Obituary of anti-flyer fanatic

Obituary of anti-flyer fanatic 09/13/2004 12:19 PM
Mark Frauenfelder: The LA Times has a wonderful obituary for a bit actor named Steve Wayne (Bedtime for Bonzo, Dragnet, Cisco Kid), who died at the age of 84. For the last quarter century of his life, Wayne was monomaniacally focused on tearing down fliers that were posted on walls and buildings.
Over the last two decades, Wayne tore down thousands of illegal fliers tacked on fences, traffic lights and utility poles. His quest was endless, like trying to wipe out gnats one swat at a time...

He began climbing up poles and clawing at the unwanted ads with a garden rake, or going after them while perched on the hood of a moving car with an accomplice at the wheel. But as fast as he tore them down, new ones would replace them...

In 1980 he was so upset by the proliferation of handbills for the Roxy, Troubadour and Whiskey a Go Go nightclubs that he spray-painted "Keep L.A. Clean" on the outsides of the famous establishments. He was arrested on suspicion of malicious vandalism, a charge that could have brought jail time and a steep fine...

He kept at it nearly up to the day he died, stopping to rip down signs "even when coming home from his chemo appointments," his daughter, Cathy Wayne, said in an interview.

Epson's World's Lightest Flyer Still
Smallest, Awesome

Epson's World's Lightest Flyer Still
Smallest, Awesome
08/19/2004 07:35 AM

040818_m.jpg imageSee, I saw that Epson had released a new model of their "World's Lightest Micro-Flying Robot" - you know, the one that was a big deal late last year - and thought, "We've already talked about that. Nobody will be interested." I was wrong, according to the emails, though, so I guess I better mention it. The biggest difference between the old model and the new one is that the update appears to be running untethered, although it still flies with a bit of a wobble. It's too small to be used outside, but I wouldn't be surprised to see some implementation of these available for purchase soon. Although they have serious uses, too - investigating accident scenes, etc. - with the Bluetooth and built-in camera, it would make a perfect office toy, until you were fired for industrial espionage.

Also, could the girl in the video be any less excited?

Racing with my phone 04/09/2004 04:11 PM
On the way home from work this evening, I stopped by Times Square and played a video game on one of the jumbo videotrons: Yahoo! partnered with interactive agency R/GA to produce the car racing game to promote their automotive site. The game play is pretty simple...you call an 800 number (1-800-660-4402), listen for your race, and when the starting flag goes down, you press 2 to speed up and...

Bluetooth car racing 03/21/2003 12:13 AM

bluetoothcarracing.jpgThe photo gallery Mobile Burn put together of all the new Sony Ericsson cellphones introduced at CeBIT last week has a picture of what might just be possibly the silliest use of Bluetooth yet: to race model cars. Sony Ericsson built a race track with little cars that could be controlled remotely using Bluetooth-enabled handsets. Oh yeah, there are some pictures of some other phones in there too, like the amazing-looking A1101s.

Figure Eight Train Racing

Figure Eight Train Racing 03/26/2005 09:53 PM

I stumbled across something on SpeedTV today that has to be seen to be believed: figure-eight train racing. Not real trains — three cars lashed together to act like a train.

The first car is the only powered car. Usually something big, old, and American — mid seventies Monte Carlos seemed quite popular. The driver of this car steers and works the throttle. The car has no brakes.

Attached to the back of the first car by chains and a tow bar is the middle car, which has nothing. No engine, no brakes, no driver. Just an empty shell.

Attached to the back of that by chains is the caboose. No engine, no steering, but it has brakes and a driver. God help him.

Now, take eight of these perversions of automotive theory and put them on a figure eight track. Seriously. Then race them for 10 laps.

The race I watched ended with no hits in the crossover, which surprised me. What's amazing is watching the caboose get whipped around like a rag doll. The rear driver is supposed to be able to put some tension on the train by using the brake, but I couldn't see any difference. Any quick steering movement up front got wildly exaggerated by the time it rippled back to the rear and that guy was just along for the ride.

I wish I had a picture to show you, but a few minutes of Googling turned up nothing. Half of me thinks the whole thing was just a nightmare.

Extreme Gravity Racing Series: Did you like soapbox racing when you were a kid? Wish you could do it again?

Well, you can, although now it has the ominous sounding name of "Extreme Gravity Racing" and some high-powered competitors, like this entry from Porsche. (As much as I like Porsche, the Volvo entry is perhaps the coolest-looking of the bunch.)
