Apple should be hitting general public
hard with Tiger promos
03/24/2005 08:32 PM
Sometimes it’s hard to understand Apple Computer’s marketing strategy in regards to the lack of promotion for its upcoming products. Take Mac OS X Tiger for example. The latest reports in a number of Apple enthusiast sites claim Tiger will be released to manufacturing before the end of the month. And from what we’ve heard so far, this is supposed to be the best thing Apple has done since the 1984 launch of the Macintosh. Not yet for sale, Tiger sits in the top 10 on Amazon’s top electronics sellers list. Last evening while watching “Survivor” on TV (and without even realizing I was thinking about Apple Computer) I suddenly had the desire to see a teaser commercial for Tiger. Can you imagine how hard any other company in the world would be working on promotions if they had a product half as good as Tiger coming out in a few weeks? Look how Sony built the hype and suspense surrounding its new PlayStation Portable in North America. Apple seems to continually ignore great opportunities for marketing, instead relying on the “free advertising” provided by the Mac media, the odd news story picked up by the mainstream media and the big surprise product launches by the company’s head showman Steve Jobs. While these shows may have been fun for the five percent of the world population that use Macs, the routine is getting a little stale even for them after 20 years. And now thanks to the incredible success of the one product Apple has spent advertising dollars on, the iPod, the mainstream public is primed like never before to hear the hype from Apple about its computers. The two new marketing heavyweights joining Apple recently – Julia Miller, formerly Microsoft’s worldwide marketing and sales executive for Xbox Live, and Allison Johnson, former senior vice president of marketing for HP, will hopefully breathe some fresh air into Apple’s marketing department and bring it into the 21st century.

Are iPod Minis Actually Maxi?

Are iPod Minis Actually Maxi? 01/05/2005 03:55 PM

ipod.jpgSometimes things are bigger than we think they are: space, that taco platter I tried to eat last night... and perhaps we can add iPod minis to that list. Ipoditude and Apple Insider float a rumor that people who are now ordering the 4 gig mini are actually getting 5 gigs, and that the 5 gig announcement will come next week.

Strangely, 1 gig is exactly the amount of bad downloaded mash-up I have in my iPod, so the extra memory would be delightful... if a little odd as a business practice.
