Samsung Shows Off 2Gb DDR2 DRAMs

Samsung Shows Off 2Gb DDR2 DRAMs 09/21/2004 06:41 AM
Samsung Electronics announced the industry’s first 2Gb DDR2 SDRAM utilizing 80nm process technology. The high density DDR2 solution will enhance server and workstation performance and enable faster deployment of memory intensive applications like real time video conference, remote medical service, two-way communications, and 3-D graphics. “Samsung developed the DDR2 SDRAM using an advanced 80nm process technology, overcoming the industry expectations that 2Gb DRAM manufacture would require sub 65nm circuitry,” Samsung said in the statement.

The new DRAM technology breakthroughs include a 3D transistor technology, recess channel array transistor (RCAT), and a new concept architecture process. First introduced 2003, RCAT is a technology unique to Samsung that reduces transistor area space by implementing a 3-D structural design, increasing the integration level for higher density on a given area. To address the high performance features of the DDR2 specification, Samsung adopted a double poly gate technology, 20-angstrom level ultra thin oxide film process, and a triple-layer metal circuitry. The high speed process technology coupled with the feasible 80nm technology also advances the time-to-market availability of the new DDR2 device.

Infineon settles with Rambus, but who
really won?
03/22/2005 03:36 PM
In a move that ends a long-running and convoluted legal saga, Infineon has agreed to settle with Rambus. I think this settlement was actually a loss for Rambus, but it will probably help the company in its other pending suits.

Infineon found guilty

Infineon found guilty 09/15/2004 07:29 PM
RAM maker Infineon have been fined $160 million dollars by the US anti-trust department for illegally fixing prices between 1999 and 2002. Infineon pled guilty, and will be paying the fine off in segments until 2009.

An Infineon rep told The Register that they had changed their ways; they'd only done this to certain OEM customers and they have "already been in contact with these customers and has achieved or is in the process of achieving settlements with all of these OEM customers."

PC makers like Dell has long raised the issue of the major RAM makers illegally maintaining high prices. Other major RAM makers - Samsung, Hynix, Micron - have also been under investigation. Dell CEO Michael Dell has described the group as a ‘Cartel’. As part of Infineon’s settlement with the DOJ, the 3rd largest in the division’s history, the company will aid the government in investigations into the other companies.

The memory market has long been expensive and debatably over-priced. Consumers have been forced into high prices, illegally. One hopes the decision could change this.
