Techie Xmas list

Techie Xmas list

Techie Xmas list 12/02/2003 01:40 AM

Dan Gillmor's put together a list of geeky Xmas prezzies that I quite like:

Inexpensive:

# Free software. OK, almost nothing is truly free. But free open-source software comes pretty close. I'm running the Mozilla Firebird Web browser on my everyday personal computer, for example. It's fast, capable and reliable. Isn't that enough these days?

On the Web, meanwhile, are vast numbers of excellent utilities such as the Google Toolbar, which works only with Windows and recent versions of Internet Explorer.

# USB plug-ins. Once entrepreneurs glommed onto the fact that USB ports on computers offer elecrical power in addition to data connectivity, they came up with a raft of cool stuff.

I use the Zip-LINQ retractable cables from Keyspan to charge my phone and make connections with several other devices. They cost $15 to $25 or so, but mean fewer power bricks to lug around. A colleague at Hong Kong University, where I'm teaching part time this month, also just brought to work a USB cable that connects to a sleeve you slide around your coffee cup. I haven't been able to discover if anyone in the U.S. is selling NewMotion's $6 "Cup Warmer" (but I'm planning to bring several home).

More Techie IPOs

More Techie IPOs 04/20/2004 02:00 PM
Last month we noted that an awful lot of tech companies were getting ready to go public, and since it signaled the (at least momentary) opening of the IPO window, it seemed likely that lots of other tech companies that have been hanging around waiting would try to take advantage of it. So, it's no surprise to hear more and more tech IPO stories. Just as online diamond store Blue Nile goes public, everyone's favorite lawsuit magnet, Michael Robertson is getting set to file the IPO paperwork for Lindows - which is apparently still the company's name, despite their recent product name switch to Linspire.

The Latest Techie Complaints

The Latest Techie Complaints 04/15/2004 01:02 PM
So what does a techie have to complain about these days? It what must have been a fairly cathartic column, one tech columnist just tossed a few of his tech complaints into a single column that doesn't even bother trying to tie them all together. The three big complaints: (1) every time he finds a product he likes, it gets bought by another larger company (and, he implies, the larger company then kills what he liked about the product) (2) it's increasingly difficult to actually find stuff you want on a search engine and (3) plug and play often plugs, but doesn't play. The best part, though, is his description of the inevitable phone call after the new device doesn't work: "Is your computer turned on? Are you connected using a USB or firewire cable? Do you have more than a fifth-grade education?" Something about tax day seems to bring out people's complaining nature.

In an academic setting, a score of 90 percent earns an automatic "A". By that measure, the team shaping Microsoft Office OneNote 2003 merits a similar high passing grade. When the innovative application debuted last October, it reflected the pioneering edge of the digital note-taking category. Today, Microsoft honed that edge by announcing the preview release of Microsoft Office OneNote 2003 Service Pack 1 (OneNote SP1). Ninety percent of the features included in the software update are a direct result of customer input and feedback -- with the remaining 10 percent coming from indirect customer feedback.

Rocking xmas tune

Rocking xmas tune 12/12/2003 10:03 PM

While browsing through hours of free music (with an intent to buy) at Magnatune, I came across the electro sitar stylings of Anup. He's got that whole "sitars over beats" thing down that all the club kids are nuts for these days. But for a seasonal gem, listen to his take on Jingle Bells (mp3).

Listening to the song makes me want to go door-to-door in my neighborhood and perform Bollywood musicals to it.

Scrooge -- The True Meaning of Xmas?

Scrooge -- The True Meaning of Xmas? 12/08/2003 11:42 AM
Scrooge was onto something. "'At this festive season of the year, it is more than usually desirable that we should make some slight provision for the poor and destitute, who suffer greatly at the present time.' Oh? And they don't suffer in January or February? They don't feel hungry in July and August? Why should it not be just as 'desirable' to help out these wretches in those months? Why not go further, in fact? Why not make some 'slight provision' for the poor and destitute every single day of the year?"

Twas a good Xmas, says Microsoft 01/09/2004 09:57 PM
In an interview with Reuters, Microsoft Chief Xbox Officer Robbie Bach let it be known that he is unconcerned with Nintendo's rising GameCube sales, which threaten to push the box into third place in the US. "Christmas was good, we feel like we had a very good holiday," Bach said. "I think it was one of those holidays you would describe as solid." He also noted that for the last few, post-Christmas weeks of December, the Xbox outsold the GameCube.
