Hologram Generator on a Chip

Hologram Generator on a Chip 06/17/2004 09:49 AM
BoingBoing reader Roland Piquepaille says:
In "Chip Miniaturizes Holography," Technology Review says that Japanese researchers have developed a hologram generator on a single circuit board. The electroholographic system consists of a special-purpose computational chip and a high-resolution, reflective mode, liquid-crystal display panel as a spatial light modulator. With this system, they were able to generate an hologram at a resolution of 800x600 in half a second for an object of 1,000 points. Their solution is scalable in two ways: the computation is done in parallel streams, and several chips can work on a single hologram. The researchers think that there will be real-time 3D applications for television or medical imaging within five to ten years. This overview includes other details and references, including a diagram and a photograph of the hologram generator.

“One way to manipulate tiny particles like single cells is to trap and move them using light, which has enough energy to act like a wind at very small scales. Researchers from the University of Glasgow in Scotland and the University of Oxford in England have devised a way to use hologram patterns to shape the intensity of different portions of a light beam so that several different particles can be simultaneously trapped and individually…

Tiny Projectors: Hologram and Lasers,
Not Smoke and Mirrors
06/30/2004 12:37 PM

hologram_obi.jpg imageResearchers from Cambridge and Light Blue Optics, Ltd. have developed a prototype pocket-sized, battery-powered video projector -- or at least the technology that should, in the mythical two to five years, lead to one. The trick is a total lack of lenses or light bulbs, but instead to display a two-dimensional hologram on a microdisplay then shine a laser through it, which scatters the light into a larger, projected picture. Projectors are great -- I'm about to pick up a cheap one, myself. If they could slip these into cellphones or PDAs, there would be no need for roll-up screens or dorky mirrorshade HUDs at all. All you'd need is a clean wall and a total blotting out of the star we call our sun.

Figure Eight Train Racing

Figure Eight Train Racing 03/26/2005 09:53 PM

I stumbled across something on SpeedTV today that has to be seen to be believed: figure-eight train racing. Not real trains — three cars lashed together to act like a train.

The first car is the only powered car. Usually something big, old, and American — mid seventies Monte Carlos seemed quite popular. The driver of this car steers and works the throttle. The car has no brakes.

Attached to the back of the first car by chains and a tow bar is the middle car, which has nothing. No engine, no brakes, no driver. Just an empty shell.

Attached to the back of that by chains is the caboose. No engine, no steering, but it has brakes and a driver. God help him.

Now, take eight of these perversions of automotive theory and put them on a figure eight track. Seriously. Then race them for 10 laps.

The race I watched ended with no hits in the crossover, which surprised me. What's amazing is watching the caboose get whipped around like a rag doll. The rear driver is supposed to be able to put some tension on the train by using the brake, but I couldn't see any difference. Any quick steering movement up front got wildly exaggerated by the time it rippled back to the rear and that guy was just along for the ride.

I wish I had a picture to show you, but a few minutes of Googling turned up nothing. Half of me thinks the whole thing was just a nightmare.

Help the music industry figure out which

Help the music industry figure out which
way to jump
12/14/2003 09:53 PM
Aaron Swartz has started a blog to record and discuss "alternative compensation schemes" -- business models for music in the era of P2P nets.
Here's the proposal in a nutshell: Some group of people pay a small fee (like a couple dollars a month). In return, they can download whatever they want, however they want. We track what is downloaded and then distribute the money received, in proportion, to the people responsible for the songs. Everybody wins: users get all the music they want, software developers can continue innovating, and the industry gets paid.
