Why do we care? It means the demand has outstripped supply. And

I was having some problems with Mail.app and it's handling
of cached IMAP folders. When I would delete all of the messages in a
folder, then when I tried to view new messages it would still display
old messages that I had deleted from the server. The issue seemed to
be that the folders were missing the "special" message that is in all
IMAP folders. I had been using mutt and procmail for quite some time
before I switched to IMAP, hence none of my folders had the special
message that helps keep IMAP clients on the straight and narrow. So
if you are seeing odd caching bugs, try deleting the folder and
re-creating it through the Mail.app interface, especially if they were
just procmail mbox files.

How Many Problems Does Spyware Cause?
How Many Problems Does Spyware Cause?
04/26/2004 11:53 AMWhile most of this article covers standard ground about anti-spyware
legislations and software programs (though, oddly, it does not mention
the two most popular spyware programs: AdAware and Spybot Search &
Destroy), at the very beginning it notes two interesting tidbits on
the impact of spyware. Dell claims that 12% of their
calls now involve questions about spyware (meaning it's good that Dell
has changed their
"don't
talk about spyware" policy) while Microsoft claims that 50% of PC
crashes are actually due to spyware. While this might seem like a
convenient out for Microsoft (whose machines certainly crashed plenty
in the time before spyware), it does indicate just how troublesome
spyware is on many computers. The worst part isn't just the problems
it causes, but the fact that most users have no idea that it's even on
their machines at all.

06/18/2004 11:51 PMThere's another problem with Firefox 0.9. If you have it set as your
default browser and enter a URL in the "Run..." dialog in the

one affects SharpReader as well because it opens URLs in the default
browser using the same mechanism and therefore also reports an error.

Problems with XCode 1.5
08/23/2004 06:54 AM
In the past few days, there have been reports that some fink packages
do not compile correctly using XCode 1.5. If you have not already
upgraded to XCode 1.5, we suggest that you wait until this issue
is resolved before doing so.
If you are having problems with a package which compiled under
XCode 1.2 but does not compile correctly under XCode 1.5,
please report the package to
the fink-devel mailing list. (The usual symptom is: some symbols
are missing after compiling with g++.)
Packages already known to have this problem include
octave, singular-factory, singular-libfac, and possibly sdl.

RSS Scaling Problems: How Can We Help?
07/26/2004 10:58 PMOkay, I'm in Portland for OSCON and catching up on a very big backlog
of stuff. Mark Fletcher, in RSS Scaling Issues, brings up an issue
that I've been worrying about (but not talking about) for quite some
time now. Centralized services like Bloglines avoid this problem
because we only fetch a feed once regardless of how many subscribers
we have to it. Desktop aggregators can't do that, of course, and end
up generating huge amounts of traffic to sites...

Argyriou uncovers what seems to be a serious problem either with
California voting machines or the vote tallying system:
The Secretary of State's summary of votes on the Davis recall
shows three counties--Alameda, Kern, and Plumas--that apparently had
zero voters who didn't vote on the recall. Not one. All
three counties used Diebold machines. Other counties ranged from 0.5%
to 10.3% of voters not voting on the recall.

Solution to gcc problems.
12/19/2004 03:50 PM
Apple has released the November 2004 gcc3 updater, available (upon
free
registration) at connect.apple.com. This updater fixes the problems
with
the gcc3 compiler in XCode 1.5. If you are using XCode 1.5, you
should
install this updater. (The updater will update correctly for users
with
an untouched XCode 1.5, and also for users who installed the
workaround which
the fink project had previously recommended.)
We would like to thank Apple for responding to our reports about this
matter, and working to resolve it as quickly as possible.

More VoIP Problems
More VoIP Problems
08/12/2004 03:18 PMMore evidence that VoIP systems aren't quite as reliable as your
traditional phone service. It turns out that AT&T CallVantage
customers
can't call VoIP users on certain other cable VoIP systems from
companies like Adelphia and Frontier. AT&T insists it's a glitch that
they're fixing, but it certainly brings up questions of
network
neutrality. The fear has been that cable providers would harm
calls on other VoIP systems in order to make their own VoIP look
better -- though, everyone insists that's not the case here. Still,
it seems suspicious that the blocked calls involve competing cable
companies. Meanwhile, Broadband Reports notes that
Vonage is down
again, which seems to be happening a lot lately.

PSP Pixel Problems
PSP Pixel Problems
03/28/2005 04:06 PMAs I mentioned here last week, the PSP debut has brought with it a
relatively large group of complaints about dead pixels on the
screens. They range from a single pixel to whole rows or columns of
dead pixels. Anandtech has posted a response from Sony about
the dead pixels. It’s a generic type response, but worth
reading..
The Sony
rep suggested that PSP owners who encounter the pixel issue should try
the device "for a week or two" to see if it continues to bother them.
"If you find the spots are interfering with gameplay/video viewing
during this period, we will support the various elements of [the PSP]
warranty," the rep said. Each PSP comes with a one-year limited
warranty, which is on page 125 of the PSP manual. If a PSP is
"determined to be defective" by SCEA, the company will see to the
"repair or replacement of this product [the PSP] with a new or
refurbished product at SCEA's option."

Some land problems
Some land problems
04/01/2005 04:49 AMMy post last month about free land, Get yer free land!, has landed
(har har) me in a tricky spot. I now seem to be the fifth Googe
response for free land which is leading to strange emails from people.
Two excerpts:
I would like to request more information about the free land. I'd like
too know how I could get in on it also.
And today's missive, with (I hope) some typos:
would love to move from calif to on of the places that has free land .
But i have quistions like I have two foster bays I need to know what
that county would give to them to live on. The other thing is do they
have places to rent until you build. the other is could you place a
mudular or moble home on the land to live in while you get a job and
you feel me.
I updated the post. I don't know about the free land, I only link to
it. And I don't want to feel anyone.

Workaround for gcc problems.
12/19/2004 03:50 PM
The version of gcc included with XCode 1.5 is known to produce
incorrect output from c++ code under certain circumstances.
Fink now has a mechanism to warn users about this, and Fink will soon
refuse
to use the "broken" gcc to compile packages which are known to
have this problem.
If you have already upgraded XCode to version 1.5, there is a
workaround,
described here
and here .
If you have not yet upgraded, you should consider remaining with
XCode version 1.2 until the problem has been resolved.

Even worse, when lingerers were confronted, they were bellicose. "We

head roaster, added, "It's rarely a pleasant interaction."

Problems with Wikipedia in my DNS
Problems with Wikipedia in my DNS
06/17/2005 05:09 PM
For the last several days, I haven't been able to access the
English Wikipedia from home. This has happened in the past. The reason
is that the DNS that my ISP provides me is returning an error when
looking up en.wikipedia.org.
dig en.wikipedia.org
;; Truncated, retrying in TCP mode.
;; communications error to 210.130.232.1#53: end of file
The odd thing is that jp.wikipedia.org and other
Wikipedia subdomains resolve. Also, when I try another DNS server,
en.wikipedia.org resolves. The DNS server I am using,
DNS.CDN-JAPAN.COM (210.130.232.1) is run by IIJ, my ISP. Has anyone
else had similar problems either with other domains on IIJ or problems
with en.wikipedia.org on other DNS servers?
Sorry, for this obscure and geeky post, but being prevented from
using Wikipedia has become extremely irritating.
UPDATE: en, fr, nl, de, pl fail. ja, eo, ko, es, zh work. It
appears that the ones which are failing use geodns.
UPDATE 2: I caught up with a senior guy from my ISP IIJ at the
Internet Association meeting yesterday and explained the problem to
him. He said that MAYBE it is because they are running a load
balancing thing that might interact weirdly with geodns. He's looking
into it for me.
UPDATE 3: I got a response from my ISP. They said that the
"AUTHORITYSECTION" was being returned making the record longer than
512 bytes forcing it to respond via TCP instead of UDP. They said that
they thought my firewall was blocking TCP responses from dns. They
changed the setting on the nameserver not to add the AUTHORITYSECTION
and now it appears to work for me... I've asked them to provide me
with another long domain entry greater than 512 bytes so I can see if
I can replicate the error...

04/30/2004 12:02 PMBrad of The BradLands reports that Google will give access to your
Gmail account to anyone who can answer your secret question, and since
most people's secret question is something easily discoverable
(mother's maiden name, pet, etc.), this isn't very good news. On the
other hand, as Matt and Brad point out, most other services (Yahoo!
Mail, Hotmail, etc.) have the same problem. So if you do use Gmail, do
pick a more difficult challenge question. On a more uplifting note,
Brad notes that Gmail is starting to work decently with Safari now, if
you click past the your browser is unsupported screen by hitting "sign
in anyway". And Dane Carlson notes the suspicious potential beginnings
of a Google Blog (look at the URL)....
