08/01/2004 03:30 AM
According to a recent study by Current Analysis, unit sales of notebooks equipped with a widescreen 15.4-inch display have steadily continued to climb throughout the first half of 2004. As of June 30, the widescreen market accounted for 48% of all notebooks sold, compared to only 15% in December 2003. The growth represents the highest share yet for the widescreen models since its introduction in the spring of 2003 and demonstrates widescreen systems are selling in greater numbers than its traditional square counterparts. How Widescreen Won

How Widescreen Won 05/28/2004 09:35 AM
theodp writes "When Laserdisc makers adopted widescreen in the 80s, letters poured in from customers who thought there was something wrong with their discs. Just a few years ago, Blockbuster discouraged widescreen DVDs on the grounds that customers confused by the letterbox format thought they were defective. But now, even Blockbuster concedes that widescreen is superior to pan-and-scan. What happened? According to Slate, the DVD format, big-screen TVs, and the continuing education of filmgoers all played a part in changing the way we watch movies at home. " Hurray for small victories.

Apex PD-840 8.4 Inch Widescreen DVD
Player
06/15/2004 01:05 PM

PD840_hi.jpg imageApex has added a nice looking 8.4-inch widescreen DVD player to their lineup, called the PD-840. It plays DVDs, music, all that good stuff, with a projected battery life of 2.5 hours -- not long enough for two movies, but probably just long enough for one. Although portable DVD players are the sort of product that has very limited appeal to me -- if I'm not watching them at home, they I'll probably be watching on a laptop -- I know some people, especially people with kids, get a lot of mileage out of them. My own family has chewed through at least two in the last couple of years keeping my young brother entertained.

Should be available late summer for around for (a too pricey) $325.

Updated iBooks

Updated iBooks 12/17/2004 06:34 PM
Apple have updated the range of iBooks. Processing power has increased and Airport cards are now standard across the range. Price reductions also bring down the 12-inch model below the magic $1000 mark (in the US obviously). The revised 14-inch model looks particularly good value — 1.33 GHz G4, 60Gb HD and DVD-R/CD-RW for £1049. Certainly a worthy alternative to the 12-inch PowerBook G4. Far be it from me to circulate rumours, but a revision to the iBook range suggests that the G5 PowerBooks may not be too far away…
