panasonic_oxyride.jpgPanasonic's new disposable batteries, called 'Oxyride,' look fantastic. PC World tested some and got over twice as battery life over a set of Duracell Ultras, which coincidentally enough cost exactly the same. It sounds like we've got a new favorite battery. (Thanks, Gordon!)

Good morning, internet friends. Another Christmas has come and gone, and yet, I am still without a Nintendo DS. If my attempt to find one in a store yesterday was any indication, they've been a big hit—both games and systems have been impossible to find. Fortunately, my little brother's arms are very pliable, enabling me to bend them behind his back with only the slightest of pressure, popping his DS from his grasp into mine. Small family are the best kind to steal from.

It's good to be back in the bloggy saddle, though, so let those tips flow like the sap of the nog bush. Also, feel free to send in links to your favorite reviews this year from across the internet. I'd like to take a look back at everyone's favorites and compare them with mine.

Also, look! A new AA battery that lasts twice as long but costs only 10 percent more. If Nintendo wouldn't have used rechargables inside the DS, you'd have gotten a nice segue.

Panasonic R3 Review

Panasonic R3 Review 08/03/2004 10:50 AM

panasonic_r3_review1.jpg image

One of the great things working at Gizmodo has allowed me to do is to get my hands on a whole range of gadgetry that I probably wouldn't have been able to play around with otherwise. Since I work from home, each ring of the doorbell means there's probably something new coming, so it's a little like Christmas, except when I return the gifts nobody gets pissy. But despite the joy of opening up all the gadgets and trying them out, most of them -- especially the laptops -- end up being disappointing, and I'm rarely too upset to send them back to the vendor and manufacturer.

Not so with the Panasonic R3, a machine so well put-together that I actually considered buying one for my own personal use, and if it didn't cost twice that of my budget (importers are selling it for around $2800 for a fully-spec'd out unit), I probably would have. What makes the R3 the hands-down best sub-notebook I've ever used? Well, for starters, it actually usable.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-LC50-S Review 06/09/2004 09:10 AM

Panasonic electronics surrounding a Leica lens produces the Panasonic Lumix DMC-LC50-S, an entry-level camera designed to help push Panasonic into a market it has previously left to Sony and the traditional camera companies. TrustedReviews takes the 3.2-megapixel/3x optical zoom camera out for a bit, and finds it decent, but definitely a budget model, with a plastic body, no rechargeable battery, and quite a bit of noise in the pictures. It's not bad, but probably not recommended, with better options from Canon and Sony for around the same price (~$200).

Called BlueSoleil, the software from IVT Corporation makes adding and managing BT devices a simple affair. The device supports up to 7 Bluetooth devices simultaneously and includes three USB ports. The only concern that TrustedReviews had was its flickering blue LED which was something of an annoyance. It sells for roughly $50.

Scientific-Atlanta Explorer 8300 Review
(Verdict: Need More Info)
03/19/2005 02:45 AM

oc_joey.jpgThe AP has a review of the latest Scientific-Atlanta DVR, the Explorer 8300, available in some Time Warner Cable areas. The two-tuner unit's most unique feature is probably its ability to steam content back over the in-house cable network to up to three other set-top boxes. All in all it sounds pretty promising, but as is standard operating procedure for company-provided DVRs, you should probably hang tight until the guys at AVSForum have had a few months to put the 8300 through its paces.

Also mentioned in the article is that Lawrence, Kansas, is one of the test markets of Diego's Moxi set-top boxes (Sunflower Cable?). I had a chance to play with a prototype a few months back and it was pretty fantastic. I'm looking forward to the reviews from those users. (Thanks, Vic!)

Though the reviewer is a fan of the increased ISO speed options and enhancements to some other areas of the camera, he doesn't seem to like the "Zoom" part of the S5500 Zoom. The 10x optical zoom may sound like a fancy number, but he goes on to say that it doesn't exactly take the cake when it comes to focusing quickly.

Great For Kids)
04/01/2005 09:28 AM

firefly_narrow_1_.jpgMobileburn talks about their brief hands-on experience with the Firefly kids cell phone in this piece. We first saw the Firefly last month and noted then that it lacks a standard numeric keypad, instead limiting the user to a "Mom" key, a "Dad" key, and a phonebook which can store up to 20 preset numbers. The phone was "a breeze to use, and certainly was entertaining to look at," according to the guys at Mobileburn and may potentially have some appeal in the senior market. Swappable faceplates and a prepaid system make the idea of handing a cell phone to your preteen a bit more palatable. The Firefly is available now for $200 which includes 1200 nationwide (GSM) minutes for the year.

panasonic-VDR-M70.jpg imagePanasonic's new VDR M70 is another DVD-burner on-board digital camcorder, although in addition to DVD-R it also supports the DVD-RAM format (in 3-inch disc varieties, of course). In addition, the VDR M70 has an anemic 1.2-megapixel still camera, 10x optical zoom, and a 2.5-inch LCD monitor. Altogether sort of pedestrian, really, although it does have image stabilization, which should be standard on almost everything these days, but surprisingly often isn't.

Panasonic has gone to extra lengths to make sure you take advantage of this slot as well; you can play and record audio files from (or to) the inserted card. The units are capable of playing MP3 and WMA files from CDs, and can play those same formats as well as AAC from SD cards. panasonic_dsnap_sv.jpg imagePanasonic has two new cameras out in their D-Snap line, the SV-AS30 [left] and the SV-AS3. Both are thin-profile 3.2-megapixel cameras that can not only record MPEG4 video, but can also play it back from SD cards, as well as MP3s or WMAs (maybe only the SV-AS3 can do the music playback, I'm not positive). In addition, the cameras have a 16:9 image mode for shooting photos that will later be viewed on HDTV screens (1920 x 1080).

The upright form factor is probably my least favorite camera design there is, but they do look nice an pocketable, so there's that.

Nothing impressive feature-wise, (a little VGA camera with LED "photo light" pretty much sums it up), but we're talking about fashion here, so form over function (over a bed of midget-plucked truffles drizzled with a sherry and honey glaze). The camera is situated in a way that facilitates turning the phone sideways to take pics, much like a "real" camera—kind of neat if not a deal sealer. The “SC-HT06” is a 2.1ch audio system with Dolby Virtual Speaker (DVS) technology. This is to fool you into thinking you have a real surround sound setup. The amplifier is provides a total 300W of output, and has three digital inputs: two optical and one coaxial.

“Dual Amp” technology is the focus of the “SA-XR55” amplifier, meaning you can provide twice the amount of power to your speakers. It has features out the wazoo: 7.1ch audio, 192kHz sampling all the way from input to output, and improvement of mid-range tones using “VGDA” (Variable Gain Digital Amplifier). You’ll probably find a crapload of things to like about the SA-XR55, assuming you can afford the 55,000 yen price tag.

They're even more environmentally friendly than other choices.

Building Better Batteries

Building Better Batteries 12/24/2004 12:29 PM
David Pescovitz: My latest article for TheFeature is about new battery designs for mobile devices, from an onboard nuclear trickle charger that harnesses radioactive energy to a microbattery made with the same techniques used to fabricate computer chips.
"In late 18th century, Italian physicist Luigi Galvani shocked the public by demonstrating that an amputated frog's leg twitched when touched with certain metals. Galvani was convinced that energy stored in the frog's leg caused the jerk. He called the accumulated juice "animal electricity." Galvani's friend Alessandro Volta called it nonsense. To prove that the energy came from the metal, not the flesh, Volta eventually made a sandwich of silver, moist cardboard, and zinc. His device also spurred frogs' legs to spasm. In the end, Volta won the intellectual battle and also invented the battery. Two hundred years later, the technology hasn't changed much."

A look at iPod batteries

A look at iPod batteries 03/19/2005 03:27 AM
Since it’s debut in 2001, iPod users have had to contend with the thorny issue of battery replacement. Apple iPods are not unique in the world of rechargeable devices, writes Lance Ulanoff of PC Mag.com. All of the MP3 players on the market use rechargeable batteries, however some are designed for easy battery replacement by the owner. In his comprehensive article, Ulanoff outlines Apple’s battery replacement policy and gives the background in what has been a contentious issue for many iPod owners. “Maybe Apple made a mistake by not making them so consumers could replace their own batteries, but perhaps that's the price you pay for that much-lauded Apple industrial design,” Ulanoff concludes. “So please, enough with the wild conspiracy theories and the threats of class-action lawsuits. The iPod's a good player. Apple's not trying to pull a fast one, and some of you need to learn a little more about rechargeable battery care.”

Sometimes it's the simplest ideas that make a lot of sense. As people in Florida have been stocking up on batteries for their flashlights, it reminds you how you always need to make sure you have the right batteries around for your flashlights. They all seem to take different size batteries, and people always end up with random spare D or C batteries they don't know what to do with. One company is trying to solve that problem by creating a flashlight that will work with AA, C and D cell batteries with the flick of a switch. They claim the flashlight will show just as much light with any of the options, but the weaker batteries won't last as long.
