Scam Busters Just As Bad As Scam
Victims?

Scam Busters Just As Bad As Scam
Victims?
01/19/2004 05:05 AM
An odd article out of South Africa complaining that scam busters are just as bad as scam victims - in that they act in just as predictable a manner. Of course, the scam busters aren't the folks losing money to the scammers, and, in fact, they often are doing a good job to spread news of a scam to protect potential victims. So, I'm a bit confused as to what's so upsetting about people taking it upon themselves to tell others about a scam. Certainly, there are some things that don't deserve to be publicized, but are, due to the intensity of the efforts against them. However, scams are something that clearly should be publicized to limit the negative impact. It seems that the real complaint of the writer isn't so much scam busters, but "fad" busters who complain about people getting hooked on the latest fad. However, fads and scams are two very different things.

Scam Within A Scam Warning

Scam Within A Scam Warning 12/22/2003 07:43 PM
There have been a ton of warnings about so-called "phishing" spam scams - where a very realistic email from a well-known financial firm asks you to confirm the details of your account. Of course, the email isn't real and the scammers just want your account details. They go through all sorts of tricks to hide the fact that the email isn't real, but the latest such phishing scam uses a bit of social engineering. It warns people about such scams, and then says they need to fill out new information to avoid being taken by such a scam. It seems the scammers are trying to get increasingly clever, and it's an interesting social engineering trick to try to get people to let down their guard by first warning them about a scam - and then scamming them anyway.

We Are All Security Consumers

We Are All Security Consumers 05/04/2004 12:18 PM
Bruce Schneier says:
This essay of mine argues that the correct way to evaluate security countermeasures is as consumers: is the security you're getting worth what you're giving up to get it.

From the essay: The invasion of Iraq, for example, is presented as an important move for national security. It may be true, but it's only half of the argument. Invading Iraq has cost the United States enormously. The monetary bill is more than $100 billion, and the cost is still rising. The cost in American lives is more than 600, and the number is still rising. The cost in world opinion is considerable. There's a question that needs to be addressed: "Was this the best way to spend all of that? As security consumers, did we get the most security we could have for that $100 billion, those lives, and those other things?"

From the 2004 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, Microsoft today announced its Digital Image Suite 9 and Encarta Reference Library 2004 are now backed by Good Housekeeping's Seal. The Good Housekeeping Seal is one of the most recognized and trusted consumer insignias in the United States and has been granted to high-quality products for nearly 100 years. According to Good Housekeeping, Microsoft is a pioneer in exceeding consumers' expectations for technology products. Today's announcement marks the first time educational and digital imaging consumer software have earned the Good Housekeeping Seal. In 2002, MSN earned the Seal's backing, the first Internet software to receive the recognition.

Turning consumers into producers

Turning consumers into producers 01/16/2004 11:27 AM
The final scan of my RSS feeds, last night, pulled in an item from Doc Searls who said that he was on live radio at The Linux Show. (Doc's item also mentions the RS S Winterfest Webcast a week from today. I'll be there; the complete list of participants is he re.) When I clicked through to The Linux Show's stream, I heard Doc say some things about the recent Macworld and CES shows that really hit home -- so much so that I wanted to hear them again. I reached for the RealPlayer's slider, but it was unresponsive. Doc wasn't kidding, he really was coming live from that radio show. His announcement of that fact made it from his computer to his blog to my aggregator in time for me to catch the live stream. Just another one of the daily miracles that I can't yet bring myself to take for granted. ...

HTTP for syndication consumers 04/09/2004 03:54 PM
It seems to me that there is a real need for a one stop shop for the information necessary to understand the 'how' behind syndicating, archiving and editing episodic web sites.  Specs are good, but they only tend to cover what is not covered by other specifications.  Blogs and mailing lists often provide a much needed missing context for the information, but the discussions found there are often inconclusive and it is virtually impossible to determine if the decisions made have been superseded. Here's a first installment.

Who Spends More On Media: Consumers Or
Advertisers?

Who Spends More On Media: Consumers Or
Advertisers?
08/03/2004 02:18 PM
An investment bank has released a study saying that consum ers now spend more money on media than advertisers do. Traditionally, things like TV are considered advertising-supported media, rather than consumer supported. However, with the rise of things like cable TV, that's been shifting and the study says it's shifted all the way in favor of consumers spending more on media than advertisers do. However, you really have to wonder how they came up with these numbers, because you could make plenty of arguments concerning what really counts as "media." Does an internet connection count? If so, that's a lot of money being spent on media between cable fees and internet connections. Do services (not content) count? Every year there's a ridiculous study trying to count up how much people spend on online content, and it includes online services like dating sites -- which is completely different than paying for "content." So, it's easy to come up with different ways to have the numbers fall into line, but it doesn't necessarily mean that people are willing to open up their wallets and pay for "content" as some will interpret this latest study to suggest.
