Photoshop plug-in... not yet for Mac
02/06/2005 12:59 AM
Mok3 has introduced an amazing new Photoshop Plug-in, the Perspective Clone Brush. This plug-in allows users to give the software clues to the perspective plane of an image and clone is such a way that it compensates for that distortion and more closely matches that area you're covering. It also features the ability to clone with simultaneous correction for differences in lighting and scale in the image.

The software runs for US$169.99. There's a special introductory offer that drops the price to US$129.99 and expires 3/31/05...hopefully the Mac version will be out in time for us all to take advantage of that offer because, as it stands, the Mok3 Perspective Clone Brush plug-in is Windows only. Mok3 states on their site that "A version for Mac OS X will be available soon. Please check back for updates on availability." Wait and see.

Macworld review: Adobe Photoshop CS

Macworld review: Adobe Photoshop CS 01/22/2004 02:13 AM
At the core of Adobe's Creative Suite strategy is the unity, integration, and simultaneous release of its major design applications. Photoshop CS (version 8) is a broad and deep upgrade to the company's anchor image editor. Despite its low-key presentation -- its interface is almost the same as version 7's -- it has amazing new tools for Photoshop's traditional users. New features, subtly sprinkled throughout the program, dramatically enhance those users' capabilities and control over their images. Photographers, artists, graphic designers, Web designers, and video specialists will see significant improvements in their images and in the imaging process, but there's no burdensome learning curve.

Roland Piquepaille writes "Computer scientists from the University of Bath have written a software which transforms your ordinary photographs and movies into cubist works of art and animation reminiscent of Picasso. They trained their software to identify important elements of a face, such as a nose, eye or mouth, until the computer learned how to recognize them on its own. This was achieved by giving the software a kind of 'aesthetic sense.' Then, by "using photographs of a subject taken from multiple points of view, the software automatically picks out important areas within the image, which are cut out as chunks. The chunks are statistically shuffled and a few of them randomly selected and distorted into a 'cubist' composition ready for digital painting." The software is not yet publicly available, but software and animation companies have expressed interest. My blog contains additional references and images."
