CDC issues different types of notices for international travelers. As of May 20, 2004, these definitions have been refined to make the announcements more easily understood by travelers, health-care providers, and the general public. The definitions are laid out below. They describe both levels of risk for the traveler and recommended preventive measures to take at each level of risk. The multilingual internet: new studies

The multilingual internet: new studies 12/02/2003 03:08 AM

The new issue of the Journal for Computer-Mediated Communication explores emergent language practices in email, text messaging , newsgroups , and instant messenger ( IM ).

The multilingual Internet raises a number of practical and scholarly questions, ranging from the distinctive features of email or chat in languages with specific font-related requirements, to code-switching in bilingual or multilingual online communication, to the effects of the English language and global "netspeak" (Crystal, 2001) on [computer-mediated communication] in local languages. Linguistic research has shown that spoken languages vary in their structures, meanings and usage—is this equally true on the Internet, where speakers of different languages come into contact and influence one another on a scale never before imagined?

Topics include Arabic and Greek scripts transformed into ASCII text by instant messenger, the spread of English , and gender empowerment in chat .
