AP - Five years ago, a handful of companies with names like Pop, Pseudo and Icebox promised a future when original shows produced for the Internet would replace traditional TV viewing. The dot-com bust deflated those grand ambitions. But the vision of creating unique, interactive multimedia programming for a generation weaned on video games is very much alive at Yahoo Inc.

It was brought to my attention today that Yahoo is copyrighting the RSS feeds for those that are setting up Yahoo 360 accounts. Some are already refusing to use the service because in a sense Yahoo now owns your content.

This may be a oversight on Yahoo's part and I hope it is, I will probaly use their service anyway but probably not the blog portion and give them some time to answer these issues. [Yahoo 360 Copyrights Personal RSS Feeds]

Folllowing up on this post about Yahoo webmail users receiving upgraded storage capacity in an apparent attempt by Yahoo to compete with Gmail, Boing Boing reader Brian says, "As a member of SBC Yahoo dial-up service, I received a notice yesterday that my email account now has a 2 Gig storage capacity. Obviously, this is separate from the free web-based email service from Yahoo, but 2 Gigs is bar far the most storage available to date, worldwide."

DVR Makers Bow to Hollywood

DVR Makers Bow to Hollywood 09/09/2004 10:28 AM
  • Mercury News: TiVo , ReplayTV agree to limits. The makers of TiVo and ReplayTV digital video recorders have agreed to limit how long consumers can keep pay-for-view movies stored on future versions of the VCR-like devices. The new technology also will allow Hollywood movie studios and broadcasters to regulate how often movies purchased through pay-for-view services can be watched. Digital video recorders that recognize these new copy restrictions will begin appearing in the spring of 2005. But it could be years before entertainment companies begin to take advantage of the technology, according to ReplayTV President Bernie Sepaniak.
  • Oh, it's just the pay-per-view movies, they're claiming -- no harm there, right? How soon will this include other kinds of video? Won't HBO and Showtime make similar demands, too? Of course they will. Then will come ABC, CBS and NBC and the other networks. The pay-per-view world approaches more quickly than you think -- if the entertainment cartel gets its way. I'll be pointing out some options to this regime. Stay tuned.

Hollywood Zen: Still life on CBS lot

Hollywood Zen: Still life on CBS lot 07/23/2004 01:31 AM
I was working on the CBS lot in Studio City around sunset today. I had a digital camera with a few minutes and megabytes to kill, so I took some quickie snapshots of abandoned TV sets. Everything you see here is life-sized, but fake (not unlike my city). The trees are painted on drywall, the houses are 3 feet deep, even the ivy is two-dimensional. Vacant studio lots emit a strange kind of sorrow and character that's not there when they're full of humans. Like flat sketches that pop off the page when liberated from their daily human cargo. When the actors and crews go home, the lots wake up and live a moody, poignant, secret little dream life we humans don't know about. My city is full of promises and lies. Here, even the studio sets lie to you about being inanimate. Link

    The Hollywood Ouroboros

The Hollywood Ouroboros 05/18/2004 10:48 PM

Today the wonderfully nasty Hollywood gossip blog Defamer points to the media blog Low Culture, which noted that a recent Entertainment Weekly story looks awfully familiar to one of Low Culture's own pieces, which itself noted that several elements of the new Olson Twins "film" New York Minute look awfully familiar to scenes from the movies Ferris Bueller, Moonstruck, The First Wives Club, and There's Something About Mary.

Is piracy v. hot or what?

(And, yes, I stole the idea for this entry's title from Charlie Kaufman's and Spike Jonze's self-reflexive flick, Adaptation, which itself lifted an Ouroborus reference from the Folklore and Mythology Corporation, also known as -- gasp! -- the public domain.)
