Pope's funeral will be online
04/07/2005 05:48 PMAs crowds flock to the Vatican to pay their respects to Pope John Paul
II in person, millions around the world are tuning in via the
Internet.
The Pope will largely be remembered for his influence on social issues
ranging from euthanasia to AIDS, but he also earned a place in history
for being the first pontiff of the computer era. It seems fitting that
Friday's funeral ceremonies in St. Peter’s Basilica, which are
expected to draw some 2 billion viewers, will also be available
through online venues.
The Vatican launched its multi-lingual website at www.vatican.va in
December 1995. On World Communication Day in 2002, the Pope wrote: "We
should enter this increasingly sophisticated communications network
with realism and confidence. If it is used competently and
responsibly, it could offer an opportunity for spreading the
evangelical word."
He said: "For the Church the new world of cyberspace is a summons to
the great adventure of using its potential to proclaim the gospel
message."
Today, the website is streaming a live transmission of visitors paying
their last respects to the pope. Earlier today, the Pope's last will
and testament was posted.
As of midday yesterday, more than 630,000 people posted messages on
Poland's biggest Internet portal, www.onet.pl, with new messages being
added at the rate of about 20 a minute. Poland is the Pope’s home
country. Dozens of people have posted photographs of themselves posing
with the pope on the website.
Mobile phone text messaging also came into its own under John Paul II,
whose "Thought of the Day" series -- actually brief selections from
his speeches and homilies -- was launched two years ago. The spiritual
messages will continue to be sent until his successor is elected in a
cardinals' conclave, which is set to begin April 18.

An Unconventional Way To Elect
Presidents
An Unconventional Way To Elect
Presidents
08/02/2004 06:34 AMThe current national election system of the United States is flawed.
Designed in the late 18th Century, it was built to fit a different
society. It was designed for a loose federation of 13 states stretched
out along the Atlantic shore. The telegraph would not be invented
until the middle of the 19th century and the automobile would not be
invented until the late 19th century. Transportation was difficult.
Horses carried people over dirt roads. Communication was by messenger.
News could take weeks to travel from one end of the country to the
other. Advances in transportation, communication, and other
technologies have changed society. The United States is no longer an
agricultural population on the Atlantic. It is an economic, military,
and political powerhouse that stretches across the continent to the
Pacific Ocean. It has grown to become the fourth largest country in
area, the third largest in population, and has the largest economy.
It is time for change.
