a dream come true. Yes, I've had nocturnal visions about returning to the set I once called 'home base.' Just for grins, I'll be active in the official CFH chat room when the episodes are first run - a luxury one host can afford when everything's produced to tape. Perhaps we'll be able to break a few records before all is said and done? They don't really make LPs anymore. I wonder if busting a cassette tape is just as good? Regardless, a fun time is set to be had by all involved. From director to production assistant, it takes a lot of hands to make one hour come off without a hitch. To some, I'll be a new face. To others, old hat. To everybody else, the same little guy who fell off a 14' camper when he was in the seventh grade. True story, and I've got the slightly-curved spine to prove it. I'd tell you more about that, but... I've got an overnight bag to pack. FYI, I'll be on David's show to talk about this whole thing in a few hours....

Just last month we had a story about all that mobile phone induced anger, and it should be noted that police are not immune to such things. The Associated Press is reporting that a woman who answered a phone call from her mother during the opening credits of a movie was confronted by an off-duty cop who pulled her and her boyfriend out into the lobby and maced them, followed up with a charge of disorderly conduct. The police claim the story happened a bit differently, so choose who you want to believe. Either way, it's yet another story of mobile phone induced anger getting a bit out of hand.

http://www.brainboost.com/

BrainBoost is a Question Answering search engine. It was specifically designed to answer questions, asked in plain English. BrainBoost is 100% automated. Unlike other Question Answering engines, BrainBoost does not rely on human editors to locate answers. Instead, BrainBoost employs cutting-edge Artificial Intelligence technology to understand your question and match it with relevant answers it locates on the web. BrainBoost outputs actual sentences extracted from web pages. The BrainBoost engine determines that these sentences are potential answers to the original question. This has been added to Deep Web Research Subject Tracer Information Blog. This will be added to the search engines section of all Internet MiniGuides 2004-05.

The amazing interstingness of miscellany, specifically Schott's Food and Drink Miscellany has provided me with several hours of pre-sleep delight as I've perused its pages in bed. Last night I discovered that both the loganberry and the boysenberry are not in fact wild berries, but derivatives of raspberries! Beneath the heading, "Epicurean Eponyms," Mr. Schott explains: LOGANBERRY · the sweet purple berry of the raspberry plant Rubus loganobaccus · created by the American judge and experimental horticulturalist James Harvey Logan, who developed the plant (c.1881). Some forty years later the botanist Rudolph Boysen created the hybrid BOYSENBERRY from the loganberry, the raspberry, and the blackberry. No wonder I've never seen a loganberry bush in the wild! I'm loving this little book and all its wonders. Highly recommended for any foodie or food-curious person.

Are you deleting your cookies?

Are you deleting your cookies? 04/08/2005 06:36 PM

Apparently most people are pretty sick of cookies and 58% of people are deleting them almost as fast as websites try to force them on you. Seems Marketers have responded and are using other ways to track what people are doing through. Persistent Identification Element (PIE)that uses a technology that is tied to Macromedia's Flash MX, which is able to track your every move. Here is how to disable their dirty little trick. FeedDemon, RSS and cookies

FeedDemon, RSS and cookies 08/18/2004 10:25 AM

I've recently had a a few people ask whether FeedDemon supports the use of cookies, and the answer is, "yes, it does."

The most obvious use of this is to require a login before returning any information, and I've seen this done by several feeds already. Unfortunately, some of them redirect to an HTML page when the login cookie isn't found, which obviously won't work since FeedDemon is trying to download RSS, not HTML. So, if you use cookie-based authentication, don't redirect to an HTML page - instead, dynamically create an RSS <item> which includes a link to the login page.

Undeleting Cookies Or Just Spyware?

Undeleting Cookies Or Just Spyware? 04/05/2005 07:23 PM
Cookie technology is often misunderstood. It is quite useful, and it's unlikely to be misused widely. In fact, even the various tracking cookies that some spyware programs highlight aren't really that bad. Still, if you want to delete your cookies, you should certainly be allowed to do so. However, just as reports are coming out claiming that an awful lot of people are deleting their cookies regularly, some company has come up with a technology that secretly restores deleted cookies on the theory that users are too stupid to understand cookies and that they probably didn't want them deleted in the first place. Beyond being obnoxious, this certainly sounds like it could be illegal. As Mitch Wagner explains in the article linked above: "So let's review, shall we? PIE inserts itself on machines without the user's permission. (spyware) It tracks the user's behavior without the user's permission. (spyware) It reports that information back to the licensee of the software. (spyware) And it blocks users' attempts to disable tracking. (spyware) If only there was a (spyware) word to describe software that behaves in that fashion." We can hope this is just an April Fool's joke gone wrong, but it sounds like the company might just be serious.
